derwolpertinger 08-19-2002, 08:28 PM hey, i finally managed to start on my first comic character ever! :) the head is almost finished by now. maybe, i'll change some proportions on the head to increase the funny look of this guy. i think that i have to simplify the eye shader, too. then i'll start on the body. don't have much ideas for it yet. hmm....what about an astronaut suit, i'll think over it and make some sketches to see what's cool. finally i hope to get my hands on an animation with this guy. some facial animation and other...
so what do you think so far?

hey thx for the c&c!
...and matty, that was a cool suggestion there, to divide the head kinda in two spheres, i'll see if i can twist the head to this form. :)

here's an update guys! i reshaped the head and the snork like things on it. and i made some changes on the eye shader. i thought that it looked too realistic for a comic guy. then i shaped out the body. i think that i'll give this guy some suit tomorrow. maybe also a vehicle that floats over the ground. ...ahh and a nice little toygun-lookin gun forsure. :) hey gotta say that's really fun to model.

the mouth looks like a small indent, like it has no depth... kinda like a landing bay... it needs to be darker more cartoony
but nice otherwise:thumbsup:

;)

Like the look of the guy. I would suggest exaggerating his facial features a bit, as the rest of his head is already so. Maybe the mouth has super big lips or something. Good work so far.

-->verti: glad you can see at least! :) but to your question: unfortunately i am not a xl 8 beta tester. :(
-->fxgogo: hmm what do you mean exactly? make some facial expressions? if so i'll make them when the whole character is done. as for th lips. i had these lips in mind cause i want to keep it simple but i'll make some tests on huge fat lips now. maybe it' even better, :)
as always thx for your c&c 1

well i've worked on the head and the arms and also changed the lips(well, at least i have added some :p ). but i'm not sure if it looks better this way or with the former lips. what do you think?

hey there's no change on the character in this image. the last hours i spent on trying to create a realistic candlelight. so i just integrated it into the scene. :)

hey! your character is turning out really good! cant wait to see it animated!!!
are you going to do ca in xl 7 or already in xl8?
maybe lips need some tuning... but it looks better with them!
cool candle :)
wish you luck with this! keep up the good work!

yeah i don't like the lips yet, too. gotta do some finetuning on them. as for the animation i'll wait till r 8 is out. cause it'll be much simpler then. :)

and another one :)
i've refined the upper body and the legs and added the spacy belt. i think i'll make the soles of the shoes thicker and more uneven-looks off right now. but what me bothers the most is the part on the head from the eyes downwards. it just doesn't look good. well, i have to see what i can do about that. maybe also lifting up the mouth a bit, i dunno yet. got some suggestions?

Maybe some dreadlocks and a spliff.......then he would be cool!
He looks cool, animate him!

finally got him rigged now! :) but there are still a few annoying distortions, i'll see if i can fix them somehow. btw. i worked with vertex maps assigned to the specific bones with restriction tags. i also gotta say that i have never ever animated anything before cause i first wanted to get familiar with modelling and texturing, so this is going to be my premiere. i've done a couple o' rigs already but only for posing not for animation. got one question for now. the teeth are several seperate objects grouped in a null object. how do you guys animate them with mouth that is part of the alien? my intention is to make some morph targets on the head for several facial expressions.

and here's the model at a different angle and lighting:

Thats cool
I think the face problem you are speaking of is in that the jaw does not seem to connect to the skull properly. As I found out the hard way even comic characters have to follow basic human anatomy to look right, but apart from that you have an excellent character there derwolpertinger

<-----too impressed with the guy to give an intelligeant comment derwolpertinger.
I'm very much enjoying following your progress here, though :D

hey don't think i stopped workin on that fella here! :) i'm just creating several facial expressions at the moment. i can tell you that's pretty damn hard when you never did stuff like that before. well, at least hard for me. :D
....something different, i saw a tut on how to create a plasticene shader in max. then, as always, i tried to recreate it in c4d. i then applied it to this model and created a wallpaper just for me. you can use it, of course but it's not very good. just a render and some quick PS work. anyway, i just wanted to show you the plasticene shader this way. in case you like it just tell me and i'll do a step by step tut. :)
attention modem users, the file is about 230 k:

woohoo, finally got some facial expressions captured!:bounce:
so here they are. i linked the file cause it is about 110 k. i dunno if i should post pics of this size right here. tell me plz. i just thought of you poor modem surfers. :(
so what do you think?(plz no comments on PS compositing, it is 5 am here and i am damn tired, so no time for supercompositing here. :))
-->expressions this way plz!--> (http://www.derwolpertinger.de/cgpics/xpressions.jpg)
The one after the figure 8 mouth looks kinda strange to me, its hard to tell with th colors, but it appears that half the chin is missing or something. Otherwise the expressions are great just like your model. But of course you already knew that :)

hi again! (almost feel like a spammer here :D) i just created some other facial expressions. it is so much fun to give this guy some expressions. :)
btw. most of the other expressions can be seen when you follow the link in my last post just in case you missed them.
http://www.derwolpertinger.de/cgpics/xpressions2.jpg
...now i'll have to wait till R8 for the animation. :(
wait till R8?
Well... okay , but you better give us a good mocca tutorial as a result :D
