This was to learn to make hair, up untill recently hair i think shaders have not been much cop, but as they are getting better i gave sas lite (comes with lightwave) a go. It turned out to be more of an experiment in compositing as the hair will not render through transparent surfaces and some other limitations that make it difficult to use. I was not very happy with the results and having run out of time to work on it i thought i would finish quickly it up in the hope someone gets something out of it before it gets lost on my hdd.

The lighting was done to simulate a ring flash (used to take the pic of the plant) and even though the lights cast shadows none should really be visable, if anyone is wondering why there arnt too many around.

P.S thanks to those who helped me with the composition, sorry it didnt work very well, but i learnt something and will do better next time ;)...

Good looking image. I had to stare for a minute before I could pick out any flaws... well done.
The lack of Saslite not rendering may be due to the 'lite' version. I know the full version casts shadows, so I assume it probably renders through transparency as well.
Sigh!

I remember the WIP post. Good job, but there's stll room for improvement. For instance the highlights on the flower look like full-frontal flash and the bee is more carefully lighted. Also, the image could look better with some curve adjustments in photoshop - just because your original flower photograph needs some adjustments. The tonal range (I hope this is the right term) is different for the bee and the flower picture. Like, the bee has darker dark areas.

I know next to nothing about compositing, just trying to explain myself. Very nice project overall.

Great piece of work there. I'd REALLY like to see that animated.

Very nice piece of work.

But - ;) just a couple of small (insignificant) crits.

Like dvornik said - there is a difference in the tonal values of the flower and that of the bee. Maybe give the background a bit more saturation.

Also, I cant see where the legs furthest from the camera are resting. Looks like the bee is only using it's 3 right legs for support while the 3 left legs are just hovering.

Other than that - nice work indeed.

Wow! Great work!
The fur works just great! :)
At first it looked like a low quality photo to me... :D

However one thing keeps disturbing me...
Isn't that another bee? :curious: :

WOW thanks everyone very much for the support, i really thought that this would not get anything, i guess it wasnt as bad as i thought, but i am glad i can more or less leave it now.

I think it is some kind of betle, the bee and the flower should be to scale.

the fur is saslite that comes with lightwave facial

chlywly hehe

dvornik yeah you and Jeron are spot on, i am not good at photoshop, and having looked at the pic from work ithe whole thing looks really washed out, so probably a lot of work, does it look washed out to you too? I know what you mean about the levels of the plant, and i think if it dont look right it aint right irrespective of neither of us having done much compositing ;), It is probably easy enough to improve it there so i will try before i give up on it. Strange about the flower lighting as the lighting on the flower was with a ring flash (admitedly there was quite a bit of strey light from a sunny day) and in LW i tryed to mimic a ring flash with a circle of area lights (I should have probably made them smaller). The pose of the bee was taken from a photo where strangly the feet of the other side wernt visable either, the body was at a slightly different angle though so it may have ended up a bit unnatural?

alex_m1s1n_user, hehe, actually i caught it at the local park on the same type of flower, fed it sugar and water on a bit of cotten wool and then felt so sorry for the poor thing that i released it after quite some walking to the park again that i didnt really get enough time to study it, lol, and thats the truth.

anticz http://www.tnslblover.co.uk/users/tpe/beewire.jpg :)

Cman i guess i got really frustrated with this as it took quite a while and there was a lot of fiddling and i didnt get it to look the way i wanted when i compared it to the real thing, i think i will try something easier next time.

xilica thanks

Dr_Pepper it would have been animatable (It was rigged for the pose) but compositing for animation is byond me :(

miguel446 I hope there are some other differences as well, because i dont fancy doing that again, i would like to try a totally different plugin as i found getting the hair to point in the right direction and change colour and length was also very difficult.

Neo85 thanks

K-design yeah i see what you mean, thats so frustrating.

Phew

@ anticz that is a really usefull web site you have there. The tutorials are fantastic and loads of great illustrations, I a sorry to see you are working as a concept artist, it seems such a shame to spend all that skill on mere work. Such is life i guess. Let me know if you have any old sketches lying around you never got round to modelling and send them my way love to give it a go :)

Thanks, actually I'm the supervising animator at Presto. I don't do much concepting except for my own stuff. Wish I could just do my own thing but I gotta pay the bills. You're probably thinking of Ron Lemen. I host a couple tutorial's by him as well. Thanks again and keep up the great posts!!
