View Full Version : light linking in maya
gmacarevich 10-30-2004, 05:15 AM hi folks, how are you? So I'm having a problem with what should be a simple task. I'm trying to link lights in Maya. I select my object and light and go under Lighting/Shading and select Make Lights Link but nothing happens. The light is still illuminating all objects. No new text shows up in the script editor after I link the lights so I'd assume for some reason Maya isn't performing the task. Any ideas, am I doing something wrong? I don't know much about lighting so any help would be welcome. Thanks all...

I"m not sure why you're not getting the linking effect you want using Make/Break Light Linking. Try going to the rendering menu set >Lighting/Shading >Light Linking > Light-Centric or bring up the Relationship Editor and select Light Centric Light Linking. In the left column are listed all the lights in your scene, select the light you want to work with. In the right column are listed all the objects in your scene. Highlighted objects are ones that this light is affecting. Deselect any objects you don't want the light to affect. It may be necessary to go through the hierarchy for a particular object if it has many parts and select/deselect each part. Sometimes Maya doesn't "see" grouped or parented objects as one object when you select the Parent or group node.
Hope this was helpful.
