Help please..

I am looking to buy a Gfx card (in US) which can playback realtime (would really help me) and not skip frames when I animate multiple characters or a character with mesh smooth on..

Currently I have in mind:
> Gainward FX 5900 XT golden sample or other make
> FX 5900
> Quadro 700 (If in budget)
> ANything else you suggest..

I mainly use Max and Maya..
My budget is max. US $300 (assembling a new system!)
My system is p4 3.0, 1.5 GB Ram, Intel GBF865 currently using a FX5200

Please provide links to the retailers you quote..

Thanks a Gazzillion

i would go with a high end gaming card before i bought a low end pro card... but either way, you're probably going to be disapointed. playing back animation of multiple high poly characters depends less on your video card and much more on your cpu, and from my experience, probably just isn't going to happen. sure you need to be able to push a lot of polys to do it, and that is using your card, but if you can already navigate around your scene with a good framerate while no animation is playing, a better card probably won't improve things too much, you should just use low poly proxy objects, and playblasts to get realtime feedback.

Thanks Vertizor and jbo..

That is what I feared..I think in terms of navigation in viewport I am pretty content with FX5200..but when I play animation (almost low poly characters) it kinda skips..too much..I have 8000 polys right now..

Maybe it is'nt possible to play too many high poly characters realtime..but which card do you guys think would be better (in comparision) for the job of playing 9-12K polys realtime?

dont think you will find a 6800gt for $300 not for a while. 5900xt is good card for around $200 the 6800 (vanilla) can be had for around $300 and it serves me well in xsi and lightwave. Was on sale at frys/outpost for around $250 a few days ago. Not sure if that changed, but you can check.

edit- real time at that level is not too possible with just a new card. Depends on your app of course, motionbuilder could get close.

Bfg seems like a good choice lifetime warranty and 24-7 technical support. These are the reasons I bought the bfg 6800. But, after reading those reviews it might be a hassle several people had doa boards. Seems like thay had bad ram in some, I would think twice about this card after reading those reviews. Maybe call bfg directly and ask why so many of these boards were doa, they might have made a change since these reviews.

when using max, a quadro 900 or 1100 will kill the geforce 5900.

i'm not at all sure that's true... as far as speed goes(cause that's mainly what we're talking about here), i think the 5900 would be faster (and i know it certainly wouldn't be "killed"). the quadro does have its other advantages though.

of course i'm talking about speed. and i say it again, a quadro 900 with maxtreme will even outperform a geforce 6 card by far.

Can you show anything to back this up?

Thanks for the replies and help guys! :)

I am going with BFG FX 5900 or Gainward FX5900XT (I think best in my budget)..I hope it'll playback 8-10 K polys without skipping..

So I am out of here, before the.. quadro, non-quadro..softquadro..unquadro..super quadro things begin... :D

it will easily playback 8-10k polys without skipping...WHILE YOU AREN'T PLAYING ANIMATION... I'm telling you... the video card is not the problem here. if anything will help, it's a faster cpu. The cpu is doing most of the work when meshes are being deformed... The graphics card is just drawing the polys on screen like normal. don't expect some magical fix here cause you're upgrading the wrong componant. what cpu do you have btw?

and yeah, i'd really like to see some documentation for those claims plastic

It's a p4 2.6 (upgrading to 3.0 now)...As for graphics card..Hopefully it should help a bit..otherway, it should be more fun playing games atleast..

I bought me a BFG 6800 for 300, and it works great, and has 2 blue LED fans on it! 300 dollars for blue fans is SO worth it!

Also, I completly agree with jbo, if you wanna speed up the playback of your animations, your cpu will impact playback much more than a video card, unless ofcourse you decide to use massive amounts of realtime shaders and effects.
