View Full Version : Help with cartoon eyes
chadlychoo 08-21-2002, 05:28 AM Howdy guys! I need help linking puples to my eyes so when I do the look at thing the puples dont move off the rest of the eye and move along its suface. On the model I downloaded from PePeland called Ciceto (http://www.3dluvr.com/pepeland/Misc/ciceto1.htm) I think the puples are connected to the eyes by something called *FDD Binding. Is this a script that Daniel M.L. made or is it in max? How would I apply it to my character?
Here is a picture of my characters eyes if it helps...

The puples are a seperate mesh.
Obviously the model is inspired by the Ciceto model and my model is for exercise animations, just so you know. ;)

Just to join the post - I am struggling with a similar problem. How do you rotate the eyes that are not spherical?

Create the eyelids as hemispheres, then use FFD spacewarps to deform them to whatever shape you need to fit the eyes. Then, to rotate them open and closed you just rotate the hemispheres -- not the spacewarp. They will keep their shape perfectly!
edit: just noticed that eyelids were not the question. same concept applies to pupils, though; just make sure you're creating the eyes as spheres and deforming them into shape using the FFD spacewarp (you can just attach little squashed spheres on the front as eyelids before adding the spacewarp, but remember that they will be deformed as well). Then when you apply rotation to the spheres rather than the FFD, the geometry will "swim through" the spacewarp and keep its shape.
It's not the perfect solution for all cases, but it's not half bad for a lot of cartoony characters.

Micael comet has a tutorial on his site for this exact problem www.comet-cartoons.com
Create a sphere for the eye globe. Create a FFD box spacewarp around the globe and then link the globe with the spacewarp with the link spacewarp tool. Select the space warp and deform the globe to the shape you want. Attach the pupil to the globe and then voila. Just rotate the eye and it will deform after the spacewarp no matter how its rotated because the spacewarp will not rotate.
