Did you base that second ship on some church/cathedral building structure ? looks bit like that :)

Good luck :)

mistermac
10-27-2004, 05:46 PM
nice painting, there's drama to the lighting.
I like the composition of the second piece. I think it would make a nice large scale backdrop to some sort of action.
Maybe it needs something in the lower lefthand area, like the planet being bombarded from orbit? The fact it's going into shadow there would suit something illuminated or foreground objects picked out in the light.

good start mate...

kengi
10-27-2004, 06:33 PM
azazel, yep it's a cysters church combined with multiplied gotic cathedral elevations. little bit changed here and there.
thx :)

mistermac thx for your feedback, you're right... maybe i'll do something more with this pice. but i've got totally different idea, hope to finish concept soon... stay tuned ;)

Your concept sketches are really good, and detailed despite beingi n a rough stage. I'm curius to see what you *do* use though, considering both of these were rejected.
Between them, I'd probably have gone with the first one though.

Awesome concepts! Cant really decided which one I prefer more at this point... Every piece is very promising. I like the shape of the first spaceship and the mass of the second one.

Ariyoshi
10-28-2004, 12:37 AM
I think the first one is much more "opera" than the second, but 2ş are much more refined... can´t keep with only one. :)
Go with it.

Some really excellent scenery mate, im looking forward to seeing what you develop your final piece into. Keep it up. At this stage i would assume youd be have a hard time trying to decide which one to choose as theyre both really great. I actually prefer the first one, with the orbital space station looking thing, the you have shown it makes it feel strangely familiar but also sort of alien, i really like it.

i like the church idea! space operas and religion dont usually go that hand in hand (to the extent of physical representation with technology) and so far in the this competition its the first representation of religion ive seen. im not religious personally, but i feel as far as the iconic element can do, itll really push it forward if you evolve it well! good luck.

BIG THANKS for all massagess.

ive decided to use a face. ive used mirror to get main anatomy things, from my face. its not a self portrait. :) and stretch it to make it similiar to old western movies, witch where here in poland always squished to fit tv format.

so i've produced simple perspective in the background. maybe i will add some futuristic equipment to the face.

but i think this concept will be used to produce final image. so im waiting to hear from you some strong C&C.

your painting style is so refreshing, i love your loose choppy style and new ideas. i love where this is going! what software are you using for the painting?

i don't think the face needs any equipment, his pose is so mysterious - i'd love to see you carry on the western theme with some iconic buildings in the background. to me it looks like he's staring out into the distance, setting off into the unknown and leaving behind a life or something he's done in this city...

...so you need something going on in the background that seems epic and shocking to anyone in the city, but he knows it's going on, so he just sets off without looking back..maybe as if he's ashamed of what he's done and is trying to put it behind him?

very inspiring work!

waiting for your C&C.

vapourtrail, i forgot to mention... im using only photoshop, now i'm doing perspective in 3d. witch i'll post soon.

bolchover, yeah maybe it is bit empty, but i hope details will cover this, and will add two other space ships witch are attempting to land in the cathedral city. im thinking also about lots of small 'interceptors' witch are flying next to the 'cathedral' spacecraft.

Arctis, thank you for your interesst. you can see some of my works here. (http://kengi.robal.net)

This is really great. I think the ship design has a unique look, and the compostion looks great. I do feel like you could use some more darks in there though. It's not dramatic enough just yet in my opinion. I really liked you sketch with the face and buildings in the background. It had dynamic perspective, and you felt the overwhelming size of everything. I'm not feeling that on the new sketch though. Maybe just some forced perspective would do the trick. Great job overall!

azazel
12-01-2004, 10:40 AM
First 'cathedral' concept gives IMO impression of bigger scale - maybe because of that background planet reference. It all looks smaller on the second one, some kind of size reference here would not harm.

Yep,got no crits so far, this is looking great and it's a great start.
I prefer the cathedral too and I thought that maybe some cyborg-gargoyles could be cool hanging around the ship/cathedrale...Just an suggestion.
I'll sure be back here, good luck mate!!!

The cathedral/ship is a good idea. Quite unique. Perhaps it is too literal, tho. It almost looks like someone took one and just placed it in space. Maybe take the ribbed buttressing and bulk it up a bit. Or have the buttressing go completely around the ship. Remember the design of the large ship in Alien Resurection? It took from the idea of repeated forms like the buttressing of gothic churches. Take the usual elements seen in space craft and integrate them a bit more into the motif, then I think you will have somthing indeed special.

for me this is one of the most exciting threads in the competition. I know you're working in photoshop...how do you get thoose brushes?! (like the one with loads of small dots) i have to say your painting style is inspirational. how is the latest painting going to fit in with the other stuff?

for that grand space opera style, you could put something absolutely huge on the surface...

Laputa - Castle in the Sky actually isn't Beksinki's work, but an Anime by Hayao Miyazaki.
In the film there is a warship named Goliath (http://www.derbaron.ch/werke/laputa/galerie/filmszenen/seiten/171.htm), it looks like a dark cloud sent by the gods.
Then I thought, if a surrealist like Zdzislaw Beksinski ever was to produce his own version
of Gulliver's Travels (http://www.jaffebros.com/lee/gulliver/bk3/index.html), it would have affected me similarly. Alas, I believe, this wouldn't be
his style. So Im glad that you exist, too.
