When I heard about the challenge, I wanted to do a scene with some sort of action going on. Then I wanted to do characters too, so I decide on this sketch, which combines a little of everything in a montage. It's close to what I have in mind. Feel free to give me any suggestions.

These are more sketches. I still haven't found what I am looking for.

Definitely looks like a promising concept. Its very rough now, so I cant really comment much, but I'd like to see how it turns out.

Nice image would like to see it detailed up to get better idea what is going on. Is that a big ship crashing?

One thing that helps me, is deciding whether I want a Novel book cover feel, or a movie poster feel. Your first one is definatley movie poster style, I think that may be the style I go with, but like you had mentioned that would be more of a montage.....hmmm jsut thinking out loud. Nice layout BTW.

Just working on the lighting. I want to go with something that is more realistic. The woman on the left is an alien but she turned out to look like something from the Grudge movie. I'm going to make her nicer in character. The male character is a pilot. He is pretty close to what I have in mind. The lady on the right is supposed to be evil. I'm thinking about making her appear thinner and looking toward us a little.

Give the evil chick glowing red eyes or a huge scar, those things are classicaly evil. To make the other woman more alien, give her "ridges" on her face or head with some body marking or tatoo style ala Star Trek feeling. Hope that helps. Looks good

Quick shots of the male character. Just did these to get them out of my head. A still image just feels like it's not enough. Haven't found what I wanted to add in to the three characters.

i like your painting style, the pilot sketches are a bit confusing. i think you could get them to work though. the object oming out of the face piece makes them seem non human, maybe the development of the cockpit around the figure can help with this.
good job and good luck!

Going with this line drawing. Character is transporting in foreground to pilot huge mecha.

Color work in progress one. I'm kind of messy in style.

maybe if you put the last concept together with the 2nd last one it would look really cool.

last concept + the perspective of the 2nd last.. like engineers that are maintaining the gainormous robot.

Thanks HiPcCuP23. I really want to go with the bookcover/poster style very much because it does tell alot in a single image. However I'm not so sure that it will fit the description that the challenge is requiring. They want a static image of some sort when a poster design has many images combined. If anyone else has some thought on this, please share them because I'm kind of hesitant of the bookcover/poster design.

Still in progress. This is where I am now and there is still alot to do. I'm having a lot of trouble with the structure around the mech. I'm gonna go to a local powerplant to get some reference of what really goes on there.

Cool concept - it reminds me of a Craig Mullins image of a huge mecha robot standing at a docking station - it's one of my favourites. The biggest challenge will be capturing the scale of the robot accutratly...godd luck!

Nice layout and idea, I like your robot brings back memories from robotec and the old japanese monster movies. Good luck

Great concept...cool colours :applause:

I have noticed you moved the Mech to the central position, I did like it to the left as in your earlier concepts..... just an observation... :D

School is finished! This project isn't. I spent alot of time on the mecha but I still have to finish everything around him. So far, so good!
Any comments will be appreciated!

I like coloring wip 13. It's darker and moodier, and it looks like the angle is looking up towards the robot more. I think your lighting is not working for you right now. To show the size of this thing, make it lit from the city lights below. The uplighting will make it feel more imposing. Plus your light source right now looks like a light from a flashlight or some artificial light source in my opinion. Some foreground elements, and small dashes to suggest people would really help sell the size as well.

Great work so far. Keep it up!

this is looking very good. maybe it will work better if you move the moon up a bit on the page-- right now it sort of scrunches down on the mech. the color scheme and values are nicely refined, though it is very monochromatic. maybe you culd include very subtle transparent oranges in teh dark shadows to interact with all of the blues.

This is the last work in progress. It shows the progress from left to right. Notice that I moved some things around and got rid of many buildings. I also added a thin black border to bring out the individual objects. Overall, I am happy with what I came up with.

This is it! I learned a lot from entering this challenge. The mecha was the most fun to work on and felt like a breeze compared to the buildings. I'm glad I pulled through this challenge. It was fun!

Stunning idea. I think this would become a very exciting piece judging from the idea alone. I would love to see some more colour and detail in there.

It makes me wonder if the mecha is a conqueror, a statue or a prisoner :)
