Hm... a concept sketch...
I have most of the scene already planned out in my head.
For my environment I want to make a large alley with 5 ceilings, held together by (very) large chains.
In this environment I am going to paint a dogfight between 2 spaceships. Because I don't really like drawing spaceships I will make them 2 flying saucers as some sort of a personal joke ;)
I made some fast scribbles on a couple of post-it's at work while waiting for some prints. These were just to quickly find a rough composition. I nevere ever show these scribbles, but the challenge rules say I have to post a concept sketch. So here they are. Will post a perspective drawing asap.

I used Adobe Illustrator to make a perspective drawing. I will use this as guidelines in Photoshop, and I will use parts as masks in layers with layer masks.

Next step will be to paint a couple of walls that I want to put in the right position with the free transformation tool of Photoshop. It's the first time I construct a scene like this but I suppose it will make work a lot faster and more accurate.

Hi jeroentje! I like your latest perspective, i can already imagine a high speed dog fight. The only thing I can think to ask is, do you think such a battle is 'grand' enough to meet the guidelines? perhaps there is something you can do in the image to give the viewer an idea for the reason for the battle.

Whatever it is, it should capture a pivotal moment that is part of a vast galactic civilisation or conflict.
I was thinking the destruction of the death star was a pivotal moment, so why not this ;)
I just have to make sure the alley will look enormous.

Ahh, now i see where you are comming from :thumbsup: ...although, the death star scenes were perhaps 'grand' only within the context of the film...so, IMHO it might not hurt to add something that will clue the viewer in on the nature of your pivotal event...just my 2 cents ;)

Working in Photoshop now.
I'm using my illustrator shapes as masks, with the perspective sketch on top, the layer set to multiply. All just like planned so far, although I had other colours in mind. The look uuuugly. The orange is nice but it may change.
Still a lot to do, I'm just starting and this is the starting point.

Brought in a second light source and dirted up the chains.

The colors look good... Do you know what for this thing was built???!! :D
The chains maybe look too much like normal chains. It maybe lacks of something that shows the size...

What this was built for? Yep. Here comes the BS:
On a dessert planet (is it dessert or desert? I mean the large hot open place outdoors. Not what you eat after you've eaten already), deep under the surface are large reservoirs of water (reflections will follow). Because the gravity of the planet is pretty low, the chains are constructed to contract the walls towards eachother (and besides, I think chains are pretty cool and gave me the upportunity to draw someyhing rusty. Which makes perfect sense in combination with the water BS story).
So we're looking upwards into the shaft (is that English? I mean like a chimney or something). My flying saucers will be racing down at highspeed.

The size: You're right and I know I have to do something about that. I think I will paint in some doors or some staircases or something. We'll see.

Plus a little test for the position of the flying saucers.

What do you think of my flying saucer? This is the Illustrator sketch. I will use the same technique as I did with the chains, pasting in parts and using them as masks.

wow this is really coming along well! yeah if you have some of teh colors of the tunnel reflected on teh surface of the saucer it will be good. do you thin the blue might be a bit too saturated? maybe try to see what it looks like if you tone it down just a bit.

Damn you are working fast... well, after all, we tend to NOT finish the challenges so we push ourselfs...lol:D

U put yourself on a hard perspective-task and you mastered it perfectly.
The only thing I am missing right now is the feeling of depth but I am looking allready in the future of this image..hehe!(Depth of field blur maybe...?)
Love the saucers. Truely Jeroen style.
One last sugestion: Maybe u should add more irregularities to the shaft, because the chains let one suggest the architectures are very old and monumental(like the pyramides or similar on earth).
Ok,... phew... thats all for now. Hope I pushed your braincells to the limit(if they have one)...hehe:twisted:

Oh yes, reflections of the wall, the back and the water, an interior and someone behind the wheel... it all will follow. This is just the design I've pasted in from illustrator.

These are the designs of the flying saucers. I'm not sure about the colour of the first saucer... yellow or red. I'll paste them into the background and see what works best.
I want the chased saucer to have a bit of a redneck appearance. Painting a rebel flag on it like in the dukes of Hazard TV show crossed my mind, but that's a bit too much I suppose.

cool stuff, maybe play around with a few more color combinations? yellow + white? blue + white? blue and yellow? red and yellow?
anyway, i really admire how much you're able to do in illustrator, i've just played around in it a bit. thanks for showing us all the possiblities! I like the in-game like feel you get from the vector sketches. don't know if you would want that for a final, but just saying.
are you planning to do the final mostly in illustrator or do more work in a raster program?
good work so far! keep it up!

I believe Illustrator is one of the most underappreciated programms.

I took parts of the illustrator drawing and painted over that in Photoshop. I decided to paint the front saucer yellow, but with white stripes. It will make it stand out against the background more then the red version and I can use some light parts in that area of the painting.
Will post an update soon.

The basic painting for the saucers. When I put them on my background painting I will add reflections from the background and the 2 lightsources.
Next job: to paint a couple of aliens.

Lots of stuff to do still. First the pilot of the yellow saucer, next reflections on the wall. And I want those walls dirtier and older looking.

Wow, that's the hottest flying saucer I've ever seen! :applause:
I can't wait to see the finished picture with motion blur and stuff.
I like how you combine irrealistic shapes and cartoon-style stuff with realistic shadows/lights/reflections...

PS. It seems to me that the driver is too big?

I haven't painted the driver yet. Just the guy sitting shotgun (that's a selfportrait btw ;) ).
Maybe I will put him in a bit lower in his seat, but I will do that when I painted in the driver. I don't want to make him disappear behind the dashboard.

wow this is looking great! maybe remember to show where the light of the headlights would cast a slight reflection on the walls of the tunnel, like how you can see a car's headlights shine on the street, but not as bright. maybe in the picture you (the pilot) dont have to be sitting lower, but maybe think about making the dome over the cockpit a little higher.

yeah... the police lights would also show up in the tunnel. and on the chains.

hey jeroentje, good work, are you going to finish it in 1 week :D ? it's very nice, but there is a little thing that bothers me... where does that bright white light at the end of the tunnel come from? I don't know how to explain it, but the end of the tunnel looks... open... well, that's obvious... unfinished, like a hole in your drawing...sorry, I cannot express it better :hmm:

Thanks. But I am not flying this thing, I will paint a pilot in the right seat later, I just haven't figured out who he will be. I am thinking of Kirt (whom you all know) or Leon, a good friend of mine who drives like a maniac.

Lightbeams, reflections, the end of the tunnel, it will all follow later :)

Cool stuff…

The illustrator to Photoshop workflow of yours is very interesting. I’ll have to check that out. First thing that comes to my mind is that the composition looks very horizontal and contradictory to what you said about looking up the shaft, to me it’s like looking to the end of a train tunnel…

Maybe a change in image proportion will make it appear vertical… but then again maybe this is not important, it looks very good as it is.

The little space ship design and workflow seems very groovy to me

Added reflections of the water at the yellow saucer and the reflection of the cop saucers at the walls, lightbeams from the headlights and the reflection of the yellow one at the first chain.
No time to paint the pilot yet.

I think that the police cars' reflections on the walls are a bit distracting, maybe they are too bright or too well defined... and it looks like the yellow car is diving under the water while police's ones are above the water's surface, water reflections and volumetric light on the frontlights might be a bit too heavy, I don't know, I hope I'm not being too annoying with this crits...

I really like where this is going.

You could add some Akira-like lighttrails to the sourcers and make them all go criss cross.
This will add more to the dynamics, sense of speed and tension, 'cos it's going to be a chase right? (het maakt alles een beetje dynamischer, denk ik)

Hey why not give the fleeing ship a set of robotic arms holding a huge bag of $bills...
meh, me and me crazy ideas...

Nothing to crit expect the reflections of the police-saucers. Distracting and I have problems to bring the saucers and reflections together:shrug: !

And the idea to put Kirt behind the wheel(controler)... DO IT!:buttrock:

The yellow saucer :) overlapping with that chain is causing some distraction - i'd move it backwards a bit (or generally towards the center of the image).

Hate to be the one to open a can of worms here jeroentje, but now that you added the reflections on the walls I think you'll have to make the chains reflect too. Because they aren't in the reflection it kind off breaks the illusion. How about really making those siren lights bright?

Sorry I haven't seen your entry until today. I had a good giggle when I first saw the concepts for the ships. :0 Although you started them as a personal joke, I like them! Reminds me of Spaceman Spiff!

Yep, still have to put in some reflections from the chains.

But I have a more important problem with it. I like the ships, the lighting and the composition. But it's kinda boring... I feel there's something missing. I have a couple ideas to spice it up, but when I've put in the pilot I think I will let it sink in for a while. Still over 70 days to finish it anyway ;)

geez Jeroen! I have only made my 2nd concept sketch and you are pratically finished!

Looks great so far all the crits I could come up with Gamoron already mentioned. This shaping up very nicely! The dirtyness you added in your last pic adds alot of character!

Keep up the good work, cant wait to see what you have in mind to spice this up!

Hello Jeroentje! I really like how it looks overall, but was wondering...what if there was a cop saucer a LOT closer to the yellow saucer? It might add a heightened sense of danger. Just a thought. Its looking really good!

Wow. I admire your illustrator skills. It is an underapreciated program...

my .02: I would have to agree with the statements about the police ships' reflections. The walls look very old and not too smooth. A surface like that wouldn't reflect the saucers like that. I really like the concept. Keep it up. Good luck!

I finally had the inspiration to start working on this piece again.
I painted in my buddy Leon. Who usually drives his Fiat Doblo instead of a flying saucer. But also always at topspeed :D

Next step would be to do something about the reflections of the police saucers, and bring in some vague reflections of the chains.

This is it. I don't think I will change anything anymore. A scribble on a yellow post-it memo that turned out as a nice painting. I have learned a lot from making this piece. Specially on my workflow and my texturing.

Hi Jaroentje (or Joe... or Mathilda),
I like the humoristic ambience of your pict, it's original among all these "serious" pictures of the contest.:scream:
However I have a couple of crits :
- The fly is supposed to be scareful for the passenger : I think it could be strengthened by a whirling gas trail, for ex, to show the trajectory is not straight. Why not also have the flying saucer closer : it would be easier to see the passenger expression, and more dynamic...
That's my personnal feeling.

it's better, but still a bit static for me. The kind of beam is not very clear to me : is it laser ? If so, they are a bit soft.

That's a very funny piece for sure, I like the dices :)

But If I remember the instructions for the contest, they told that they didn't want flying saucers.

Maybe you could transform it into a space speeder, like Anakin use in the beginning of StarWars episode3, when he jump off the speeder in coruscant.

Anyway very nice colors, and pov

I just tried to change the opacity of the smoke in the distance. But it looks very messy with the chainsin the back shining through. Besides, I wanted a big thick nasty diesel exhaustion coming from the saucer. So I'm keeping it as it is.

That's actually in the rules? Really?
Ah well, let them disqualify me. I don't care. This is the 6th or 7th cgtalk challenge I entered. The only reason I ever participated was just for the fun of it. And to push myself into making something big and complicated for my portfolio and for learning.
Although I came in second place 2 or 3 times when there were no prizes involved, winning (and certainly winning a prize) was not something I ever cared about.

My static impression probably comes from the fact that the focus is too clean : some motion blur on the background would strengthen the action feeling, and, by the same time, will detach the saucer from the environnement.
Atmosphere would also add some depth : ususally the far part of a landscape is clearer than its foreground.
About the gas trail, the movement is good, but it looks too solid to be gas, because a gas trail is dissipating progressively after the ship is gone.

About the contest rules, I really don't understand why flying saucers are forbidden ! :eek: I should have done something with it for my entry...:D

And a great finish at that. Nice use of color. I wonder if there is a special place they post the finished ones? Otherwise it will difficult to go through every thread to see who's done.
