Usually, I'm inspired as soon as I hear a story or briefing. A pretty clear image pops infront of my invisible eye and won't let go until I copied it onto a sheet of paper. But then, there are times as these, when no inspiration whatsoever comes up and even watching my favourite artists works won't rise a slight motivation in me. Well, this time is now. Whatever I do, it all feels like crap und I'm very unsatisfied. So I keep on doodling and wait for the muse ...

still fishing for ideas and waiting for a hit from the muse ...

no news yet. I thought I might go with something more emotional ... I try to get that mouth right.
btw: all sketches are done with copic marker and pencil on ordinary copy paper.

I thought I could get closer to my intention if I create a color sample. Well, I failed. Better I try somthing else ...

Wow, these are great, you've got a lot of ideas flowing. I love the color sample, I wish I had your handle on color. Maybe try changing up the aspect ratio, do something a little wider. Great start though!

Hey, just keep doodling. Maybe try something so completely off the wall...nah, i won't finish the thought. It can only end in terror. eh.

The terror has already started, long ago.

I can't believe you think that's a failure. It's one of my favs that I've seen in this competition. Very cool. Feels like it could be a book cover or movie poster, gives me that "Space Opera feeling" ;).

I agree, the last image is very strong. Love the colors, as well as the imagery. It took me a second to see that those are ships veering away from the dragon/wormhole thing. What if you took one of those ships and made its trail a little more angled, as if it came from right below the camera. This way it would lead the eye to the focal point of the composition. Just a thought,
Neal

I'm aiming for emotion and dynamic, so I felt happy coming up with this idea after all. This is actually the irst one I like. But I think I'll keep on searching for a better image.

Hi there =)
Would you mind making the line art slightly darker? Right now it contrasts too little with the background, so it is difficult to see you art

This picture will include an iconic but dynamic and emotional composition, a hero, heavy machinery (a giant war-robot), spacecrafts and lots of effort and time. What's it all about?
A single man, (the hero up front) brings a galactic war to an end. using the huge giant warmachine which is connected to his synaptic nerve system and therefore controled solemly by his mental force and body movements. This is going to be fun!

I thought I could get closer to my intention if I create a color sample. Well, I failed. Better I try somthing else ...Typical artist- way too hard on yourself. :banghead:
That big creature in space is awesome- so is the first robot/war machine one- it's really smart to stay loose like that right now. Have some fun with that war machine if you go with that!

Since idea and composition is settled, I can concentrate now on designing the picture constituent parts.
I start with the giant war-robot. First, I blow up the small tumbnail color study in A4 size and print it as referenze. Using a light table and a blank paper, I trace whatever shows through and seems interesting enough. My desktop lamp is a great help there, since I can "ajust" the paper's transparency easily the more I light it from the top.

I'm still not happy with the robot design. I want it to be less humanoid and more machine like. And it has to appear heavier and more monstrous. Btw: I this is a trace as well. I think by tracing the last image, I can take what I like and discard what I don't. I guess this will need some more traces until I come to a final draft.
NOOB!

u can make it less humannoid by exxagerating its features,or not using human anatomy.
