I am lost for words, great renderings. I can't wait to see what your composition will be like.

What do you plan on doing?

unitstudio
10-23-2004, 04:09 AM
Wow, what an entrance you've made there. Great concepts and execution. I particularly like the first of ther two - it has a monolithic sense of scale that's somewhat lacking with the 2nd. Also it resembles in my mind a Spanish galleon - there a strong nautical elements which work particularly well.

nice!

That ship on top is one of my favoritest designs of all time! Probably has to do with the fact that it looks a little like a train (I love trains). But you've made it more unique than this little mind of mine can fathom. Geez, I'm biased now. Hope you go all the way, Andrew.

Serious sketching skills... if your sketches are this good youre gonna kill it with your final illustration.

ViDA

Thank you all for a warm welcome ! These were sketched on paper then refined on photoshop.

My goal is to present a futuristic cityscape with a spectacular brand new ship departure gone horribly wrong. So in the course of this competition you will see concepts of small ships , ground vehicles , concepts of buildings etc.

Mr. Glass (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=108132) : No man , self tought. Im afaraid that it would be impossible for me to attend a serious US industrial design school (Im in Canada ) as it bears an impossible financial burden .

Holy cow!!! That's an amazing sketch. You got some good values to give it a good 3d feel!

WeevilMan
10-23-2004, 08:34 AM
really inspirational work there. i think what works for me is the sense of weight, as though the cylindrical areas on the side are honestly holding the entire craft upright. theres a great sense of depth to the design also, the details within the carapace giving it the sense of reality it needs.
the second craft to me seems a little too boxy, almost piecemealed together. if that is the sense you are going for, then kudos. i sometimes find that gives a very human impression.
Enough of my baseless ramblings, well done!

fantastic visualisation, best of luck on the project :D

Absolutely incredible ship designs!! I love that fisrt concept... the tonal values are so bang on.

And it does have a 'train' look to it... mixed with a oil tanker... or something. WHo knows?? Except it's one of the best ship consepts i've see in this challenge.

The new concept is great too... love 'em...

The idea for the final image sounds pretty spectacular... And if it's filled with design of this quality i can't wait to see it all fleshed out!! Gonna keep a real close watch on this thread!!

Thanks guys , these sketches take about from an hour to 2-3 , on and off from the blank sheet of paper to the digital image.

The final image is going to be tricky . This is what I have in mind :

There are 2 civilisations on this planet . One is on the elevated surface / in the sky (Airtonians) , and another one is underwater (Divesians) . Due to the wast differences of these 2 they were never in good relations with each other. The most sacred possesions of Divesians are the technology and their ships which they have kept secret for many generations .Somehow Airtonians got a hold of an old vessel that they discovered deep underground during a contruction of the foundation for a new city.

The vessel that is going to be presented hovering above the Airtonian city is an effort to reproduce the technology of Divesians. But what they dont know is that an entire Divesian fleet is sitting duck underwater , waiting for the right moment to spoil the party.

Beautifully executed concepts and designs there vida, despite some of the 'escheresque' elements to the nose area of the divesion fighter concept - some of the forms don't make sense. Individually too, most of the elements and details are very interesting and clearly well-thought out but I'm not sure the design works as a totality - the silouhette for example doesn't at all read well.
The rest of your designs are far more successful, they're awesome even, not least your latest. I'm interested in knowing how these pieces will work in a composition but I'm sure you're getting to that. A strong contender here.

good luck and keep up the inspiring work

Lol if those are just sketches... great stuff. I'm jealous of your technical design abilities. The most recent one is my favorite because of the consistent design. The sunken areas have a socketed, ball joint feel to them that I really like with some almost train like elements on the main body.

Ouch wow , thanks alot guys , I didnt expect to have such a wonderfull response .

unitstudio (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=80411): I can see how that would be a problem but hear me out :
For the form I combined a snail / and a retro soviet ww2 figher look . Combined with a cold feel of a submarine I hoped that it would make it stand out , make it much more solid .
I might rework the front , and add a curvy tail structure . Thanks for commenting on that.

Beautiful concept, the designs are quite reminiscent of Frank Gehry. Vida it's progressing well - the only issue with the composition that I can see is that it could do with being more panoranic.

Re the fighter - no problem - like any responses here it's purely an expression of personal taste - that in no way is a criticism of your obvious talent - I merely felt that it was the least successful of the designs you presented for the reason I'd outlined. It's all top-notch conceptual design however and I look forward to watching this evolve.

great stuff!

This is a divesian ship designed destroy huge amounts of water around it.
The energy field expands around 1000 meters in diameter in a spherical manner . After that the water is annihilated creating a vaccum space .The surface above the explosion drops down creating a huge tidal wave.

*picking up my eyes from the floor*...ummm wow! truly amazing - your best thus far ViDA. An incredible design (interesting areas of detail and clear silouhette, simple and clean overall lines etc etc) I presume it's some kind of droid. the body reminds me of the robot out of lost in space - ok that film was god awful, but the robot did look cool, and so does this.

I'm very envious of your rendering technique i must say - do you lay down a marker layer before bringing it into photoshop or are these entirely photoshop pieces?

beautiful work and interesting designs.

Hey guys , this was done a while ago , but I thought that an overal approach to airtonian technology would be quite the same : big wings , big spaces , huge open structure engines etc.

To answer your questions:

I usually work on paper , sketching it roughly with ball pen or prismacolor 30% cool grey. Then I ether color it mith markers to the max or move on to computer right away. After that its dodge/ burn , brushes and airbrushes with various modes. You may have seen my non-concept related work , its all about details.
About the composition , Im thinking ether a low perspective where the observer is standing in the middle of the explosion caused by the Divesian detonator . I think that a scene of a huge circular water drop with a city on a horison would be quite dramatic.

ViDA, oh yes that's working for me! Kind of has a matrix / aquanox / hardwar feel to it which is no bad thing. I'm finding myself wanting something to break up the greeny yellow palette a bit, maybe some complementary reddy blues somewhere. It's very very good, though!

Wow, Vida your work is amazing! I have seen many, many 3d renders that do not have the balance, grace, and skill of your 2d concepts. My bets are currently on you for an award.

Thanks guys for feedback.

This is a ship that has been created by Airtonians with the help of the Divesian technology , hope you guys like it . Im going to submit the linear and landscape renderings later on : ).

Amazing sketch man :p
this one is better than the precedent I think... the texture metallic is lest shinny and it looks better to me :) good one the style is great to... little wings...

Damn just realised I made a stupid perspective error , apologies .
I would apprituate any feedback on this design. Thanks.

Greatness. The chrome texture on this ship reminds me of old american bombers like
the B-17. I want to see this baby integrated in a complete environment.

:)

WOW! Nice job on the metal finish! :)

I didn't notice the perspective error, but it is a concept so mistakes are ok, and welcomed.

Great progress, keep it up.

So where's the perspective error?
I especially dig the reflecitons on the main wing, but you asked for feedback on the ships design and I must say I think those main wings are desturbing. It's not like those keep the craft from falling anyway... I mean, it's massive. I'd try to make them shorter or to mirror them, because the front of the ship is the heaviest.

Simply astonishing! Self tought ? And I thought of myself as a one for regularly skipping

P.S. just kidding offcourse - Canada is too cold for me :)

Ganthu : Its not so bad here : ). Thanks , glad you liked it.

Techart: Just alot of research and sketching. Practice makes perfect.

CocoKnight: Thanks for the feedback , I might change it but I think Ill stick with the size .
I figured a huge wings tilted downwards alittle bit would give it mass and weight like no other element.

Thank you for your kind responses , I will try to answer your questions on a regular basis.

Andrew.

Color correction , minor one.

Warning colors abit extreme , I just wondered if I would give it a cool texture , like a beetle armor.

To answer your question , no I have not gone to any school , self tought .

Nice one too this one!!!Maybe it could be cool if the backwings were up and those turbines just under them.Inversing them.
This could give more dynamic felling to the ship...
But that's just an subjective suggestion...
Nice colors!!

I really like the chrome effect you had going a few images back. The effect was lost when you tried to bring up the level of detail I think. Look at old WWII bombers with their aluminum skin (pre-paint-job, obviously) and see what I mean. If you get close to those planes, there are tons of rivets and seams and all sorts of things to pay attention to. Just a suggestion (aerodynamically speaking, it makes sense to see fewer details too).

Another thing I'd watch out for is the brightness you're working at right now. With chrome, softer lighting really makes the reflections look better. Harsher lighting is better for situations where you need it to pick up the details that a shinier material can do with less light.

I say this because I love what you've got going so far and I really think the vehicle rocks! They are only suggestions from somebody who couldn't do this well already anyway

Vehicle = the awesome!

Now to make it sit nicely into some sort of scene that communicates "epic" and you've got a sure winner!

I really like the colour contrast´s in the scene. Maybe you could add some weapon detail´s under the ship? To give the bottom more technical detail.
