View Full Version : Global Illumination?
HBlaauw 08-21-2002, 10:10 AM Howdy
We're gearing up to do a huge job, and we're deciding whether or not to upgrade to max 5....
What's the Global Illumination renderer like in Max 5?
Thanks

what sort of scene are you doing? some renderers perform better in different scenarios

The GI in Max5 is astonishing!:bounce:

The GI is verry good, but slow.

Thanks guys
We'll have to build a cg city....in the daytime! So GI is a must!
Looks like max is the way to go....we can always fake it, but it would be better to use the real thing...
Thanks for the advice.
Cheers

I have been spending a good deal of time toying with the GI in MAX 5.
first: it's not Brazil.. not by a long shot
that said. it is great! once you get a full understanding of the settings and other means of speeding things up it's very fast.
I say go for it!!

Can u tell me some pointers how to speed up things then?

these are the only things I worry about:
ray/samples
filter size
cone angle
undersampling
depending your scene and rezolution your rendering to these settings wil change...
describe, or post a render of your scene

I know it looks bad, but it was just to test the new options...

oh! haha, I replyed to you post in another thread...
well, in that scene I might want 2 bounces. If I was looking to make a perfect image I would
bounce 2
turn your fliter size up to 3
cone angle 90
ray/samples 400
undersampling
16x16
3
1x1
for a quicker test shot:
bounce 0
fliter size 3
cone angle 90
ray/samples 100
undersampling
32x32
10
4x4
play with your filter size it doesn't change rendering time much and it can really alow you to turn the "sample down to" number pretty high and still retain smooth shadows
leme know how it turns out

my experience with self illumited materials and max GI is that you need to have 1 bounce to make the thing work, here are some experiences I made with max. Took too much time to render in my opinion. But then again, I only started using max for 1 month, so it might be my problem.

Testing those settings now, but it's going soooooo slow!!

what is tihs material you have applied to have it emit light? I have only head of this in Brazil. I have a advanced lighting override material applied, but doesn't seem to be doing naything different....

- Bounces must be min. 1
- in the advanced lighting material: boost up the luminance scale
- Using a self illumating base material helps boost the brightness up

threw this together, renderd in 2 min 30 sec

I like testing out those things, also gives some nice images too!
cdinic: what are your computer specs? and what were the settings you used?
here is a test i made, but it did take me some time to render

i have a dual athalon 1.45 gig Htz, Geforce 3, 1gig DDR, 80 Sea Gate HD, liteon CD-RW, Acer CD, vanta (second video card) and a sound blaster live
I am not sure what my exact settings were. but somthing like:
filter size: .5
rays samples: 200
bounce: 2
undersampling: 32x32
contrast 2
4x4
and one skylight with 0 for a multiplier...
-Chris
the scene i posted was inside a closed box, only illumination was from the self illuminated material,
Haven't quite figured out, what's best, more bounces or more ray samples I'l have o make some more testing on these i'll post again later, going to play around with the settings some more
cheers

we can all think of crazy stuff, it those who know how to execute as well as dream, then we succeed.
