View Full Version : Painting Weights
SunTzu69 10-25-2004, 08:05 PM Hey all,
(Yeah its me again.) Well I finally got to start painting weights...kinda cool. I'd actually enjoy it more if it didnt stutter so much. Its kinda laggy when I'm doin it. Why? is there a way to speed things up so that it doesnt have like a 3-5 second lag while I'm brushing and its trying to update?
Anwyays, on top of that, I'd love to hear some guidlines on how I should be painting my wieghts since ive never done them. Lemme know. Thanks. Oh and if there any other ways to quickly modify them, to expidite my work, lemme know.
Thanks guys.

Did you delete history before you started painting? An object with a lot of history will slow down weight painting.

No I didnt, if i do will it delete the skeleton controls to the skin bind? just wanna check before i do that.
What morganism was asking is if, prior to binding the skin to the skeleton, did you delete history. Yes, deleting history prior to painting weights will kill the bind, but in maya 5.0 bonus tools there was a delete history but preserve skinning option, and its probably around somewhere in maya 6.0 as well.
Also, are you painting on a very high poly/smoothed object? Are you painting on a subd surface?
What are your maching specs?

Yes prior, i did. I'm not by my machine now. so are you saying I should again delete the history for the changes ive made? using that option? Anyways. Im running a p4 3.0 1 gig memory, scsi hd. nvidia quadro4 xgl 980 er whatever the card name is. so i think one problem is that my model is just so highpoly and smoothed :(.
anyways any other help would be great. thanks...oh are there any rules of thumb to follow when im painting the weights?
thanks guys.

You can also use the Component Editor as an alternative(then select the tab <Smooth Bind/Rigid Bind). You move an arm or leg..whatever..then select the verticies of your choice and set them from 0-1. I use that AND I paint weights. Sometimes its hard to reach certain areas with the paint weight brush.
