View Full Version : The Golden Condor :: Mysterious Cities of Gold
TheFreak 10-27-2004, 08:14 AM Hi Folks,
Not sure how popular this cartoon was where you are all from but i remember it well in my youth and i had decided a while ago to try and model the famous Golden Condor from the cartoon. I have finally began work on it last night so i thought i would post a WIP thread to see what you all think and also to see who all remembers the cartoon.
The cartoon was called The Mysterious Cities of Gold and was about in 1983 or so, i think. Here is a pic of the bird that i am kinda of using as a ref:

And here is where i currently am (top and bottom of wings)

Well let me know what you think and i will post progress when i get it.

Wow this brings back some old memories... I loved this cartoon...
Looks like you have a good start. But the middle section on the tail does not match your photo. I also think a liitle more curve should be added to the inside top leading edge of the wing....
Looking forward to seeing this completed and would make a great animation... Will be a shame if its not rigged.
Here's a site with some god reference photo's in case you dont have it.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the comments so far, i think everyone loved this cartoon :) Thanks for the site and the feedback too Caspy, some good images in there. I think i have a lot of tweaking to do on this so i will post updates ASAP. Feel free to keep commenting though.
As for the animation, it was not my original intent to animate him. It was more an exercise to get back into the software. I might give him away when i am done, would be nice to see what other people do with the model :)
Anyway keep the comments coming, it's nice to see fans of the cartoon enjoying the work :)

Ahhh now this baby brings back some good childhood memories. I hope you are thinking about doing the Solaris next ;)
Well as for comments critiques and such: I think it's pretty darn good. I do remember how the "landing gear" worked. When the Condor took off, the legs would retract inside the fuselage, while the feet (which are teardrop shaped, except on the bottom which is flat) rotated on the Z axis so that the flat bottom would be turned upwards and would fit the fuselage.
It would be nice to get a good top and side view of the condor. Cuz i'm curious about something on the head i can't quite place yet.
Overall wonderful work mate. Keep it coming.

Your wish is my command, front, side and bottom views attached.
As for the feet i actually have a video clip of them in action so i intend to use that as a ref.
I don't know about the Solaris...i need to do something original that i can actualy use :P However if you want to give it a go then you can use this model in a nice Image :)
The head was the last thing i did last night and i have done very little tweaking so if you can give any pointers then that would be a great start for me :)
Anyway here are the pics (I also tried a bit of tidying up on the top today but i still need to tweak that):

Hi TheFreak, this is looking great so far, love the palette.
I'd suggest making sure you have a good corner at all joins to pick up as much light between surfaces as possible. Like in bottom.jpg where, on its belly, the med gold meets the dk gold, you get that nice hilight in between the surfaces. This effect is very flattering for the look of your character but appears to be lacking in the neck, head and tail a bit.
What else are you going to do with this?

Well hello again, it's update time.
I have been working away at this guy and i am quite happy with him but i need your feedback as usual.
Took you advice sumdumguy and tried to enhance the edges hopwfully it worked. As for what i am gonna do with this guy...well i dunno. I was mainly using him for practice but now i am thinking i will make an image with him and leave it at that. I will then probably give the model away for free and people can laugh at my bad mesh design :P
Anyway here are the usual top and bottom shots (detailed shots to follow)

The model looks great, like it's been ripped straight from the cartoon! If you are indeed thinking of giving it away, let me be the first to say that I am very interested. MCOG is one of my favourite cartoons of all time, I would love to do some artwork inspired by the television series!!

I likes it I likes it very much..... The pic with the feet down really gives a sense of weight and mass.
Would still love to see this in an animation but even some nice artwork would be good....
