View Full Version : Mental Ray / Maya 6.0.1 / Final Gather / Jagged & Inconsistent Edge Problem

I don't know if the gap is to thin for the rendering engine to create a discernable effect but this just isn't going anywhere for me  . I've played around with AA sample settings (min:1 / max: 3), increased FG rays (3000), tried several multi-pixel filtering methods and etc. Nothing is fixing the problem. Can anyone shine some light into this matter? Also, I've always left FG radius settings at the default 0. I'm under the impression that Mental Ray computes that automatically if set to 0. Anyway, please help! Thank you guys/gals in advance.

Hmm...that does seem abit of an issue, first thing i was gonna say as soon as a saw it was your antialiasing settings, but that all seems to be in order. Its not really a long term solution, but have you tried using an ambient occlusion pass with this scene such as Dirtmap, it might do a pretty good job of darkening those areas up even more, and getting rid of what is happening.

Also, how about rendering at a slightly larger size, and scaling the image down after?

Sorry i couldn't be of more help,
Dan.

Think you have to switch the filer to something like gauss or triangle.

Here is another shot! This time, I reset the camera cordinates to achieve straight lines vertically and horizontally. There is a little bit of tilt going on though. Now I don't know if this fixed it, which I hope isn't the case because I don't want to always have to set my camera in this angle, or the bumped up resolution as it was suggested. The render output was 3000x3000. Another change was in the aspect ratio. Now it's 1.000 along with pixel aspect ratio. Multi-pixel filter was set to mitchell with 4.000 for width and height. AA settings, 2 and 4. Final gather rays decreased to 2000. Final gather filter set to 0.

What do you think?

The min and max settings effect those kind of details.. if you currently have them set to 0 then maya does an estimate of what you need so you probably want to set them manually.. typically the min is 10 percent of the max and the mac is the number of units across that you world size is.

looks like a trace bias problem to me...

Gmask:

Min and Max setting as in FG radius or AA? I know about 10% deal with FG radius. I think I read it in Jozvex's tutorials but does AA settings have the same procedure as well?

Yes FG.. try a Max of 3 and a Min .3 if you were to only do a scanline or raytrace you probably not see those jags.

Thank you for your reply Gmask. I think I got the idea. Although I still need to experiment with it to perfect it. And yes, regular Maya Software rendering does not produce such effects. And for those newbies (like myself) that read this post, I suggest you read up on Jozvex's tutorials.
