HI there!

I'm an Italian videogame artist actually living in Manchester

I had the same idea as you guys, to collect matlib files, to create a huge selection for everyone to share. the only thing that i was thinking about, is to make a website where people can login upload download fix or update materials and shaders.
The website won't be the only way of distribution, Multimedia CD Roms will be aviable to buy. there are few others ideas... just let me know what u think about it!:)

P.S.
Sorry for my English

Yep, this topic rocks! :buttrock:

I'm pretty new here, but I thoght someone might find something useful in this shader I made a few days ago, just for fun, and to do something in the 10 minutes waiting for my beloved coffee to be ready. :D

http://www.revai.hu/~mcdodee/upload/ver2003.08.jpg

Just some tweaking around with abot cellular maps. Nothing more. But I've liked the final result. By the way, the shader is a Brazil Advanced Shader, just because the blurry reflections, but the diffuse, and displacement maps can be used elswhere.

Oh, of course, the material itself: Can be downloaded here.(No maps, only proceduals) : Matlib (http://www.revai.hu/~mcdodee/upload/organicblub01.mat)

EEEWW!! That reminds me of my POooP00....hahaha..but i rocks:buttrock: ....where you got that? toile or something? lols....that's pretty cool... ...im making some realistic shits...out of that shader.....kewwl...keep it commin boys..help the pooor.....i like materials...it makes the world...ROUND..

cold_as_eyes : Well, if this reminds you of *that*, you've got somethin' wrong with your digestion, or just eaten too many fruits... Seeing a doctor might help... :D :hmm:

The basic inspiation was looking at the cellular map, and trying to get somethin' outta' of it. And IMO this one reminds me of something chaotic organic thingee, with some alien look. No doubt, somewhere Neil Blevins is behind the inspiration...

Currently I've started another Organic blub, so expect it soon.

You mean the "visualboo_scanlineMax5.mat" file is already available?!!
And I had been waiting for it for who knows how long already.
Where can I download it from?

Thanks,

As Torkuhl, I would also need to be enlightened on how to apply the shaders
I did check the max5 Reference Guide and its tutorials, as well as searched in Google under "applying shaders" and couldn't find a thing.

thanks,

In the material editor, first click get material. Then your material/map browser opens. It defaults to NEW in the "browse from" section. Change that to Mtl Library. Then below that, under the "file" section, select open, and then just locate your .mat file that you just downloaded. Once the .mat file is loaded, you will see the new materials, just double click one of them to load it into the material editor.

I hope I havent misunderstood your question.

javierdl
10-21-2003, 08:31 PM
But of course! I knew that
Loading libraries is not something I do that often really.

Thanks a lot folical9,

HI ALL,
i'm new here and this is my first reply in all Cg forum
i'd like to thank folical9 for those great car paint maps in MR. I used 3dsmax some years ago and now i'm restarting it again because now renders are fast and good. I use Vray and FR-stage1 but i like a lot final gather too. it creates an amazing natural lighting diffusion:eek: .
I'd like to add some materials for FR in your mat library so everyone could use them (they are 2 cute glass mat), but i haven't space web so i'd send them to someone who will post images i created with those mat too.

I am a bit of a n00b to 3dsmax and I was wondering if anyone else was missing the viewportmanager.gup Plugin when trying to open this .mat. I would VERY much appreciate it if someone would tell me where I could find this Plugin.

Thanks

a .gup error means you are using a version of max older than the one used to create the file. Like trying to open a Max 5 or 6 file in Max 4.2

Anyone know where texture goodies like Blur's Dino Skin and Electric have gone? I donwloaded the pack off of Neil Blevin's homepage but it wasn't there. I've heard that to use Visualboo's you need some of these. Where can I get them from? No luck on Google so far...

Is there any way you can make Rob's Smoke shader be based on particle age...I mean that at the end there is only smoke not smoke and fire like the way afterburn do it???

and what kind of settings do you ajust to get a better result...I was playing around with it lot in the past but I didn't really got any better result ... it was all worse....
but anyway awesome work brisck1

brisck1
05-19-2004, 12:35 PM
simply copy the 'Flame' (filter) map into an empty slot in your mat editor, then put a particle age map into the filter slot and then in the first partice age slot, copy the flame map you copied earlier. For the last 2 slots you can either add more copies of the flame map making it darker as the flames die out, or just put a dark grey and then black ;)

hamu73
05-19-2004, 01:04 PM
hey awesome brisck1...I will try that out
How did you do your flames in the image above...did you tweak some parameters or did you used the default??
thanks alot
your shader is great

brisck1
05-19-2004, 03:41 PM
yes its all at defaults, If you open up the max file that comes in the zip, turn off specular mapping (should have left this out), and turn on flameFX you should see a similar image when rendered

hamu73
05-19-2004, 10:56 PM
cool thanks brisck1....
I tried that one with a particle age and it seemed to be ok for the beginning...thanks for that tip....
when will your next version be released
thanks

I used the electric map from blur

adrihalut
06-03-2004, 06:59 AM
i'm starting to get it. the missing dll's are from plugins i don't have installed. i found that i needed mr_subscatter and color correct. i got them both but the latter does not seem to have been installed (still a missing message). i still don't see which one in particular philipbruton is refering me to.

i tried the electric from blur. made a search of .dlt files and found them all to be in \stdplugs so thats where i threw electric.std. just in case, i copied it also to \plugins. upon initializing max, i got two messages saying that each of the dlt's failed to initialize.

anyway, maybe this very helpfull thread should not be burdened with these novice issues.

thanks very much. ilan.

hello leho,

these errors are coming up cause you do not have these plugins.

Included in these is the blur lib plugin, which means none of your current blur plugins, if any, will work.

i could give you the links to all these but i aint go the time, try google for them. Most can be found at places like maxunderground/ blur beta etc....................

Maps are the individual pieces that make up a shader. You may have different maps (or not) for attributes such as Bump, Specular, Glossines, Transparency, Opacity, Diffuse, etc... Maps that you say to be in posession of are, supossably image maps (jpeg, bmp, tga, ...) also referred to as "textures".

If you can pack some nice hi-res textures into a zip for everyone, that'd be a great contribution!

CarlCampbell

Store them in your MAX "matlibs" folder or wherever else you want. Then, open the material editor in MAX and click "Get Material" and the browser will appear. Then click "open" and browse for the .mat file and it will open up containing the various materials within. Double click one to add to your active material slot (then assign it to he desired object) or drag directly onto the object you want it assigned to.

Okay great thanks, I placed Omni's and skylights, materials are dark. Using Mental ray and the shaders I had gotten from Cgtalk

CarlCampbell
08-30-2004, 11:54 AM
Your scene needs to be well lit to test materials, just try with a basic 3-point lighting setup to begin with. If you can't view the materials correctly in the material editor or viewport then you must be missing some of Blur's plugins. Also, remember that materials prefixed by fr- are to work with the finalrender engine and you'll need to use that renderer to see them in the material editor (go to options and change from Scanline to FinalRender).

Arxangel
08-30-2004, 07:28 PM

here for the mental ray shaders .mi files

--> 3dsmax6\mentalray\include\

and here for the mental ray shader .dll files

whack em on a disk and place them in the same 3dsmax root folders at work, et voila !

But I'm under the firm impression that it's more important to discuss porperties and difficulties with shader building just for the simple fact that you'll be able t recreate it and know why you're where you are sorta. Please correct me if you think I'm wrong. But I spend an equal amount at painting and figuring out the right texture as I do tweaking the settings of the materials and renderer. I mean sooner or later you must now what to look for? Or am I stupid?:surprised

I'd like to request that this forum be neat and organized like this thread:
Thread i'm talking about (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21263)
Where all the MATS or resources are neatly filed in the first 2 posts.
I am currently searching for the ones I made and will submit them too ;)
nice thread.

it is a shame virtualboo couldn't keep up with the pace
i was well shocked to see when he started this thread due to a great responsibility
it was sad to see how it ended
people got tired of slow updates, complains, shouts and swears even
the pure idea was good cuz of the keyword "share"
but it lacked a keyword "open source" to back it up
it was a shame really.

is there an online material library for 3dsmax community?
if not how about a discussion about creating one?
i am more than willing to donate my own matlib's and skills

hi. recently, i've been experimenting with self-illuminating materials on planes in order to acheive studio-like are lights. my most recent experiments have led me to colored planes, based on hdri-studio.com's products. I devloped a matlib with 11 different schemes using only standard 3ds max materials. I tested with the glow (lume) MR shader, but the Output standard shader gave out much better results. without further addo, i give you the library and a test render. from left to right:

deep blue, yellow, green, red. orange, cool tones no1, warm tones, generic white, cool tones no2, generic studio background, and on top of all of it, generic studio projector.

I found the Virtualboo mat's on another site. Although, numerous of the shaders do require other plug-ins in-order for the shader to work correctly, so some tweaking will be required. Also, most of these where created with Max 5. Hope this helps.

You don't need to open *.mat at all, just open max material editor and point to the directory which resides the *.mat file. :)

Not sure which material library your trying to download. The one from this thread has been hosted by highend3d.com since 2003. Here's the link:
http://highend3d.com/3dsmax/downloads/shaders/

If your seeking the mental ray shader library, I have all the proper links and information in the mental ray shader thread here (in post#1):
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=104578

EDIT: You may have been referring to Phillip Bruton's post about a material library? If so, the link in post #375 seems to work.

I'll try to flag down a MOD to edit the first post in this thread with the information I just posted.

renderomat is a brand new centrolized source for materials and shaders - if you have anything like that to share or show off please stop by and let other natives here know about it - you'll be most than welcome - plus the renderomat will have monthly materials contests with winners receiving nice gifts from us and our sponsors - so it wont be a useless clicking for you - we have free materials section were you can share your materials with others - of course you can sell your materials as well as we have a market place there set up too - long story short - it is renderomat.com - easy to find and easy to remember -

Just curious! I'll probably be submitting some free materials to that site soon, as it looks like you guys need some to get the ball rolling!

glad you like it - heheh - i like it too (:)) - as for the count down - it'll have some real good purpose when we get members into participating of the upcoming material contests - basically when material is posted for a certain time (each contest will have different time duration requirements) - then whoever wins the highest rate during the contest time becomes a winner - once the contest time runs out then the material ends - you can relist again of course - but the rate will be zeroed out and ready for the next contest - we want to run non-stop different contests with different awards/prizes - like graphics cards, trips to vacation spots, pre-paid money cards, prepaid dinners on us - and so on - this way the site can be useful more than just seeking for customers for your work - plus contests winners will get preferred seller status and can sell materials free of any auction fees - this way people can see who is the best and contact you for custom jobs more often than anyother current site - practically we really are different than most of the cg marketplaces you know - there is more ways to become the top seller - and really no tricks (like some sites trick you into believing that someone is a real winner) everything folks see can be checked for occuracy right on the site -

i will need to look into it as i think the ff does not load the page into cache but our download code requires a web page to be completely loaded before showing it and allowing to download - and as i heard ff does not do it - it starts showing a web page right away as soon as its reached a server - it is virtually faster than IE but not necessarily correct as a code might not be completely prepared to be displayed - thats just my thinking of it -

I know in Max9 you need to load Mental Ray renderer and then open the material editor, on the right, hit 'standard' and then select the mr Arch + Design. Look through the templates...

I've attached a picture, that is what the textures looks like when I open them in the material viewer, where is the wood texture I downloaded?

First questions would be:

1.) Are you trying to use a Max 2008-2009 material in Max 9?

2.) Are you sure materials are in right locations/paths. Plenty of people slightly misspell a directory name (missing 'S', etc.) and have problems, make sure the exact path to your mat files and maps is what is in your saved paths inside of Max.

3.) Are you certain that the mat file you are using isn't pointing to a directory that doesn't exist on your computer/network? The problem with having the general public upload content is that you are going to get a lot of variables and that is why we established a creation and naming convention and ask people to use it. We can't help it if someone uploads materials and the actual ".mat" files point to C:\Documents and Settings\JohnDoe\My Documents\MR_Materials\................ (for example) You may have to go into your material editor and point the map files to the actual location on your machine and then save the material back to the ".mat" file the first time you use it. From then on it should work, but you need to verify all of these items and anything else I didn't think of (how is that for a disclaimer?) the first time you use a material and then just save it back to the Mat file or a new one of your choice if you prefer setting up your own consolidated mat files.

On top of that info here is a link to our general FAQ on installing materials:
http://www.mrmaterials.com/tutorials/max-mr-tutorials/90-how-to-install-materials-in-max.html

I hope this helps and you can figure it out, if it is something else and you figure it out, let us know, I don't know everything and could miss some other reason it isn't working, but I have limited info from you and limited info in my head (how is that for a disclaimer?). Kidding aside those are the most obvious scenarios that come to mind, start with them and we will go from there.

Good Luck!

Nogert

Well I'm using these, http://www.mrmaterials.com/resource-central.html?func=fileinfo&id=340

They are supported by Max 9, I have a 30 day trial but I don't think that is a problem.

As for misspelling and misplacing all I did was extracted the file into the my documents/3dsmax folder and they seem to extract them selves into all the correct folder.

As for your 3rd question, I'm quite sure it's in the correct directory because in Max I can go into the material library, click open and find the material files, it's just when I open them I get the problem shown on the screenshot above.

I'll give your installation guide a read and report back tomorrow to let you know if i fixed it.

....................................................... I'll give your installation guide a read and report back tomorrow to let you know if i fixed it.

I have assumed that you worked it out since I did not hear back from you, but I thought it might have looked like I left you hanging. Jeff and I do our best to help out, the majority of the time there is a problem it is a pathing issue, second on the list is the wrong version of Max, but I don't want to just assume that was your problem. Please feel free to let us know if there are legitimate problems so that we may try and fix them.

Additionally, about once a week we have been releasing materials comprised of the full resolution commercial versions of Arroway textures, which they graciously donated. In the end there will be 20 of them. On the front page there is an article that we update every time we add a new one and it has direct links to the ones uploaded already. You will need to download the 'texture set' and then the appropriate material file (max, maya, xsi) for your application.

Hope the new year is a great one for everyone! Hope to see your contributions, this whole thread is full of people wanting a dedicated and centralized location and dead links, we hoped to help eliminate that problem, but it will take your help as well.
