It could have been another normal day.
Until the alarm bells in the space center began to ring.
No one had expected Day "X" so soon.
In the past years the sun had begun to grow. And everybody knew the end would be near. Therefore space ships had been constructed to escape in case the last day would arrive.
Two hours after the alarm in the center the ships where already in space and behind them was there home shattered into peaces and dust. Only a gigantic red glow reminded now of the world that had been the home for everybody for the past billions of years.
There was no turning back now.
They had to go into the big unknown to find a new home ...
Maybe a friendly alien species...
Maybe even the Earth...
...

I visited the Nasa site and I was really surprised. It's one of the most interesting and best made sites I've ever seen.
So check it out:

Here are some nice pics just for the fun of it:
a sunstorm

a supernova

a nebula

That's all I wanted to say.
Good luck to everyone :D :D

Oh wow, if you make the scene as good as the photos from NASA it'll be a great one!!! Keep it up, and post modeling soon, can't wait to see it!

Try playing with the perspective on the fleeing ships. It might look good if one ship is flying up close and past the camera (filling a quarter of the image) and the rest of the fleet crowding round and getting smaller and smaller into the distance towards the red glow of the remnants.
I think this would make it look more epic. Cool idea - hope you make the most of it.

good idea and really epic..
i think you should change the title.. the collapse of the sun is a long process and they knew exactly that it shall happen.. so total displacement of the whole civilization most probably reminds "Exodus" or something like this.. and it sounds more epic too..
and i agree with simoncvy about fleet positioning..
a cool idea anyway.. and good luck..

Thx, for ya comments...
I kept them in mind and made another fast sketch...
I am currently collecting Ideas for the shipdesign, but hey there's still plenty of time left.
Keep on rockin' everybody! :D

Perhaps the near ship flying below the camera would be more effective...
Thanks for the pictures and for reminding me about the NASA site. I'll need some nebula reference for mine.

looks good so far, but I think the image is a little off balance with the 2 heaviest/closest looking ship BOTH on the left side of the image. Try swapping the bottom one with the med size ship on the far right
