How would you have the generi rig hold an object(ie a soda can)? I have heard of the use of constraints, but not sure how to use them especially with the generi rig. Any help would be wonderful. THANKS!

point constrait the object to the ikhandle of the hand.
if you can't find the ikHandle, constrait it to the control. :)

Another way is to put the can in a null group and then parent constrain the group to the wrist/ik handle. The reason for the grouping is to give you to the freedom of being able to animate the group seperate from the hand. If for example you wanted to have him spin a basketball on his finger or twirl a pen through his fingers. Then, when you animate the hand, the object will follow along.
