View Full Version : Light Contouring Artefacts

Can anyone help me on this. I do plenty of still renderings, but am just getting into the animation part of cinema and wanted to do a simple test of a light turning on and off. I keep getting all these countouring bands on my scene floor from my omni light. I looked in the manual, but only find contouring correction for visible light (dither). This does not help since I am not using visible light. I know this probably seems like a noob question, but I am new to the animation side of cinema. I posted the file below to show you what is happening. Please let me know if you don't see it, then I will know it is my monitor. Thanks in advance.
are you sure its not a problem of video compression? Did you render out in picture sequence or directyl into avi/mov?

It looks pretty smooth to me but I agree with Byla; what contouring there is is probably caused by compression.

1) you've compressed the video
2) you may be using an 18-bit LCD screen
3) A 24-bit image only has 256 shades of grey

Yes you guys are right it was the compression. Thanks for the help. I tried uncompressed, and it looked much better. File size is huge though. Under the avi options there are a bunch of compressors. Which one gets the best results and smallest file size? I will look through the manual to see if there is info on the different compressions. Thanks again:)
