Title: The Haunted Mansion
Name: Daniele Montella
Country: Italy
Software: Photo-Paint

This is a recent work done for a challenge on a Matte Paint site.

I'm start from some picture, and play with light and contrast, overpainted or create the others details.

I'm trying to evoke a sense of mystery,solitude,restlessness...with the most realism as possible.

Excellent work!
The atmosphere is perfectly rendered, and the lighting on the trees and the house seem very real!! Concerning the "purpose" of the picture, you've done everything right ;) Mystery and solitude, great description, and I wish I could see whats inside (eheheh!) :)
It may be stupid to say that, but it looks like a Tim Burton's movie set!

Nice to see someone else using Photo-Paint. Nice piece . . . normally I'm not too fond of photo-sourced mattes, but you manage to avoid the "collage" look that many such images suffer from.

great mood in this one, maby a siluttett in the window and more fog would strenthen that feeling.

That looks sweet.

A break down would be nice, as I'm sure that people would want to see the mystery behind the masterpiece. :)

You should have added some mist to give the image a more cold and dead look, you know, around the grave stones and such.

Very, very nice piece. I do have some comments though :)

- Fog: like others have said, could really enhance the image, nothing major, maybe just subtle wisps around the headstones and along the ground

- Lighting: IMHO the lighting looks strange, mostly I think it's too bright, and the major lightsource seems to be at the horizon behind the house, but at the same time it's fully-lit on the front. I assume this is a bright full moon? I think it looks like the light source is at ground level, for example the tree on the left is not lit at all from above, but the outwards-hanging branches are lit on the underside.

- Window: Just the creepy-factor here, I think you should experiment with a slightly different colour on the light from the window to make the house more malevolent, like faintly cold blue or greenish. Using the same tint on the fog would probably look nice too ;)

Amazing work though, I'd love to see more of this quality, keep it up

Hehe, it is the Carson Mansion, in San Francisco. You can read about it here http://www.eurekaheritage.org/the_carson_mansion.htm
By the way, I think the picture on this page is the one you used for the paintinghttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Very well done, although the lighting makes it look too crisp for my taste.

Nice Photo/Paint! You have created a spooky environment that pulls you in. Like your car is broke down and this is the only house for miles.

I think people get too caught up on weather people use photographic sources. I say who cares as long as it looks cool and you quote your sources, or give credit to the photographers.

Here are my constructive 2 cents. Mostly lighting issues.

The house and foreground tree have too much contrast for such an over cast day. I would either bump up the brightness of the background plate or darken the other elements
The house and foreground tree also need a minor color correction to work together.

Great!

I would have added a slight fog. A very subtile mist would make that picture even better IMO.
Keep it up.

Photo taken last week on my honeymoon in Eureka CA. The detail is all moulded and not merely jig-saw cutout detailing found in most Victorians. As a 3D artist I was mezmerized.

I want to show you my "film" test of this scene.

thats pretty amazing Danka. has a really nice feel to it.

i dont suppose you know of any good tutorials that show how to do this sort of effect in max?

what parts did you model?

were the trees just planes mapped with alpha channels? or were they modelled?

excellent work!
