View Full Version : Looking for a feather tutorial
Mattb573 10-24-2004, 11:57 PM Hello everyone, I was wondering if there was a good tutorial out there for creating a feather. (or someone could assist me) I am trying to make it relativly realsitic. It will be a single feather, that I want to animate for a logo, so if there is an easy way to make the hairs (for lack of a better word) for it, that would be most helpful. (I also have maya 6 if it is easier to make it with that) I am just learning both programs, so any help would be great. Thanks!

maybe you should go look for a grass tutorial, i guess that would be the closest kind of tutorial to multiplying strands of hair. just use the same tutorial to duplicate splines of hairs on the feather.

I made a feather simply out of a Photo.
1. first take a Photo (Digitally or scan it)
2. Go into a 2d Programm
3. Black out all what is not the feather
4. copy the black to a new white image (that is the alphamap, for the alphachannel)
5. Go into Max
6. Create a Plane
7. Create a new Material (Opaque/Transparency Channel the Alphamap, Diffuse Channel: the normal Picutre)
8. Assign an uvw map (plane) to the plane and drag the material on it.
Thats the easiest way to make a realistic feather, without many polygons.
but of cource she is not freely to Animate (maybe single Hairstrainds wake in the Wind, that is impossible with this way).
