Well, my pen sketches weren't displaying for some reason, so here's a color sketchhttp://img118.exs.cx/img118/5356/spaceopera.jpg

Wellcome, really dig the colors here. Even though I can`t make out what`s
happening. It looks like some craft is bombarding something, but the building
in the corner is quite confusing - take care of the perspective if that`s the case.
And be sure to submit all your pics through the Submition Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/submit_entry.php)

Thanks, Ganthu! Hehe, I've done most of the spaceship development in my other sketches, thus the ship in the bottom corner still looks like a building. I'll be sure to clear that up. And thanks for pointing out my posting error, I'm really new at this.

complimentary colors are very effectiv in your color sketch. Very nice!

Hey, Octothreat, beautiful colors you're using so far. Can't wait to see how they all develop. I know it's in a really rough state, so this may be moot, but watch out for the tangent between the alien ship's nose and the top border of the image. Pulling the ship down a bit or extending the pic upwards will easily fix that, but just thought i'd point it out. Best of luck with it!

The colours look great. I think it would look spectacular if you kept the slightly watercoloured look you have going.

Just thought I\'d display my incredible cut and paste skills to give you a slightly better idea of what I was thinking of.
Thanks for the advice Mike, I\'ll be sure to keep that in mind. And I\'m glad you like the colors!

Hi Octothreat, nice job so far:), it would be great if you pay more attention to the detail for the ship and clouds. I know its still a very early stage, and I believe you can do better later, Good luck.;)

OK here is a more detailed background image. The gray/orange thinner clouds will be pushed futher forward later.

the dark outlines and curves within or around the clouds really make them look cartoonish
nice idea though, i think you should use a lot more contrast though
i don't like the colors. they're too soft...not saying they don't work...but for a *big booming voice* GRAND SPACE OPERA hehe it won't have the impact that a lot of other works do. i did like a 5 second PS color adjustment...an example of how dramatic the colors should be IMO...not these colors prolly tho haha...but like the fire or whatever thing that is trailing the ships should be just like it'd be in real life...like looking into the sun
i always find a good way to find two colors is find one great color, and then go directly across the color wheel to get the other color (i forget if this is possible in PS, prolly...but in Painter it's easy with the color mixer)...sounds obvious to just find complements and doesn't always work, but it's good for when you're out of color ideas
i also agree with the spaceship coming outta the corner...take it out or show more...and be careful which way you face it, because the direction it's going it's leading the eye off the page
damn i forgot this forum has no attachments...hold on...x.x;;;
ok. the pic might go down, but oh well, it's not important

Hey, thanks for the color advice! Your modification definately has more impact. And I'll be more careful with that ship's orientation.

Ive softened some of the marks on the left cloud, but am contemplating how far I shall soften the image...
Ive also smoothened/carved out the human ship a little more, and changed the alien lasers, which before looked scribbly.

\"And the last ship began its attack...\"
So for some reason I wasn\'t able to upload my final image, so I\'m just posting it as a wip for the community. If anyone knows why the zipped tiff file won\'t upload, I still have a little time left. In any case, thanks for everyone\'s input, its been a great challenge.

hey, don't give up just because you can't upload your file! ask a mod or something, ...I can't help you, I haven.t uploaded mine yet:shrug: ... it would be sad to give up for that kind of technical problems... I hope you can solve it somehow

edit: Well, posting just closed, and I didn't get it to work. But it feels better knowing I tried until the end... :) Thanks everybody.

awww, well, it was a good effort anyhow...it happens to the best of us. much better improvement from the last time i checked the thread. have you painter? there are glow features and fire features in there in the fx brushes...it would make your life much easier with the ship trails etc  good job with the colors!

Hey good news! Thanks to the extended deadline and lost of help from Mibus (thanks again man!) I was able to both submit the final image and upload the ftp version (even though I'm not sure how it worked), so I'm all set. Hooray!
hpslashluvr: I'm glad you like the colors. Hehehe, it was done mostly with painter, but I didnt think to use the FX brush. Silly me. Ill remember that next time.
