I started to think about the theme at last. I still have no idea what i'm doing. I tried to catch an "orbital bombardment" atmosphere here. I'm going to do more of these...check back soon...

well done...

Right side is slowly fading away to cold.

Thanks for the comments. I'm still thinking for new angles and color schemes. I'm going to design some ships too. A big armada, and a poor planet. I don't know, i may suddenly change my mind and go for an earthy atmosphere. On earth i mean, not in space...we'll see.

In this picture i'm still trying catch a cool angle and color scheme. The ships designs are random. I want to blast a planet, but it's gonna be hard to get that effect. I'm gonna do more different angel shots and different ship desings...

Great work, Atmospheria! Your concepts really look good...Ryan-Church-like...I agree with Gük, the color-scheme of the first image looks better...The first one really looks good, with the solitary spaceship heading toward the battle.Your techinque is wonderful!

This one is definitely a thread to look out for!

Here's a new angle idea. I'm slowly getting into ship designs. I like long shaped ships and there will be some designs like these in the final image.
Still trying to catch the best angle..

Congrats! Very nice sketches so far!

I´m not totally sure about the vertical ships design in the last one... maybe you could put some of them in other angles, so we could understand their unusual shapes better...

Anyway, it´s great. Looking forward to your updates!

10-31-2004, 05:34 PM
love the color and atmosphere, but I agree with the last post - I think you need to do something to break up the verticals on the ships. It looks like the planet is being bombarded by sex toys.

emrahelmasli
10-31-2004, 05:48 PM
Pentagramma - Thanks. Yea, i'm going to post the ship designs now.

I like the composition of concept #4 the best, but I also think the one centralized explosion in #3 is really good, and the ships probably should not all be flying in the exact same direction. Good work.

Great work... all sketches look promising, color and composition. But I like the lust pencil sketch best… Mother ship concepts rocks!!! I tend towards #5 but that’s just me and love of sailing… it looks more like a yacht, big sail in space.

Keep it up

Hello!

Nice ship designs! Nice colours! In my opinion your best concept is the "orbital bombardment 3" but the explosion was very little . Maybe you like a nuclear explosion in big scale  .

Only one question, please  : what's your favourite tool? Maybe Painter?

Thanks you very much!

Good luck for all.

Awesome concepts mate, i really love the thumbnails youve generated of the ships, great details. Sice youve shown all that great stuff in the thumbnails it would be a real shame to loose that in the final image. You definately have to find some nice views to see those ships from rather than just seeing the backends and thrusters. I will definately look forward to seeing some more updates, keep it up.

Here is a colored version of the mothership i'm working on. I'm still not sure about the design. I'm gonna make some fixes here and there, maybe some major changes. It needs to be an original design. After designing some ships, i'm going to return to color studies. Enjoy...

Excellent design and use of color Atmospheria!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide to do with your designs. Don't dwell too much on the design as they are all very well designed. Also as you decide on your final design, you should probably have already thaught about the the type of people that inhabit these ships. This may help in your design as well.

Personally, story before image is the more effecient procession. Of course whatever youre most confortable doing is ok in this matter as well.

Good Luck. I'll be watching this one.

Dang dude, this is like Homeworld meets Jacques Cousteau! I love the ship design and the look of the artwork so far. I think the thing that hinders this is the "grandness" factor. It has the "coolness" factor nailed to the wall but if this space opera is to be grand, you have to figure out some epic representation. Come to think of it, I don't have the "grandness" or "coolness" factors nailed yet... ..back to work!

Atmospheria, you are one of my favourite : scale, ambiance et movement, organic design, and a personal artistic touch.
Personnaly, I don't agree with Marc 001 about lights : it's art, so we have not to be only logical : for many centuries, painters added light sources wherever they needed, to make their picture more striking.
My only remark woud be that the last picture don't really tell a story as much as first sketches. Maybe ships in the background could be bigger, so that we have the impression of an imminent assault.
But anyway, beautiful start.

Lokust - Thanks man. I'm glad that your first post is for me. Hope to see you around.
Rares_Halmagean - Thanks alot. Yea, you're right about what you said. Concepts have a story ofcourse. I decided to change the subject. The ships will remain but the entire scene's going to change. It would be nice to post some character sketches as well. gonna think about that. thanks.
Russell_Collins - thanks russell. I like homeworld but only similarity with it is the vertical ships, yea maybe the colors a bit. Trying to achieve different looks tough..One of my main purposes is to catch the grandness factor. Thats the magic. thanks again
taz23 - Hey man...whats up? Saw your entry. Good luck with it.

Hi all, i decided to change my subject cause someother people started to do the same subject with me. I need to be more original in my stuff and i don't want to do the same thing with other challengers. So i came up with a different idea. The ship designs will remain but the overall composition and theme gona change. Ok, here's the theme i'm thinking about. We're on earth but another time-line. Maybe a symettric timeline to ours. Oriental countries are the most powerfull and have the technology. As you can see in the image the architecture is more orient based. Visitors from another galaxy are attacking the planet. This is not the last composition. I just tried some colors. There will be different composition sketches. After i come up with a cool angle i'm going to start to the final image. This is it for now. Enjoy!

I like #2 as well. It looks good. This may just be the way the sketch is and ignore this comment if you realized this but make sure to not have the tip of the ship touching the very top of the composition. Either have extra sky above or crop the tip of the ship off in a decent amount so you don’t have a tangent. I recommend not cropping the ship. It's a nice ship!

The second one is looking the best. It has the main object, the big ship looking to the right side (the way we read) and than u have 2 boats in the bottom of the pic, aiming with their noses to that big ship, making the eye of the viewer goes to the main object. The composition there is just great with some "unimportatnt" elements in the back and u clearly show the action with a smoke in the city. It has it all and it has it in right places. Go with that one if u ask me :)

Your ship is amazing! I really like the design of it! Like you, I think the best of your composition is the 2nd, but I kind of prefer the 2/3 view of your ship in the 3rd. We lost too much of the shape in the 2nd, but it's cool... Anyway, just a question of perception. Nice work so far!

I'm going to stretch the canvas a bit to right and left. That will be helpfull for the comp. Yea, there will be fighters flying around.
melkao - thanks. I'm doing it.
BlueEyeLizard - thanks man. Yes, i recognized it. I've sized the canvas a bit...to the top and the sides. That will make the composition more readable.
monsitj - thanks alot. Workin on it

Arctis - Thanks alot. I hope it will be fine.
NinjaASSN - thanks alot man. You have a good eyes. It's exactly whats going on there. Aiming the viewer to the main object. I just need some real mood...that's the most importing thing in a painting.
rusty_carr - thanks alot man. Actually it's not china, it's middle east. But i recognized that your orient is asia. Thats good too :) What i'm trying to do here is to give an oriental feel to the architectures and the vehicles. a civilized empire but not that strong. Strong, but on that planet only..hehe. Visitors are soulless killers. poor people have no chance against them.
Ondrayce - thanks alot.. appreciated

Hi Atmospheria. Like everybody here, I love your ship designs, very well worked out and original. I'd like to see a bit of variation in their orientation, though the way they are presenting a united front really makes them seem to dominate the sky more. A touch of three point perspective would vastly improve the feeling of height and integrate them into the scene. At the moment they seem to be hanging 'behind' the foreground, rather than floating above the plane of a city. Still looks fantastic, I'm digging deep to find some crits for you.

More, please!

Neozoom - thanks for your constructive comment. I can't tell all the story in the previous pic i did. Because there will be some action on the sea, maybe some burning ships and stuff. So i decided to make the last composition. I'm going to widen the pic a bit to the right and top. It is going to help us to read the comp. better. The mothership is too centered. I need to brake that. Anyway, thanks again.
Nomad - Thanks for the comment. You're right about the destroyers and carriers. I need to add some more ships to the composition. But it's same as i said to neozoom. I need sea to describe this epic.
techart - Thank you. Appreciated.
flyingP - Thanks
Kraull - Thanks alot.

johnny boy - Thanks. I'm going to add some more ships to the sky but they are not going to make it too crowded immo. anyway, we'll see.
SideAche - Thanks alot for the comment. People like that comp alot :) But, beleive me this is going to be better.
Octothreat - thanks. I hope
Speaky - Thanks alot man. You are right in some points. I'm going to try to break that "hanging" feel of the ship by adding some more mood in it. The ships need to stay in one direction cause they are still moving towards. Burning whatever they see on their way.

Thanks alot my friends. gonna fix the composition and post soon. Check back again.

Wow!

You've obviously put a lot of work into your drawing!!!
I really like what you have so far..
If i may offer up a few crits;

the scale of your ship can easily be mistaken at first, given it's simplicity (which, if you ask me, is a good thing). Perhaps you can counter that by changing the view al little bit... I would suggest you place the ships using a "contre-plongé" perspective (sorry, i don't know the english term). That is, the view point of something on the ground, looking up at an angle. we would see the underside of your ships and the top would seem to fade in the atmoshere, giving it a true sense of scale. Also, you could then show a few more ships descending from the ionisphere...

a few observations:

Have you noticed your motherships look like a cross beween a sailboat (keel and everything), and a spaceship? ~ I really like that design!
Also, they look a little bit like elongated fish heads :P

Whether it's too late for you to try out my suggestions or not, i commend what you have so far and look forward to what you have to show in the near future! -- Good luck!

I've fixed the problems in the previous image and added some details. Also i've widen the pic abit. It gave more dept to the composition. It's getting better immo. What should i add or remove? I'm thinking of adding a fighter to the right side firing rockets with smoke. Maybe that way i can improve the depth and dramatic look of the composition. What do you think.

Hi atmospheria,

What an oustanding sense of scale you have !! I also like the green light you add for more drama - the previous pict looks more like postcard compared to this one-.
My two crits would be : as for Speaky, the orientation of ships is too repetitive for me. And I prefer the boats of the previous pict, more traditionnal, more contrasting with the technological fury of the aliens ships.

The pic is a bit too heavy on the left side.. it need something at the bottom right side... also because there need to be something to lead the eye straight to the main interest. Now its empty, somethings missing.
The secon thought I've got.. How big is the main spaceship? I thought that is huuuge and behind the fallen city (and i looove that version!) but I've doubted when I read some posts of other users. Is it in second plan and not so big???

Man, this is looking really beautiful, Atmospheria! Your sense of lighting is just superb! The scale in these images is impressive too. One of my favorite parts of this image is the smoke from the city, because it's well-renderred, and because it helps give some scale to the gargantuan ships. That being said, i have to say that I really agree with Arctis: The big ships are all oriented pretty much the same way, and it feels a bit repetitive. Aside from that, no other comments from me. Good luck with the finishes!

Thanks for the comments! But this time i'm a little bit confused. Everyone says different things, some people likes, some people not. I know the image has some porblems but i'm not going to change the all image again. I'm going to fix the problems immo. As i see from the critics, some people have problems with the scale of the ship. Yes, it's huge and behind the foreground smokes. I've faded the ship a bit but i't not enough i guess. I'm going to fix that as soon as possible. Also i'm going to add an attacking fighter to the right side firing rockets. It'll surely help the composition. Whatelse, going to make some crashed ships. Picture needs some more dramatic elements. I'm going to post the fixes soon. Please post your comments if you have...

looking really good - if it were me, I'd add more contrasting blue or purple, as in your earlier concept sketch. and deepen some areas to red. At the moment, it feels to me like it needs that little extra something - certainly I think entirely orange becomes a bit overpowering. But I love the mood. Also improved since penultimate, with the darker shoreline/buildings and smoke. A real contender :)

Admiration:
I love the work you do and respect your abilities. You have an expert ability with color choice.

Critique:
It seems like your latest composition is inspired by a shot in the clone war battle from Star Wars Episode II. Also, your mothership design, from the green gas image, looks like one half of the ship in the Homeworld game. It just appears that your pieces are reminiscient of past space operas.

Note:
I know you will create an excellent final piece, and I can see you are working hard. I wish you the best!

Concerning the comments and critics, i updated the scene a bit. I added the fighter to the right, enhanced the sky and added some more smoke. I have an idea... just a suggestion... That smoke on the left side is disturbing... It makes a mess. U could put that ship behind the clouds, so its coming out of clouds/mist. U'll get even more dramatic atmosphere and cleat a pic a bit... no need for all those little details which break the pic into many pieces. And a slightly bigger boat at the right bottom will do good for the composition and direction. I hope u understand what do i mean.. :) Everything else is just perfect!

Hey all! Here's a color composition of a hover ship. I just wanted to show you how the ships work. Some people said "these are just ships, there are no technology in it." Well, these ships can hover, but just on the water. Can not fly. I need to limit the technology here. Cause the alien attackers should to be stronger. I love to show the concepts in a composition. These are mostly dramatic. I used a little romantic and luminist style here. Got to love Aivazovsky and Turner! (This picture has no relationship with the main composition. Just wanted to show the ship here.) Anyway..Enjoy!!!

Just wanted to drop a line to tell you how much I respect your work. Your use of colors is awesome, although I think your image is a bit too yellow, specially compared to your last image, which I know, has nothing to do with the composition. I like your designs for hover ships/boats. I wonder, there's a danger that unless it's clear the ship is hovering someone may mistakenly (or foolishly) look at final image and consider was supposed to be on surface, but badly placed. It's possible. I think you'd have to make clear boat is hovering eg obvious gap, or consequent ripples on surface of lake/sea from its hoverdrive... may not be necessary, but questions of interpretation can carry an idea one artist portrays far far away fron where he originally intended (for good or for bad...).

I wanted to suggest researching the rules of perspective of looking at cones above the horizon line, here's a suggestion, take a carrot and place the thick base in front of your face (just like your ships there) and tilt the carrot (top part, pointy part) away from your face but don't move the base just tilt it away from your face, the effect of the tile is missing from your drawings. You should draw the carrot tilted away from you but you draw it , pretty much, straight up and down as if the ships were........ small. Another way is to look at the rings on the carrot look under the carrot and look down on the carrot, how does the circles on the carrot CHANGE ? I can't paint no where as good as you, yet. I'm learning how to paint sea-water from your boat painting. Look at how Feng Zhu draws he always start with a grid this is how i was able to learn this (from disney guys), the grid is ALL. The horizon line is GOD. Everything above the horizon line is being looked UP at. Draw, cones with formfitting hoola hoops, above the horizon line, and below, in two point perspective, the hoola hoops have to obey perspective. If i was better at computers i would draw an example. Good job overall, i only hope to be able to paint as well as yourself some day. :)
P.S. it's the right wing of the ships, you have to be looking under the wing and it should be a tad higher, also notice how the perspective doesn't change for the smaller ship which is higher up from the ground... we should be seeing more of the base if the smaller ship.

P.S. again If my suggestions slow you down please ignore them, these are ment to help.

I love those ship designs. I was just thinking though, I think the values of the close ships in the bottom left hand corner are a little too similar? They seem to have a kind of atmospheric haze on them that kinda messes with the scale of everything else in the piece. I think they should have the same contrast as the purple ship on the right.

It looks really good! :)

I really love the colors and the lighting on that large ship. The design is really fun, and different than what we normally see. The only thing I'm not sure about is the blue things up at the top. They distract me for some reason, and maybe if they weren't in an arcing line, and some were closer to the middle of the picture it would draw the viewer's eye to the action. Good work nonetheless!

Hi again,
Here's another wip. I've more concentrated on the sea and smoke this time and added some more detials on the ship. There are still many more things to do. I've removed some of the ships on the sea but i'm going to put them back. Also i'm thinking something different for the sky. More moody and atmospheric than a dark and cloudy sky. This is going to make the painting more "daramtic". Like " a beautiful sunset and invasion of the outsiders." You gonna see it on the next wip. Take care until then.

ecura
12-27-2004, 09:29 AM
With the blend of orange values with sky and spaceship does look draw the image a little bit flat, however I guess its going to look quiet intense and show more depth with the darker clouds. Good move, looking forward to see the progress.

The quality of the concept sketches and your latest update to your image is outstanding.. You have created so many sketches (that rivals any finished artwork) and so many ideas that you made this look easy! I browsed thru 15 pages to see your updates and sketches (couldn't read all the posts tho sorry!)

There's one little thing that I think would improve the image, tho I feel almost guilty for thinking in this way(!): The waves could be smaller and could contain more sub-waves for finer detail, in this current situation, everything near the sea looks smaller than it actually is. Of course nothing can even touch that big big huge mothership, the feeling of mass is excellent, it is not even merely affected adversely by the seemingly huge waves (with no sub waves on them :) )

I like the image so much that I feel abnormal when I think I found sth that could improve it :)

The next color wip. I totally changed the sky. It's more promising now.( I guess)Wanted it to be more dramatic and in a romantic style. There are still lots to do. I'm gonna add the fight scene at the end. A huge fight! and some bombs falling at the back perhaps. This is it for now...enjoy

Oh boy, oh boy...looks to me like we are looking at one of the winners, for sure!

Emrah, your work is astounding, I really mean it. The sky looks awesome, superb, fantastic...The spaceships really seem to be coming forward now. And that blueish part to the right really works well.

You added a spacehip below, but you can hardly make it out, behind the seawaves. Perhaps you should light it a bit more from above.

(really love that sky)

One other suggestion would be to overlap one of the smaller fighters (or whatever they are; I mean the small ones in the middle) in front of the big spaceship. I think the viewer needs a reference to know where the fighter is exactly.

I think the image looks better without the "firedrops". They distracted too much and you didn't really know where they were coming from.

Beautiful!

I love your painting style...its very reminiscent of the old landscape painters. The only thing that I can see is that your composition is still somewhat very monochromatic. Yes, I do see the application of the subtle hints of the muted/lesser hues, but who knows what kind of an anchor colors on the other end of the spectrum could ad to your visual. Colors that are decisively cooler, always intensify warmer/hotter colors (This is just a suggestion...I love your work). Awesome work...very cinematic.

oh my god your work is beutiful!

I can't say anything bad about it.
Well if I have to say something "bad" the "sailingship" craft (bottomleft corner) was better in earlier versions, but this new one is almost as good.

It seems to be very uneven fight and I feel bad for those guys in the boats. But as always "Grand space opera" wouldn't be a "Grand space opera" without uneven odds and miraculous victories over evil and tyranny.

Great storytelling moment in this one! GL!

It's probably too late at this point, but my only suggestion would be to move one of the left-most ships over some. Right now they are practically on the same verticle, which is excentuated further by the purple virticle beams. I'm only nitpicking, though :)

I want to say big thanks to everyone who helped me and supported me through the process. If you can support me in the finals i'll be very appreciated!
