Bottom of the page: SRP for XLR8 will be $595????

No C4D is for $595. That does not include any of the new modules, just the base package. C4D the XL bundle is still $1600.

okay waitaminute...

so what exactly does the basic Cinema4D8 have other than modelling tools?

BrandonS

I'm not exactly sure of it's full power, but I would assume that it is similar to what C4D ART used to be.

but the render engine is a separate module too... if I'm understanding correctly, that would pretty much leave just modelling tools in the basic app...

I'm not complaining, I'd just like to know what's included at the lowest level...

BrandonS

The render engine is included, just caustics and GI are in a separate module.

kewlness... this actually is a good selling point... inexpensive at this level, yet you can add... STUFF :D

I finally understtand what they meant by "modular"

It's not an approach any 3D Platform I've yet seen has used...

Strata started doing this a few years ago, but offering the base package for free. But they haven't done much serious developement in years, afaik.

interesting...

But Strata wasn't ever very popular that I know of... I believe it was originally a Mac program that got ported... but never caught on...

Basically, and this probably isn't a hundred percent accurate I bet either as we get all the modules together so its hard to tell whats na module and whats not, (which is good as it shows how seemlessly the modules fit into R8) Cinema 4D R8 is similar to R6, it has animation capabilities including the new amaxzing expresso node system, the new attributes manager, new layout cutomization, edge tools f-curves and the likes, lots of nice goodies, the one big thing you would loose compared to XL7 that makes it more like 6 is the GI/caustics, YOu now get that and more in the advanced renderer. Then there is Pyrocluster module, Bodypaint module, Dynamics module, and net render module which are all self exlpanatory, basically the plugins that they used to be but some may be a little better integrated, and finally the thinking particles module which is the new advanced particle system for R8 which i must say is proving to be a very powerful system. Now this module doesn'tmean you won't have particles in R8 by itself you still have the old particle system which could also be a little more powerful is you use expresso to help control them more I gues, though this is a little out of my league :)

HTH as far as I understand things and without saying to much to get may arse kicked.

LOL, you wish ;-)

The $595 price is for CINEMA 4D R8, the base package. This is a requirement to use any of the extra modules. The base package includes everything from XL6, plus you also get:

Vastly faster rendering
Very fast OpenGL
XPresso nodes editor
All the new modelling tools
Brand new timeline and sound scrubbing
the new attributes manager
Edge mode
Edge loop tools
Multi select
Point/edge weighting
F curves
Multipass for Adobe integration

Plus a mountain of other cool stuff I haven't got space for here. Even though at $595 its the simplest program Maxon sells, it is still extremely powerful and shouldn't be discarded as a cut down go, se, lite, le, home.... edition. If you dont want the advanced features such as Thinking Particles, Radiosity, Caustics, Pyrocluster, MOCCA, Network rendering... then the Release 8 base package is an insane bargain.

imashination, THAT is the information I needed.

Please note: that when Maxon say's "Modular" people are thinking modular the way Lightwave is modular which is completely different.

The way LW is modular separates and makes it difficult to use Modelling Tools in combination with Animation tools for insttance...

Cinema4D is NOT limited in this fashion in any version I've seen.

That's the cool thing about Cinema's "modular" design. I gather it's just like BodyPaint; if you buy a module it integrates seamlessly into Cinema's interface.

Also, I just want to add: that if it's got everything XL6 had plus, it definately is one hell of a fantastic deal..

didn't I just say it integrates seamlessly. I mean some of them do since they are basically like the plugins before just a little god know what to make them better integrated with the new features of R8. As for Mocca and TP, well seriously TP works so well in the node system its hard to imagine that for some users it won't be in there. And Mocca fits in pretty good too so you never really feel like your in a new app or a seperate app or anything you just in R8 with Advanced plugins called modules.

An upgrade from Art to BasicModule+Advanced Renderer costs as much as an upgrade from XL7 to 8 XL.

I go from Art to 8+AR. I mainly upgrade for the new modelling tools as I'm not into animation. I already have Bodypaint, and XFrog says me more than animation features.

Can't wait to try the new modelling tools. I was tempted by ExtrudeNurbs Pro by Arndt von K., but I'll wait...

Edge extrude pro can still doi sonme other cool things, I would still consider it. wait and see what arnd't comes up with for an r* kind of plugin.
