Ok ive got an image here from the Final Fantasy movie, very good it is aswell :)

My question is how did they achieve the soft look to the image. Whenever i model something no matter how perfectly smooth it is, it always looks hard when I render it. Even with a really good texture trying to simulate skin, it still seems hard.

Is it in the lighting / shadows and colour of the lights ? Or is it achieved in the model iself.

Does anyone know how to make a render look soft.

Hope i explained myself ok :)

I think the look primarily comes from a Sub-Surface Scattering shader which allows the light to blend into semi-transluscent surfaces such as candles or our skin. This is also the same technique that the PDI guys used on Princess Fiona in Shrek. Other obviously influence the look, but I think it pretty much comes from the shader itself.

In 3DS Max this effect can be achieved in advanced rendering programs such as Final Render, Brazil, Vray, and to a limited extent 3DS Max R5. Neil Blevins wrote a very interesting document on this feature that is worth reading if you have the time.
