I recently got myself a shiny new computer.
Its so much faster its unbelievable.

Except: The material editor in max 4.2 (and 5 too actually)
is extremely slow. Every time i load a material it takes maybe a second or two before it loads. It never did that on my old computer which was ten times slower.

I was thinking maybe i had made some mistakes with the system paths, but i dont think so now. And its just the materials nothing else, so it cant be the hd.

can anyone PLEASE help me, its getting very annoying. and frustrating to work.

E.T :annoyed:

having a large amount of map paths can slow it down, especially if some are no longer valid....also check to see if the materials are being anitaliased or have very large maps in them...hope this helps

You don't use finalRender do you? I noticed a huge amount of lag in my material editor after I installed fR.

No i i dont use FR.
And also its been like this out of the box. That is before i installed any of the plugins.

I even borrowed a friends max5 and installed from scratch just to see if it was any different. Did no difference what so ever.

having a large amount of map paths can slow it down

I havent got that many map paths...
Max5 installed many paths if i remember it correctly (had to give it back) could i use just one root map-path?
maybe that would clear it up.

Thanks anyway,
E.T

A shot in the dark - are you running a GeForce card with nVidia's nView software installed? It is known to cause slowdowns in applications incl. Max.

Well yes and no. Im running a quadro pro4.(basically same chip)
So youre saying its nview who is the guilty one?

interesting. Ill try switching it off. (if thats possible)

thanks

not a solution, just a confirmation:

I am running a GeForce 3 with the newest drivers, and am having the same problems! it sucks! I hate it! well the card rules.. it's wicked fast but the material editor takes forever to populate the list of artributes. even launching the editor takes twice as long.

I'm running with a Geforce 3 and I don't have a single problem. That's odd - tried to install the older version of the drivers? Maby that could help?

First i have to disable nview though or at least try to :)

When I tested maxtreme, it didn't support more than one max session....this make them unsueable.
Is there new version with support for at least two session of max running ?

errm maybe this is a stupid question, or maybe my english is worse than i thought, but why would you like to run more than one max session at once?

E.T

edit:
damn! i just realized i cant disable nview, i thought i could still use my twomonitor setup but that doesnt work it seems.

guess ill have to wait for an update then...

I've really often two max session running. For example, one with my big scene, another for retouche/map/model indepedant object then merge it in other session big scene. Or one session rendering while I work on another one. Of course we have only dual-processors machines.

MAX renders daul thred...so uness you set your affinity...
I could never make that work very well

with two sessions do you edit your xform parents in one session? how does that work? I know nothing about xform except that an object can be refrenced between files... I am interested for I'm working with extreamly complex models, up to 6 in a single scene and trying to animate them fluidly. currntly I am using dummys and binding the complex models to them, then hidding them to animate... would xform be a better solution? what are the draw backs and benefits?

lil off topic, but
Thanks!

cdinic, you may talk about XRefs, no ?
It works really fine and help for big scenes, with many guys working on different part. Just pay attention to scales and position of xrefs/proxies, and all is good ,-)

Well.... here is some of the strange slowdowns I've seen:

1. If you click at ex. Diffuse map, it pops up the "Material/Map Browser" it can slow down if you have installed Discreet combustion. (Cause it looks for the discreet combustion "bridge")
2. Right click speed slowdown in viewport, cause Mcafee antivirus is running.
3. If you have installed extra shaders/producuals... mostly thouse from digimations site.

I've also had that file problem for some years ago... but I can't remember how to fix it... try close all apps (also antivirus/firewall etc.), so only 3dsmax is left. Then you can chech if it is 3dsmax that is bugging or it is some 3. part progs.

Just to throw in a comment from the "no problems here" side of the fence. I'm running a dual AMD with a GeForce 4 4600 here, using two monitors under Win2k, using the latest drivers (41.40 I belive). MAX is in OGL mode.

I have noticed no slowdowns in the material editor. Or slowdowns anywhere else for that matter.

..I realise I'm not directly helping with this, but.. just wanted to mention that apparently it's not a world-wide problem..

Gaggle: That IS actually helpful.
I had given up pursuing a solution to this waiting for the next nview driver.

And Devil i will try and see if it shows any differences.

thanx to you all
