I actually went the other way around from Combustion to Shake. I'd say the learning curve on Combustion is pretty steep coming from After Effects before that. I spend some time learning simply where all the buttons were.
Also Combustion is a object based compositor, Shake is node based. It's a brain tweak you'll have to make. So it's kinda like apples and oranges, really. The only real similarity I can think of is a gray background and they're both composite applications :)
So I'd say it's best simply to download the trail version on Discreet's website and try it out.

Well I went from AE to Combustion to Shake. Going the other way around, from Shake to Combustion, you'll notice a loss in flexibility from the Node View in Shake to the Schematic View in Combustion. They have a few different nodes/operators to work with, though they are similar to a degree. Combustion will give you more flexibility to rotoscoping and I would say color correcting is easier. Also Combustion and After Effects will automatically give you Scale, Rotate, Pan, Opacity whereas Shake you'll have to manually apply (Which I think is better) However, the power in Shake, in my opinion, outweights that. Also Shake renders faster than Combustion, when you have dozens of layers.
Like mrgoodbyte said, its like apples and oranges. If you were coming from AE, most new Combustion users stick to the Timeline View. However, if you are coming from Shake, you'll probably be working in the Schematic View. If I was you, see if you can get your hands on Digital Fusion. It's available on the PC and share more similarities with Shake.

i will try and find digital fusion to see what it is all about. probably download demo for it and combustion to see how they are. do u have any idea how much shake 2.5 for the pc cost. thats what we have on the pc's at school. the macs have version 3

I know what you are going through. As a shake guy with a PC at home. I would definately recommend having a look at digital fusion. The 3d departmant here is all pc and since apple's stupid move they have started using it. If you know shake it is VERY easy to pick up fusion. There is a lot of similarities, and a few nice bits. Seems very stable and capable too. I still prefer shake but ai would probably recommend fusion over combustion !
you can grab the demo from here :

mrgoodbyte: hmm, I've never tried combustion but someone told me that combustion is nodebased? Is'nt that true?
Combustion is not node-based - it is layer based.... It does, however, have a 'schematic' view which is a node-like representation of the layers. However, working in the schematic view is painful, to say the least....

Shake also runs on linux. You could try installing that and running shake.
