Wheeeee! Thanks for dropping by.
Hope I'll be able to deliver something decent here. I have no idea what to draw yet.
It'll probably be a lot of detailed buildings, some ships.... perhaps I can squeeze in some characters as well.
I'll anyway try to do something a bit different than the standard sci-fi stuff. Hopefully.
Till later.

Ok. I now started doodeling.
Been thinking a bit about what to draw and I guess I have settled with the idea of some vertical cityscape (how original). But I want more space in between; not the usually packed and tight futuristic city. As well as a more rusty copper look.
I rarely sketch like this when I'm doing personal work. I kind of plan it out roughly in my head and then I draw it, making things up as I go along.
So here are just some thoughts thrown down on paper. You probably can't see what it is anyway.
Doing this I suddenly thought of the shot from Titanic of the ship before departure. What about adding something like that, a huge thing, just hanging in the air?
And then; what about a city stretching out in all dimentions?
So I threw that into the last sketch.

Having the idea fairly worked out I tried out some compositions. This is very rough - again I'm probably the only one who can see what it is. :)
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4888/4888_1098925278_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4888/4888_1098925278_large.jpg)
Another one. A bit tighter.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4888/4888_1098925415_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4888/4888_1098925415_large.jpg)
Since the city is vertical; what about a vertical composition?
I guess I'll go for that.
(Sorry, again it's rough, but I am doing these for myself only, and as long as I know what it is.... that's what matters.)

seriously dude, that works. the perspective is great, and you can easily implement characters and ships. id just have a good brainstorm about the iconic aspect of the challenge.
and if you are concerned about originality, remember this: even the most unoriginal concept can have huge impact if handled in an original manner.

i like the last one..it reminds me of The 5th element :) ..i think couse of the colours and the vertical city...cool man... keep going..!

wwikid! this entry reely caught my attention!
Thanks!
:)
Peddi: True. And true.
Coldblooded: It's a bit 5th Element now. But I think I'll go for a darker atmosphere. Perhaps rain? What do you think?
riki: I wasn't allowed to upload bigger images here, so I am saving what's left of my server space for the more finished stuff - where you actually can see something. ;) Anyway, I look at these as more abstract work.

Vertical looks pretty good, have serious posibilities since I see a lot of works in horizontal. żA futuristic city landscape? Could work.

Just played around this morning. Trying to come up with a style for this universe.
Giant steam locs are also cool, so I mixed in a bit of that too.
Costumes.... I think I am going for a more primitive look.
Buildings.... Don't really have an idea yet.
Hope you like. :)

Another quick one just to work out the atmosphere I want.
I'm not too sure about the composition anymore....
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4888/4888_1098984661_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4888/4888_1098984661_large.jpg)
I tried out something else.
Showing the corner of a poor area to the left, pretty close up and disappearing into the picture.
Then showing downtown (if you like) with the harbour (if you like :) and some ships ready for departure; focused on a huge one. Travel is the theme I guess. Hehe.
Then more cityscape in the bg.
Any comments?

Hey man
lovely colours in second last image but thaught previous image had more impact perspective wise with the sheer verticality of the composition.
Good luck!
You both mean the very last one?
I still can't make up my mind here.

Re not being able to make up your mind - i know what you mean. My vote would go for the top one. I like the vertical composition and the energy of the piece.

your skeches are very good. since you thought about travel in the last skech, try add something to it. in one illustration by moebius he put one man who is late and is running to catch a ship. that detail made illustration much interesting.
good work.

WOWnderful scetches! Great brush stile and colors!
Thanks so far! :)
Unfortunately no updates today. Had a lot of real work coming my way this morning.
Good idea sideffect; but he's gonna have a long way to run. Hehe.
Anyway; thought about drawing the thing as it leaves to get more action.
Lots of sparks and steam and other cool things.
Till later.

Hey, that sketches are promising! Have you seen "Ironwolf"? Is a great graphic novel published by DC. I remember it when you took about primitive look. They made wood space craft, Victorian Age costumes, etc. Take a look at it. It could be inspiring and fixed with this 5th element look of your color sketch the result could be great. (Sorry about my english, people)

Just experimenting. Guess I'll go for the vertical one anyway.

Upshot sketch. Think this will be it.
What do you think?

Olve, lovely work here. Something very painterly about it. I like the vertical format, and my preference would be a kind of mix between posts 7 and 16 with some of the slightly more saturated colours in your latest. Very good, I can see the final one being amazing. Keep it coming!

Yep , I think the last one is the better.
Just wanna know what brush did you use for it? Really like the effect.

I guess it's made with painter..
Looking very good, and I like your style. You make painting look so simple, and really fast. Looks like you made them in 15 minutes.
Btw, your webpage is empty. Are you planning to put anything there in the near future?

Your color sketches have a very good sense of light and atmosphere, the last one is great. Photoshop or painter?
Thanks a lot guys! :)
It's all done in Painter IX. On the last one, the main brushes used were an broad digital watercolor brush, soft vine charcoal, opaque detail acrylics, smeary palette knife and a bit square chalk and normal airbrush, all tweaked a bit.
Btw Petri; the site was down for a while. It's up now, but have in mind it hasn't been updated for years. :hmm:
Again, thanks!

your sketches look really nice - I enjoy the looseness and confidence of your strokes. The upshot definatly has potential. It feels a bit Ryan Church - wihich is a good thing.

I was in the mood to doodle some costume suggestions, so I did.
Not that I think you'd see many people up close in my pic, but it's interesting to work on the style. Not quite satisfied yet.
The color scheme is getting closer to what I want though.

Just brainstorming really.

It's coming along well, I like the idea of the steamships. It should give you lots of opportunity to play with lighting and volumetric FX.

There is soo much detail in these sketches, and your colour choices are excellent, wish I could have your skills :) I'm always looking at your pictures studying them to "find the essence of the magic" :)
Looks to me like you are going for a horizontal image with the camera pointed up showing the tech level increasing from a poverty dystopia separeted in the bottom to a utopian high tech civilisation on the top. I like it. It's allot like how Coruscant is described in the star wars books :)

I have just stopped to say "WOW" to ur great sketch technique. I admire it! :)
Thanks again for all kind words.
Blackarts: I love Ryan Church's work, so that is very nice to hear.
I have actually started thinking about an alternative picture with more of a story to it; something completely different in other words. Guess I have overlooked the "pivotal moment" in this challenge; well, who knows; perhaps the ship is on its first direct flight to some planet far away.... but that's a bit too simple, isn't it?
See if I'll start all over again. But not today, because today it's my birthday! :bounce: :)

It's a real learning experience just seeing how differently everyone here works theough a concept. You sketches are so rough. It looks like you just keep going until you pull the image out. I love it.

Hi
Doesn´t have any comments on the concepts. Just have to say this;
That´s some great drawing skills you present here!!!
Especially the characters are great.
Keep going
Thanks for all the nice comments! :)
Well.
Have to admit that a few things came in the way so I couldn't continue on this.
And in a few hours I'm jumping on a plane back home for christmas.
I'll be back 10-11 days before the deadline so we'll see.
Maybe I'll work like hell and go mad on the feedback. If I don't.... it was great fun.
There'll probably be another challenge anyway some time soon.
Have a nice christmas everyone! And all the best for 2005!
