Hi. I’ve been working on this image that I call “The Gift”. I am trying to evoke a feeling of mystery through lighting, scale and mood. I would appreciate comments and criticisms on this piece and on the theme and direction also. Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

I like the texturing and lighting, but, umm... What is it?

well, um, this is still kinda 'surrealistic'.
maybe some more detail to the ground or background would help to sharpen it out.
the texture of the 'potatoe' seems very tiled, maybe some more work on it would help....

the texture on the sweet spud isn't quite right....it needs to be a little more brown and less "Eyes"
here's a reference pic for you :)

Thanks for the comments guys. Uzuiel thanks for posting the ref. The reference I used was actually a "garnet yam"...hence the odd pinkish color. I reworked the color from your ref, used some DOF and added a second yam. As you can see, I am going for a more stylized surreal look rather that correctly photo-real. I really don't know how it comes across. obviously the modelling is very basic, I'm trying to let the softness of the lighting and the simplicity and "strangeness carry the scene. Is it working at all? Thanks for the help!

I would work more on the ground texture now. I notice you have a box kinda thing going on. How about instead of a box, you go with an unfolded burlap sack? Or maybe a freshly dug earth texture? Like something dug up from the garden? I'm not getting what mood you're going for, but "the gift" would indicate something precious, and perhaps a present. Maybe even a piece of purple felt that they use to display jewelry might be nice. If you are adamant on a box, I would suggest and old weathered beat up wood texture.

And to honest I thought your first material on the "yam" was better. You could still tell what it was, but more mysterious. It almost reminded me of a radish a little bit, yeah. But the pink tone really works in the image I think.

Very curious to see your completed project, looking good so far.

Here is a revised image after some thought about the suggestions. Always the trouble with this is that the original direction sometimes gets lost in th translation. In this case, I am happy with the new direction, it lost some of the soft mystery of the original, but gained a rather organic complexity. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!
