Hi, im a first timer to CGtalk and a pretty new animator. I use a freeware program called anim8or its good but but the render portion of the program isnt to great so dont concentrate to hard on the quality of the renders/ materials. I hope to import my finished model into a second program and do the rendering there for better results (like reflections and etc).Anyway this model was inspired by Tristan Bethe's grasshopper. C&C needed and welcomed.

update: ok i have started the work on the shell, im going in a little different direction from the rest of the model. And just to point out those are the starts of solar panels on the shell.

It's looking good, so far. I like the lines of it.

One way to "dress up" a mediocre renderer is to use a "globe" of lights, from 16-20 or so, each one set at maybe 15-25 % of the potential brightness, and then a single light at 50-80% brightness for your "primary light source". I've gotten some pretty durn good results out of Rhino's otherwise lackluster render that way, for preview pics while I'm working on them.

So are you going to have the head "retract" into the shell? Otherwise, the neck seems just a wee bit long to me...
