They both work very well

I guess you just have to decide where to put hours into your setup time...

2000 you will have to download forever to get it up to date

XP you will have to dive into the bowel depths of the os to turn off all the crap that Microsoft preinstalls

thanx for the tips..

i heard it is quite a long way to go to make XP into something without all the blinking and colorful gadgets :)

Quite a long way to go? Ummm... No? All you do is switch it to classic mode, and it's practically indistinguishable from Windows 2000.

Rumors, rumors...

Actually, I recently switched form Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Maya is FINE under WinXP. There is only ONE gripe I have about it, and it's in the knowledge base at A|W. It has to do with the render view. Basically, when you are rendering, and the render view is updating visually... If you switch views, or open another window in Maya, or minimize Maya, or, say, check your email or anything, when you come back to Maya, the render view will not update again until the render is finished. It just stays white. With Windows 2000, when you did thatm it would refresh the render view when it rendered the next block. --But it's not a huge deal. Certainly not a deal-breaker. Performance on each platform is not noticeably different (For me).

ahahah rumors.....WHy dont you compare the list of services and processes in xp to 2000

Switching to classic just messes with the interface.....

ahhah rumors...thats rich

I don't believe I mentioned anything about services or processes. I was merely addressing the RUMOR that it's hard to make WinXP LOOK like Win2000. It's easy and next to instant. HOW it does it ("just messsing with the interface" or otherwise) is irrelevant to what I was saying. There's no need to resort to personal attacks over someone responding to a post.

"i heard it is quite a long way to go to "

is NOT talking about experience. You HEAR rumors. You HAVE experience. I'm done with this childish conversation now.

hmmmm.. hehe

well glad that's over. :D

alexx, I would say stick to Windows 2000. From what I've seen between work and home, Win2k uses less ram to just be up and running. If you have a gig of ram, that's not a real problem I guess, but it sort of bothers me.

On average, with almost nothing installed on my computer at work, XP uses up 144 megs. 2000 used to use about 80 if I remember correctly. Depending on how much ram you have available, this may or may not be of any importance to you. Just figured I'd let you know. :)

Hope this has been helpful.

Hmh, is it really that weird to have only 256mb's of RAM? :)

PS. No, I won't buy more before I get a whole new motherboard, as this uses the old SDRAM ones, and why buy those old sticks which will be useless immediately when I buy a new motherboard?

;)

YES it is weired to have only 256 megs :)
i have even 512 in the machine here at home where i only do mails and chatting *hihi*

then I'm a weirdo! :D I have 256 on my "dude you're getting a Dell" and it's not going as fast as i'd like it to anymore. I'm thinking of upgrading to 512 as I'm sure that it'll make a difference in performance... even if it's the old SDRAM?... I hope so, I might be upgrading in a while.

Yeah well, I guess another 256mb log wouldn't hurt my budget that much, but I have to think about it, as I'm going to buy one of those AMD Hammers as soon as they arrive (Or atleast soon after), and it will be old then, and Maya does work smoothly... it just wants to be alone ;)

:wip:

Hi,
for those who get nervous from pop-ups and auto-logIn in the Internet, I can recommand the Freeware (!) "xp-antispy" from www.xp-antispy.de

Itīs availible in over 10 languages, once installed I never had problems with pop-ups and that stuff.

Try and enjoy it.

i just upped myslef to 1 gb, but before i was working with 192 mb, and that would tear apart anything 2d. photoshop, illust, dreamweaver, flash or all at once. but....3d is a little more poopyheaded when it comes to ram.
