Hi! I'm a user of 3D Studio Max 5.0.

I saw this picture and I'm testing my abilities to make these fine pictures some of you in this forum have made:

http://www.trinisica.com/img/gallery/imageviewer.asp?image=brazil/b04x_grapes_01.jpg&w=1000&h=590

I have two questions about this picture which I've tried and tried and again tried to accomplish:

1) The texture on the small beveled "balls" - how in earth can you make that look "organic"? It only looks plastic to me.

2) The rain - it doesn't look right when I tries to do the same. It's in the speed amount in the particle settings, but it still doesn't look realistic. When the rain bounces off from the ball (with a SDeflector), it simply looks like tubes are bouncing off, spikey and all stretched out - in the picture (link above), the rain is smoothly bending after the bounce.

This is my first post thread so I hope you guys will treat me well :)

Also remember, I'm only a simple newbie on this subject :D A newbie 3D Studio Max'er - I believe that's not anything new for you guys.

Anyway, thank you for your time!

Hey...

1) To make ur ball look organic like that u have to use something called Sub Surface Scattering (SSS, or 3S), where the objects surface is translucent and the light scatters inside of it
the brazil and fR renderers have that option.. in that pic the guy used brazils 3S, but u could fake it with 3dsmax5's translucency shader...

2) Did u give the particles gravity properties? If theres no gravity they're just gonna bounce and go to the other direction moving linear...
theres a gravity space warp in max.. go look for it ;)

and dont start by copying other peoples ideas and images.. create ur own ideas ;) , even if u wanna just learn

Hello and thanks for your reply!

I've checked the translucency shader but it still havn't made a difference to my "ball".

I've also added a gravity force and that worked very well! Now the particles are "bending" excellent! Thanks for that tip :)

I'm not "copying" other ideas, I'm just trying to learn. I'm not going to publish this picture and telling "I've done this and that by myself"; I'm just going to clone the idea itself and try to learn how things works. That's just about it ;)

About the translucency shader - how in earth do I add this correctly? Look at the image below and see for yourself - nothing spectacular about that material. :hmm:

Also look at the rain - with motionblur it looks terrible and as the picture in the link I gave you, it doesn't look like there's any motion blur attached to it. How do I accomplish this? How do I add falling rain without motion blur like that?

Hope I'll get some answers.
Thanks anyway :)

that image you are refering to was created by a highly skilled artist. asking what single thing you could do to achive such results is impossible. it takes years of learning about lighting, modeling, texturing. then more time with partical systems. After that, spend time learning Brazil.

I sugest you find a more simple image to learn with
