Title: The Two Bladed Elf
Name: Kyoung-min Cho
Country: Korea (South)
Software: Painter, Photoshop

hi
My name is kyoung-min Cho and I'm an illustrator and concept artist from South Korea.

I've seen lots of good work here, but this is the first time I'm posting a work of my own: this is the picture of a female elf warrior holding two swords.

Please do tell me how you find it, and I wish all of you a nice day!
Thanks!

Great picture!
Good flow in the character en nice shading!!

She looks a bit manly in her face though... I think the nose is a little bit to big and to sharp...
But then again she is a warrior... so she should be a bit manly :)

This picture is wery well done, my main critique is that were she actually to go into battle, she would be defenceless. Without armor as soon as she swung one of her swords she sould leave exposed flesh on her sides and any good swordmaster would kill her quickly. Also, her hait would probly make her trip. However from a purly artistic standpoint very well done, i like the play on light and shadow

I love the background design, i've been thinking of doing something with an all black background but more of a velvet cheap elvis picture kind of vibe, good job. Love the hair flow, that's the biggest thing about this..... the HAIR. 3 stars

well executed, stylish and very dynamic! I agree that the face is rather manly - the nose too sharp perhaps; her breast looks like she's had implants (ie it has form but doesn't seem to have natural weight); and she has pretty big feet! anyway, I still think it's good :)

Very nice, I love the detail(I'm a sucker for detail :D) The figure is great but I would have liked some kind of environment for her to be in. But anyways good job :)

Oh and theswardsman, armor is overrated :wise: hehe. Seriously though, historically around the 15th century, plate armor became pretty useless with the introduction of thrusting weapons. There wasn't much point to wearing it since it could easily be bypassed. So they just stopped using it and focused more on ability to fight.

although the arms look a bit stiff and the hair is (as above mentioned) a bit long, the overall details are amazing:)
wonder how much time it takes too finish one like this?

There wasn't much point to wearing it since it could easily be bypassed. So they just stopped using it and focused more on ability to fight.I wasnt talking about plate armor, thats to heavy to realy be used effectifly on foot. However, if you've ever fought with a sword you must realise that exposed flesh in a fighter never ends well. Maybe a little chain mail, or studded leather would do nicely to keep her intact, again good picture great overall composition.

Great work but her arms are really coming off as stiff.

As for the armor thing...it's fantasy gang. FANTASY, as in make-believe, as in not real, as in no one could kill her because she doesn't exist beyond this painting. I could agree with the points about her gear if this were some historical piece, depicting real world characters and people but it's not, so a little room for artistic license should be allowed.

Stunning work here. Love the movement, the details and the colors you chose, nothing too saturated or "bright". I particulary like her boots with the small pate armor on the front, not sure really why but that is probably the part i like the best. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. :)

The beauty of this work aside, I've gone into battle with a thong and 10ft hair before and it's not easy! :)

The swords are really neat too. The only thing I would change about your painting is the size of the swords, they seem a tad too hefty dispite their elegant design.

But, wow, nice :applause:

If you're damn good you don't need any armor :D Elves supposedly are excellent hand to hand and melee experts so I doubt she would get hit unless she was inundated in which case armor would be futile anyway.

I admire your technique, I wish I could make pictures like that.

Just one thing bothers me about works like this. (Please, compare http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=182690). People tend to show the beauty of a character by exposing her breast and back. Look at those models - the thing that attracts attention mainly are boobs and an ass. Why can't the warrior make us respect her by some awesome armour? Why not some inspired face expression or a warrior's rage? No, instead of an elf we just got some chick with a few elvish features around her - the sword, scant cloths.

I'm aware of the fact, that the market pressure is to produce things that reach our lower instincts to attract easily. But I'd like to see such talented artists doing something really heart and mind clutching, not only visually pleasing. I believe you can do that.

Still, the picture is really great. Wish you all the best in your artistic development.

Beautiful piece!

The comment about giving herself a major haircut as soon as she uses those swords was very funny but it's so beautifully designed I don't care. The hair makes it!

Hello Cho. This is absolutely stunning. I wish your concepts could be put in animation. Or maybe you have done that already. If so I would love to see it.

Lanius
11-24-2004, 04:21 PM
I personally feel that the reason this piece is so powerful is because of the lack of a background. It forces focus on the character itself and man, wat a character!

Seeing this is high fantasy, i feel it matters not that the armour is near non-exisitant nor does it matter that her hair is way too long (nor fer that matter, her headlights are waay to big :D).

The only thing that bothers me is this is a typical elf common to Korean/Japanese (and has recently been adopted by the west. see World of Warcraft) concept, armour, looks and all (ears!). Nonetheless, i am a BIG fan of said genre.

Aside from that, the posture is excellent, the detail is there and the technique is incredible. Good work!

Very nice. The hair is...... extensive, I suppose the word is. Being an author & poet I am very fond of character drawings, and this one has a lot of feeling to it. Nice detail, as well - it draws you in. As previously said, she would last approximately .000000000000000000001 seconds in battle, but looking at this as art for arts sake, it's gorgeous. I would suggest - I know a lot of artists don't do this, but remember, I'm not an artist, so I won't be suggesting stuff you neccesarily want to listen to - using her again, somewhere else. Perhaps... she looks like the friend of a leader, kind of. A bodygaurd, if you will; someone wise who has the power to influence big stuff. Maybe... I don't know, I almost want to borrow her just to write about her.... hehe :).

Very nice work my friend, I agree any bg would have detracted from the power of the chracter, keep 'em comin'.

For those concerned on the hair, the swords, etc:

She's a Drow Elf, as any D&D player worth their salt can tell you. The Drow are an outcast race of elves, split off from all others during a schism between Corellon Larethian and the other good Elven gods and his ex-wife Lolth, chief deity of the Drow pantheon. Drow society is matriarchal, with the noble houses being ruled by Matron Mothers. The female Drow are stronger, larger and more intelligent than the males. Like all elves Drow are fast and agile warriors adept at dual-weapon wielding, unlike other elves, they are masters of wielding two weapons of equal length.

Amazing piece. Just one crit. Her armour in most places seems very flat as if it were painted onto her skin, it doesnt seem to sit on her but as if its tattoed on her skin.

you did a nice job allowing the hair to direct the viewer through the image. its a good vingette. however, if you would have pushed the gold trim on the clothes a little further and made it a little more chromatic, you could achieve a little more with your direction and accentuate some other areas that don't contrast the black background as much as others. but that's my opinion. job well done soldier.
