View Full Version : Wow! Max 5!
AnimatingFiend 08-20-2002, 09:44 PM My God, I just got it and it's spec-damn-tacular! I looked at some of the sample radiosity scenes, and saw them in the viewport nearly as nice as the final rendered versions which also rendered incredibly fast for radiosity.
I am really impressed so far, and have noticed a few changes that are really great like the spline i.k. and the improved ik itself. I haven't tried my old copy of afterburn with it yet, and I'm guessing it won't work, but I will probably use 5 to do a bunch of stuff using faking methods. I am also excited about the transluceny shader and my God! did I forget about the Ink and paint shader? Oooh, no sleep tonight, or probably a few days.

Yes, R5 does definately seem to be looking good. I can't wait until my DEMO CD arrives! What other major changes has it undergone? Also, any new UI improvements? I always value UI customization highly :bounce:

Carl I got my upgrade in last Wednesday and I must say that this is a major upgrade to say the least.
Some of the new features that have caught my eye includes:
- Updated skin modifier with pressure sensative painting API (this API can also be used to draw on your mesh like Artisan)
- New Unwrap UVW tool which helps quickly automate the creation of custom UVW maps and coordinates
- Texture baking
- Photometric lights that you can configure exactly like real world lights. Also included is the infamous Sky Light and a photometric Daylight system that is similar to the Sunlight system from previous Max versions.
- Exposure control, useful when you work with photometric lights so that things dont get washed out or over/under exposed.
- Symmetry modifier. Its like working with an instance except its a bit more intuitive, quicker to use, and it can weld verticies that are outside of its boundries.
- Vertex weld modifier which is good for cleaning up models or doing a pretty simple and logical polygon optimization.
- Normal Map creation and support for DirectX shaders... Doom 3 here we come!
- The advanced lighting solutions are cool too, very quick and easy to use. You can bake your non-dynamic lighting into a file and speed up your renders as well as allow self-illuminated objects act as light sources in your scene :)
- Extra enhancements for the mesh and poly objects
- New transform gizmo displays are sweet too.

The only thing about that ink-n-paint material is that it renders so darn slow. Rendering the example ink-n-paint chameleon scene brings my system right to its knees!
I don't see why Afterburn wouldn't work, unless it uses video post to do its thing. The SDK docs say that only plugins that use VP or IK systems would be broken in R5.
