Latest Update: Final Image: the quest for the beginning
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4941/4941_1103067828_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4941/4941_1103067828_large.jpg)
Hello everybody. I think it is done. When you feel the work is finished so it is, and all the added things over this point could start to damage it. So, this is my final image. Off course, I've made some changes since the last post following your comments and my insomnia ;)
I darkened the entire composition enphasizing the central part, with the earth hologram as the light source. I added some light flares on it that gives it some moving sensation. Following this, I put some shadows, projected by the warrior, over the woman in the left corner. The space ship and the sky above was darkened too, putting it far form our main attention. I think it was not necessary to blur it. The space clouds were retouched with different zones of light and shadows too. I've been "hearing" you and everybody has good observations in their critics but there is only one way for this work. The rest remains as learnings for the future. This was my first WIP challenge and I'd never thought it was gonna be so stimulant. Thank you all! I'll be around anyway seeing and commenting. See you!!!!

I start whit this idea:
500.000 years have past since the human kind spread thru the Universe. Four main human sub-species had been developed in this time with dozens of divisions, changing the aspect of early humans thru time, culture and technology. The past dark ages took humanity close to its end and most of their legacy was lost. The path to Earth had been forgotten and they have reunited again as it never had happened in a very long time. Their interests were diverse and opposite but one thing kept them together: find Earth again and try to understand their beginnings.

Thanks! Well, this not a new idea. It has been one of the comon incentives in space opera since "Galactica", but I will try to give it some interesting point of view. I have a question and I dont konw where to find an answer: When I get registered in this Challenge I made a mistake and in the field country appers another country but not mine. How can I change it? I´m afraid that, following the rules, it uncualified my in the contest. If u or someone else knows how to correct this I´ll be glad. I am new around and Im not very familiarized with the interface. Thanks again! I´ll visit your posts!

I made some changes in the composition over the first sketch. Since this is SPACE opera, Im trying the space take more protagonism. So I increase the size of it above.

I think you had enough space in the first sketch, I liked it better. My only other suggestion is to rotate the four figures so that the bottom one doesnt end up with the earth over its head.
I really like your concept and I can tell just from the sketch this is gooing to be a strong piece.
Good Luck,

Don't forget to throw the moon in there, or even some asteroid debris around it so the Earth looks changed somewhat. I can see how you have it angled that it is recognizable as Earth to us. Nice work. Up above these guys are you going to have throngs of people like in a colluseum?

Thanks for the coments!
I´ll take care of the people behind the earth. It is true they look weird without head! The sphere in the space is not the moon (I know, it looks like that in the sketch) but some kind of space ship, the one that will take our travelers in their quest for earth. Since the travel will be veeeeery long I was thinking in something big as a techno-asteroid or something like that. There are four main characters, representing the four human sub-species but the room will be full of different humans. I´ll think about the coliseum idea, it is good.
Thanks again! Good luck!

Looks like a really good idea :) Can't wait to se some more.
Are all the four "new human" types going to be in the image? looks interesting.
Looks like you are doing a leonardo human thing in the middle.
Only you should try to get some more depth visually into the image, try to use the three spatial planes more (near, middle, far)

Hello
Thanks for everything. I wrote to a moderator. Lets see.
I´ll take care of the planes of depth. I am working o it. About the four kind of humans, they will be in the composition (close to us) but I will add a lot of more different people, because this 4 main groups have their divisions and races. There will be some floating platforms in the background with other humans. It could help the idea of depth.
Im Going to sleep now. Thanks again!

I am back. This is the final sketch, I think. I decided to eliminate most of the walls leaving a greater view of the space behind. I placed some floating platforms crowded of people at both sides of the composition to give more sense of depth in the room. Work a little more the spaceship in the sky. Looks like a hollow techno sphere. I am working the line art of the characters. Will be there soon again.

Hi everybody. Line art finally. I worked every character separately following the main sketch. I am planning to leave some of the line in the final image, but in this case I will work the line a little more. Lets see how it works.

Oh, this is looking really good. It has a very Mobeius feel, I like your work. I feel the DaVinci style symbol in the back might get in your compositional way. Hopefully in the color render you'll be able to maintain low contrast and keep it in the back.
Greatly look forward to more!

Hi every body, thanks for the help and comments!
Coloring the image: First, I use to apply flat areas of color. That’s why I am keeping the line-art. I know it looks too sharp compared with the kind of textured brush I am using in the colored areas but I will work over it in the future. I am planning to use some textures, as you can see in the curved surface at the bottom. I use to create it combining different textures and distorting the result in the final composition, trying to achieve a kind of texture that fix well with the brush texture. The “Leonardo” disc, do not appear right now. I’m working on it separately.

Back to line-art process: I create a simple 3D composition for the ship for a better achieve of its complex shape. I work the line art over it correcting some curves, etc. Here it goes.
V-Shane, yes, Moebius has been always an inspiration for me, as Juan Gimenez, Enki Bilal and other european comic artists. I am a comic artist too and drink every day from their source. For this challenge I had other sources of inspiration, most of them in literature: Vernor Vinge´s "A fire upon the deep" and Dan Simons "Hyperion" are of my favorites space opera novels.

Wow! I like this a lot!, as someone has commented above is very Moebius-like. Keep certain flatness in the colors, the figure at the right is perfect as is, in my opinion; and those pale green figures are great, i like the colour scheme you are using, and the clear lines.
The perspective gives a great sense of space, that place is BIG
Keep up the good work!!

Here goes some progress with my illustration. I have worked some of the characters in the composition. Add some textures to the background wall and to the earth sphere and work the space station, above. There is nothing yet about the "Leonardo´s like" panel over the wall but I´ve been working on it separately, without perspective, to have a better control of the shape and textures.

Hi kanotson, thanks for the coments! About the line I am going to keep it but will work over it with the same brush I am using for the color. That way it will integrate a little with the rest. As you can see some of the line vanished in deep. About the flat colors I´ve been thinking about. For other illustration of mine I use to remain the flat areas like a comic illustration but since this is a challenge I prefer to go further and explore more on textures, shapes and color combination. See you around!

Hi everybody. This is a close up of the ship. As you can see I put more line detail on it. It looks too flat before. At the right is the current state of it. I know, I concentrate too much in the ship forgetting the rest. Im on it.

Great skills. Your line artwork reminds me Moebius clean style of line, and the composition is very good and has a lot of painting possibilities. And about your ship... Is it 3D based?
kaparo
11-24-2004, 03:44 PM
Hi Luis. Thanks for ther coments. About the ship, I made a single 3D scheme that you can see some posts before. I work over it to do the line art in a vector graphic program to achieve perfect curves and circles. Some steps before, I add it more detail with more lines and curves. I am not good enough in 3D graphics, really.

More progress here. I ve been working in the three floating platforms and the people over it. I put the finished "Leonardo" scheme over the wall. It looks very photographic and less technological before.

Thanks everybody! I will put some cosmic elements so the blank space will not look to flat but I will leave it to the end. I was thinking to add some little spaceships around the big one but I´m not sure right now. There is still lot of work to do with the three main characters in the foreground. Great work kaparo. Instead of telling you how good your work already is, I would like to suggest some things that could perhaps improve your work.
Looking at your initial sketches, I think the characters around the sphere were more cohesive. Probably it is because it was still a sketch and there wasn't much detail, but I think there are a couple of things you could do to improve this. The woman in red is too far off the picture, and the arm of the guy in front covers half her face. If you could move the guy in front a bit to the right and make her dress less red, and more brown/green I think she would get back in the picture. Another thing, is the guy with the leather suit is too detailed compared to the others and he has the darkest color. Perhaps you could even this out, detailing the guys on the right. It seems there is too much detail going on in your lower left part of the image. There is also a guy in the back that is perfectly aligned with the center of the image calling too much attention. Try filling the gaps to his sides with other aliens, or else, move him a bit to the side.
The floating sphere in the middle needs some visual cues as to where it is in space (above the bigger sphere below, I suppose). You could make some kind of visual connection with the sphere below, like rays, dust, glow or a soft shadow.
There is also that circular image in the back...it looks too bidimensional in my opinion but perhaps that is so, because you still haven't worked on it). It needs some kind of smooth shading to make it look more spherical.
On last thing is the dome above and its openings. There was a previous sketch where you had just one opening above. I think this image was stronger and more symbolic. The spaceships to the side could still exist, since there is no reason why they couldn't be there. The openings could be off-frame or the dome could be so gigantic that they came in from the top opening. The opening could also use some kind of rim structure. It looks a bit fragile as it is.
Well, I hope I was of some help. Keep it going!
kaparo
12-04-2004, 08:50 PM
Hello you all! Thanks for the coments! I will keep it in mind to correct some things. I will adjust the color of the woman in red to make her less brighter and will adjust the position of the dark warrior a little to the right. About his amount of texture and dark colors I think it will be balanced with the main character in the foreground. Her long dark dress and neck will be full of detail and intensity. Also I will adjust the rest of the aliens in the compositions. About the "Leonardo" like scheme at the center it was suposed to be an inmense flat circle , not a sphere) but it looks a little strange. Lets see how I´ll fix it.
Thanks again! Back to work right now!

Hello everybody
Attending to the coments made before, I decided to enhance the sense of perspective in the background wall and contrast it with the circle "Leonardo" diagram over it. So I was back to vector graphics: I made a grid using single lines that helped me to place every stone slab over it, once in photoshop to create a stone like wall that catch this rounding shape. I know it could be easier in 3D but this a 2D challenge, so I take it. I spent must of my sunday doing this. Here goes a graphic explanation an soon the real image.

Hi everybody! Well, here goes some changes: I relocated the black woman in the right side. Now we can see her face better. Also I desaturated her a little so she goes back in the composition. The little people in the center background where changed too, and some new added. The wall is completed and I like more like it is right now. The tiled surface helped to catch the rounded shape of the room. The "Leonardo" scheme looks lighter but I will adjust the light of the entire image at the end. Perhaps i'll add some tiled surface to it too, I dont know right now. I started working the main character. She has an aztec deco dress but it is not finished. She will gonna have lot a detail there. I hoppe you like the changes. Coments... please...

This on is beautiful. The style reminds me of Mobius, but also of the WAKE series from France. The compostion is very powerful, sweeping up through the image to the ship in the upper right. It really serves the narrative, and propels the characters along.
My only bit of suggestion is that the holo image be a soft blue that might light the specularity of the characters and the lower half of the composition with a tiny spark of color.
Great Work!

Well I'm working on the her drees. It is very decorative so I went again to vector graphics, made a design in Corel Draw an exported it by pices to photoshop. There I adjust it's shapes to fix the figure. Since it have a very "clean" outline I redraw it all using this "crayon" brush. Some other decorative details, like the ones in the arm, where added directly in photoshop. Soon I'll post a complete image of her entire body.

This is looking gorgeous, Kaparo! I love what you did with the tiles on the back wall, and enjoyed seeing how you did it with the vector graphics. I like the details on the woman's dress, but have one small suggestion: I've always loved in all of your previous comps how her dress didn't have sleeves and just faded off into her arm's skin. But now, some of the decorations you have cut across the arm in just that one spot, and kind of reads like short sleeves. I don't like the look, as it makes her feel like she's wearing a t-shirt dress, which isn't as alien as before, and I would love to see more of that "fading out" from the earlier comps captured. But that's all, 'side from that it's all just lovely. Great work!

As some other posters pointed, it has a design close to Moebius style. You made a very intelligent use of the spheres in perspective matter. This composition is interesting and well managed. Choice of colours copes admirably with the rest of the piece and the mood.
I especially like the pre-colombian patterns on the foreground character's back. Original idea.
All in all, awesome work here ! Keep up

I love this image, one of my favorites in the 2D challenge category for sure.
:)
The characters are great, the concept is wonderfully executed and the colour choices and details work really well. The one thing that stands out to me is how "2D' the wall structure is... will you be adding highlights to what I assume is glass and will the thickness of the walls be defined a little better?
Nitpicking at it's best... beautiful work!

Hello everybody. Happy at last because here goes my final coloring. I add the nebula and stars in the sky. Created a tiled texture for the Leonardo scheme, that helped it look as flat as I wanted, also increased the depth of it at it's bottom. I add a glow around the earth sphere as Andreas sugested. I think I finished the aztec deco girl in foreground. For the final image I will check it's decorations again and adjust a little the general lights to add more intensity.Coments and critics are welcome please! See you around!

Kaparo...
Looking great... is that the final space image / representation you're going to use? It seems a little flat.... is it a photograph? Just doesn't feel like it is working as well as it could. The rest of your illustration is so strong and clean, they seem to be playing against each other a bit.
I love the colours and the ship designs your concept has and the fact that all of the characters have a personality. I still find the architecture of the room itself to be a little ill-defined but the composition really helps to ground it.
It's been a lot of fun to watch this piece develop, you've created a very memorable work!

Maybe you must have to blur a bit the spherical ship, cause there are too much focal points with all too detailed

Thanks Luis and CGkrusty for the comments. The space background is not a photograph, was made entirely in photoshop. Perhaps I have to make some darker areas on it to give it more deep. The same with the ship. I'm not much sure about blur it because this way it will loose it's "crayon" texture. Anyway I have to figure it out how to achieve it's deep (coloring it it again?). The architecture almost not exist actually in the composition. It is just a fragment of a rounded wall. I was thinking in the beginning to do something more "solid" but I prefer to center the interest in the characters and let the wall like it is. Well, thanks againd buddies! Good luck!

I really enjoyed watching how you evolved the characters, I think their detailing is excellent right now. Same with the overall concept  As for your concern with lighting, I'm not very experienced with brushes in photoshop, but I think one thing that would help is to have a single definite light source. With those large windows it would seem there isn't much room for internal lighting fixtures aside from the hologram of earth, so maybe you could have the sun placed somehow we can't see but use the lighting and shadows on the structure and also on the spaceship in the background to reflect that. The reflected sunlight off the structure could provide all the light the council needs to see and that would give you the chance to work with some really cool shading and lighting effects.
I agree with the above comment that the nebula does look a bit flat, and I think that's mostly do a lack of extreme ranges in light. In that dull patch right below the spherical ship try adding some bright stars and then fading some really dim ones out so they aren't so uniform. With the nebula you could create one area that is really bright and then have the light fade to pitch black in some areas, to give the cloud a sense of an internal glow aided by the stars around it. I'd probably hold off on the sky until you finalized your other objects though so you don't end up doing a lot of work for nothing and can better tailor the background to the scene.
Like I said, I'm not very experienced with photoshop so I don't know if my suggestions are too demanding or impossible, but just keep up with that detailing and you'll do fine! :) I do like what I see so far.

1.- Your idea is very original (i like all the characters)
2.- I think that the spherical ship don't need blur, it looks great.
3.- Maybe you can do something more detailed with the architecture.

his is just great you have your own vision which is very cool.
Showing all those race is a great idea.
I think your sky need more depth, with hydrogen clouds. I think you can also add more metallic reflect to the space base, and some glass reflects to the windows

as othes have siad the station needs blur and the bacgorund is very good but i do not think it suits the rest of the pic.. it is too real if you know what i mean, while the rest of pic is quite comic type style. maybe stylise it a bit more to suit the rest of your style... other than that the rest is very good.

See you!!!!

Hola Ganne!
Bueno, no soy colombiano. Yo he recibido mucha. ¡Saludos compay!!!

The adjustments work well I think. The emphasis on the lighting around the characters to show the hologram as the main light source really helps to draw your attention to it. Great job with the characters overall, they have a lot of personality. Good luck to you in January!

just wanted to say this:   :bounce: :scream: :applause:
I still think there are some details you could work a little bit, if you had the time... the good thing about digital art is that you can always go the a previously saved version, but ....well, if you are finished, you are. By the way... now that you are finished, do you (or anybody) know the difference between the Final coloring milestone and the final image?... I don't know what that milestone is supposed to be....
great work, I hope to see some day more work of yours, good luck!

Hello everybody. I was a little absent in this days. End of the year work. It happen all the time. Some companys here let everything to the end and when the chaos come is the illustrator dutty to solve it in the less time possible.
What can we do, if we do what we like...
El mas feo: For me FINAL COLORING is when you have colored everything in your image with the right adjust of volumes and lights. I saw it as a "correct" image but still need some final touch. There is when you adjust some general things on the entire composition to have a FINAL IMAGE. In my case, the atmosphere light, the flares effects in the holograms, etc. Well, it is just my approach to it. Everybody has their own methods. Do not take to much touble with this. Follow your steps as you fell more comfortable.
MDN67: Caza! I almost forgot him! Yes, he was an influence for me in the university. Now I don't know what he is doing. Have to search in the web! Thanks to remeber me!
Happy holidays!

This is probably going to win! I sat here for several minutes with my mouth hanging open just staring at it! It is beautiful just as it is.
If you do decide to work on it more, the only think that might need tweaking is the large disk with the etched figures in the background. Just to give it more depth in the "engraved" look of the figures.
Simply STUNNING work! :bounce: :buttrock: :applause:

Hello and thanks once again to all of you! I was thinking about the background wall image, as we allways do everytime we finished a work. I never wanted it to have to much attention thats the way I keep it simple, almost minimalistic. Anyway, even if I wanted to, right now I have lots of work to do for this end of the year!
Happy Holidays!!! See you around!

Hello again everybody!
Well, now that the vote phase start I could look to the final pieces and I was very impressed for the quality of the most of them. Yes, Maxter, it is a shame we do not see too many latin works here. I live in Colombia since 1999 (I am cuban) and I think the illustration potential here is really big, but here most of the work choices are in child publications field so most of the illustration work on it. I have done it too. In other hand, sci-fi has nothing to much to do with colombian culture, I think. People just follow "Star Wars" or "Matrix" for the big screen success, but sci-fi literature is almost unknown here.
Moebius has been always one of my masters since I started studying graphic design in Cuba. There I became a comic artist and people always find the influence in my work... even now that I am not doing the ink stripped lines anymore. :-)
See you around!
