I'm just starting off learning Maya and I'm trying to figure out lighting. If someone could take a look at these links and give me some advise I'd really appreciate it!

I think the day version is working but there seems to be a reflection of light that is showing up as a line on the back wall and I have no idea where it is coming from. Any ideas? The scene is basically setup using spotlights from all directions (except the back of the room).

The night scene is what I really need help with. It's just not working. It doesn't look like there is light coming in from the window - the window looks too flat, for starters.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Just use a darker tone for outside the room. And your floor is completly dark, it's supposed to receive some light right? And the ceiling looks needs to be darker in my opinion. In general you wont need to light your scene in a "adiosity style" when you're after a night lighting
Overall I think that a room in a night lighting conditions would be less lit. Then it seems a little bit hard to judge a lighting of untextured objects. Try to add some simple textured sets and post again, I'm personaly interested in this type of lighting, and indeed you'll get what you need from feedbacks.
Good luck.

For a night scene, you don't need to make the whole scene dark, instead keep careful control over the bright areas and highlights, and use a lot of contrast. Maybe the light coming in from the window could be a brighter yellow, and then tone down the blue to something dimmer and less saturated for the rest of the light. (A saturated blue light hitting a pure red floor would make black . . maybe both the floor and the light too saturated.) There can be some highlights or rim light on the edges of the window and any furnature you add as well, just enough to give some definition to things.
