Today I tried to do a setup for my rollercoaster.
It is gravity based and works in realtime now :)
The really calmative thing is that I can change the track however and whenever I want, the waggons will always follow and bank the right way :bounce:

I´m using 3ds max 6 and Thinking Particles. I´m using the geometry of the track for position and orientation of the waggons in combination with the gravity. This seems to be the most flexible way for this.

hmmm...thats really nice looking. I am useing max6 and reactor, which isnt to hard to use, but very picky on settings.

Here´s a small animation about playing around with different weights.

The waggons get their velocity by 0.5*a*(Time*Time) over a few frames. (whereas "a" is controlled by a spinner)

The first part shows all waggons with the same weight. As you can see in the looping, the whole thing drives back to where it came from.

The second part is the same except that the first waggon weights five times more than the others. This is enough to pull the others down the looping.

I think I will finish it just for fun when everything is working again.

What do we learn? Never change a working system during a production, even not during a private one!
And don´t do Windows updates!

Sorry to hear that, that really sucks. I had a GeForce4 with WinXp and Max6 didnt work in DirectX (crashed soon after starting) or OpenGL (very unstable, crashed a lot), only software mode. Once I upgraded to the GeForce FX 5600, it now works great in DirectX.

Anyways, your coaster looks really cool, would have loved to see it run. How much did you have left to do? Just rendering?

That's very sad. Perhaps you can find someone using 3dsMax, too, who can render your scene you have done til now. But I'm looking forward seeing your animation, when you manage to get your computer working again.

I think I´ll buy a complete new machine when I have the money ready.

@Sir Vulcan: Seems to be the same problem as I have. But with the new computer everything will be fine (I hope!). There was still a lot to do. No way to get it finish now.

@FrankFirsching: Unfortunately there´s no ready-to-render scene. I wanted to use the last three weeks for "animating", rendering and cutting.

Here´s also an older testrendering (without trees and so on). Just for fun renderings:

The track was designed to fit to the backgroundmusic. The name should be something like "G-Puke". That´s why that there´s all the green stuff around.

Damn, my setup was so nice and now nothing comes out :sad:
But I´ll finish it and post it here then!

That’s a shame, if you lived down here in Texas, I would drive a few hours to let you borrow my laptop... It is a shame you can’t finish, it was looking so good...
