Hi all!

This is the best chance for a comeback on CG Talk. A few of you know why I was missing so long and couldn't finish the last challenge. To make it short: Life went hard on me...

Now I am back on my feet(Still butter-knees, but standing!) and look forward to participate in this challenge with my old friends from CG Talk and all the others.

Enough talk for now. I hope I'll come up with a few ideas soon. This is new territory for me, so I need a bit time of research and brainstorming.

I wish u all the best for this CG Challenge and good to see so many familiar faces from the Machineflesh Challenge too.

Seems like everybody from the last contest is around. And im not nearly as dedicated as in the machineflesh competition. So gotta sharpen up my act.

Hope you finished your machineflesh entry newerthless?

Ok then... Here is my Conceptsketch of the Composition. Not much to see yet, but I hope it gives you a first impression.

Story: Once in a decade, the "gods" of the Mesmoramiels return. The Big Day has come and everybody is waiting for the aproach. They never landed but this time, the wise male pronounces to his folk, seems to be a good day...

Not very original, but I am not that expirienced(<--spelling?) in storytelling. U have to excuse...:)

Tommy ... I really hate having to say this all the time, but "welcome back!" I understand how things don't always go as we want them to, but damn I wish you were around to post your stuff more frequently.

Good luck on the challenge. I'm liking your concepts so far, except for that 1 point perspective on your mothership. (bleah ... go 2 or 3 point please :D ) Actually, the last sketch has a really nice look to it, but I think an up-shot would do better to convey the grand scale of the spaceship.

I'll be checking your work. Keep going my friend. :wip:

11-04-2004, 11:39 PM
Hey Tommy!

I love the character sketch! The environments are cool too. I agree with Kirt about an upward-shot conveying a grander scale...but, I think it could also be more interesting to see the downward view.
Glad to see you back and good luck!

Sorry for not updating so long...

Any way here you go. I am still far away from knowing, what I wanna do in the final concept, so I keep on doodling.
The most important point for me is to add also a twisted feeling. But that's hard for this subject(Especially for my style). I think that's the reason I take so long to come up with something usefull.
Any way... I will finish this challenge that or that way:twisted:

Now to your replies:

@jeroen: Thanks mate! Love to have u in this one too:thumbsup:

@Kirt: And I am glad to be back. If everthing works out fine, I'll be able to stay. I hope to get an industrierelated job. That's why I also working on my new website, Paintings, Concepts and an entry for the Expose 3.
About the perspective. You're absolutly right. It's boring. I think, in the end I will go with a twisted, Tim Burtonesque perspective(If possible). We will see,... my brain is cooking!:scream:
Thanks for your post and nice words... cheerz my friend!

@wildsheepchase: Thank you very much rachel:love:Your questions/suggestions are answerd in Kirts reply. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers dudette!

Tommy, good to see you in this challenge, I really enjoyed your Machineflesh thread. Those last sketches rock, man!

SteveNewport
11-06-2004, 12:11 AM
Some may argue that post #10 & #16 are boring perspectives, but I think it's fairly fitting for the feel I'm getting from your concept. The idea is Return of the Gods, and the 1-point perspective gives the intimidating dynamic of something large and unknown coming straight towards you (in this case you are the small birdlike aboriginees). It might even be worth your while to add an altitude perspective to enhance the intimidation factor as the aboriginees seem to be fairly small in size

Looks like your characters are coming along very nicely, but why did you choose birdlike creatures? What's the story behind the aboriginees and why are the Gods coming back? And are the natives expecting the return?
I think I like your first character sketch best of all... the latest one atop the flea-like labor animal feels too human to me, I believe it is because of the long legs. I feel with your concept it might be best to stay away from anything human as it will enhance the fantastic feel of your other-worldy inhabitants as well as give more credit to your creativity, which will, in the end, be the biggest factor in who is most noticed.

I'm sorry, I havn't seen any of your other work, but based on your primitive sketches, I'm sure you're very well known and established in the field, I anticipate good things from you, good luck and take care

good character painting; if you are sticking with the native idea, remember that it would also have a culture and various artifacts/ items it carries/ uses. what sort of ornaments would be worn on the body? I like the staff, i guess i'm just saying that he might need more of that sort of thing. good luck

that bottom right creature was immdediately my favourite , even
though each creature got some cool elements.

you should enlarge that fav critter in the middle , can't make out

#5 looks very peaceful... so very good job, dude !

Hi Tommy !

I looked through your sketches, very impressive work. The perspective really shows
the incredible size of the "gods" ship. Are you going to add some haze in the atmosphere/sky ?
Whenever I saw such an effect, the ship looked not only more distant, but also larger
than before.

good work so far.

Those two last sketches are awesome! I'd like to see some wip images of the last one. The natives design's really cool, a mix of so many animal-parts/properties. Like Squibbit I also liked the bottom right creature the best.
On the concept thumbs there are many ships, instead of one like in your initial concept. I think drawing more than one ship would take away something of the 'gods' feeling...

Kraull
11-15-2004, 12:29 AM
Your last character is really nice! I kind of like the texture of his skin and the general shape of it. There may just be a little thing I'm not quite sure about. It's the way his eyes look... There's something weird about the expression that makes him look more instinctive, more animal... less sentient. Maybe I'm wrong, but anyway, it looks great! :)

Again, very cool concept. From afar it looked like its right hand was the jaw and that the little hairs on its cheeks were the teeth, but after closer look the right hand, (which looked like a oversize jaw) was really a hand.

Looks great. :) Keep up the awsome work!

Hey dude, I'm just going around to all my subscribed threads and posting this link.

It's an article written by Greg Martin (quite an accomplished space artist) about, you guessed it, space. It tries to convey the passion he has for it, the beauty and mystery it contains and just a bunch of inspirational stuff that I believe is very fitting for this challenge and I think it will help all of us. It has a wealth of hubble space images and images from other great artists (and their websites) So anyone reading this, download it and read it all, I believe it will be of help

I really love where you're going with this and I hope I can chime in sometime soon with some crits, take care!

First look at your work here.
I like the idea of contact between highly advanced and very low technology people. Your character design is definitely looking alien, however, still bipedal.
I'm not too sure if I would associate Grand (I mean really grand) Space Opera with it but I am certain many others will. The concepts look very well executed and there are a lot of ideas in there. Good luck to you in any case.

Started with the lineart. As you see, I use the concept as referencelayer and draw the lines on a new layer. I'll keep it very simple, because I wanna add details while coloring.

Hi Tommy, glad to see you back from the hols. You need to get cracking! It's looking to be a great pic, I really like the characterisation. I notice you seem to have ditched your values with the colour example, or are you going to start from scratch? Good luck however you decide to continue.

Ahh, yes I remember - you made this very strong sketch (the vertikal one). Where have you been, dude? You make such incredible stuff. This canīt be leaved unfinished. This image rocks.

The cloud configuration looks good. But I think it could be look a bit smoother. The current consistency look to layerd. But this says somebody whoīs struggling hard with his own clouds. :)

I especially like the easy bearing of the right character. A very cool reaction on such a big event.

Wish you a good workflow on the finishing line.

BTW- Do the people in Asia /Taiwan have the same tattoo wishes as in other countries/kontinents? Or is it overall nearly similar.

@Fahrija:Yeah,... I don't know why I did that with the character. Is like they passing by the 100th time and he is like:"Well, there they are...":D
About the tattoo wishes. They are in every culture different. Here in Taiwan I do mostly my own style, because most of the people wanna have something special, Not the typical dragon/clouds/cherryblossom thing when they come to me.
Anyway,... thanks for the comment!

Hi Tommy, it's looking great. Keep the coffee brewing and go for it. One thought, and please completely disregard it if it isn't easy to change, but how about adding a little bit onto the left hand side of the canvas so that the ship isn't cut off? I dunno, maybe it won't matter once you've got the atmospheric perspective in there, but I'd prefer to see the ship with sky all around it. Other than that minor point, no crits, love the colours and style... I'll check again tomorrow. Good luck man!
