Testing different shapes of the face. got sick of the last one, just wasn't working for me. I like this though.

Alright, so my first of first!
What we have here is the moment of both defeat and victory that we've stood witness to in so many great epics. The figure on the mid right standing is of course the conqueror, while the pathetic hump of a once great leader grovels to the right of him. I'm thinking of having a ripped apart cloak on the defeated and then on the left side of the screen, much closer to us, having a part of the cloak piece dangling from a corner of a nearby instrument panel, as though it was ripped there during a battle. And beside it will also be an elegant blood splatter. Anyways, more roughs to come, it's just a big rough up in my noggin anyways.

There on the left is the cape piece. Also, I placed them in a obviously rough setting. They are standing on a very thin platform that's hovering over a humongous command room, from which they are gazing out upon a fleet that is about to destroy either another fleet, or an unfortunate planet...nyah, what you gonna do *shrugs*...

A little more for feeling.

I'm trying to feel the placement, but am not doing a good job expressing it on the thumbs. I'll try further tomorrow. I'm going for something moody sad... yes, mooody sad.

10-25-2004, 04:16 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4591/4591_1098677790_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4591/4591_1098677790_large.jpg)

I don't know... I'm feeling this in my head, but on paper it's just not coming together. I'm imagining a strong widescreen shot, more wide creen then the one I got here. I want the figures to be a central point in the pic but it's just very difficult since they are so small and away from the vanishing point. I was thinking of using the exhaust light from the space ship on the right, to illuminate very obvious silhouets of the two souls.
I'm not sure how it'll turn out. I might try to render iit just for the kicks.
It's a pain painting with a mouse though, no, I mean literally.

Sorry for the sketch quality, but it is a sketch!

10-25-2004, 12:17 PM
Hey Rasdasa, like the last sketch a lot.... Good luck!

Mysterious X
10-25-2004, 01:21 PM
Rasdasa, i saw every single sketch you made in the daily sketch group here..and i tell you from now...you got my vote !!

10-25-2004, 04:48 PM
I like this last sketch a lot too Rasdasa! Keep on going, you may not be feeling it, but the scale of it speaks to me. I like it!

10-25-2004, 07:52 PM
DM and Robin: Thanks for the votes of confidence, it's nice to hear, I just wish it could speak to me! I'll keep working on it. I've got some others I'll post later.

Mysterious X: Don't do that! It'll throw off the delicate balance of things, only vote for me
when you feel it in your bowels:love::D
Thanks for the kind words though, it's wiered to have an admirer.

These sketches are of a race come head to head with an omnipotent entity of some sort. He holds them in his hand like they are miniture toys...

10-26-2004, 03:34 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4591/4591_1098761674_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4591/4591_1098761674_large.jpg)

The idea behind this one is that the omnipotent entity is swallowing up the great heroes and villains of our time, both fictional and real. So there would be little figures of anyone from Hulk, Gandhi, Hitler, Superman, Darth Vader, blah blah blah. Ther reason I like this one is because it'll be more inclusive for community feedback. This way I can get input for who to choose to render as figures being consumed. kind of like a vote off, or such.
The reason I don't like it, aside from having to render a mini figure of hitler, is that it seem pretty freaking impossible for some of the characters, since I wan't them so small, to actualy depict who they are. Maybe a summerization of iconic colours to represent what they stood for. So the colour of Superman will give away immediatly that it's superman, seems harder with gandhi though. I guess his oversized head might help...
Also, it's sort of corney to have Hitler and Spiderman in the same picture. Reminds me of some sort of government sponsored WW2 comic book. Except of course Spider-man wasn't out by then... anyways..
ehem...no, you shut up.

Same sort of idea as the last two, except really wide screen... I like this one. It would be surreal, and I could do so much cool rendering on the freak-of-a-god's body.

Here is another meeting, except now the ships of some distant civilication have come accross a four eyed(or 8 head on) entity... ooo, scarrryyy.. Frankly, I like it.

12-03-2004, 08:04 PM
Rasdasa, it's a month without new concept sketches and now I'm sending out a search party. I like the widescreen omnipotent god creature best so far. Mini Hulk and Hitlers wouldn't work, as we're supposed to come up with an entirely new set of characters. Maybe Mini Hunk and Shitler, but. . .:)
Anyway, the god creature reminds me of the starchild from 2001, now all grown up and ready to shed enlightenment on some lucky planet. And he's cute, too! :)

12-04-2004, 01:48 AM
Thank you likesoup, I've been doing sketches and such but School and co-op combined equal a HARSH HARSH mistress. I'm planning to add alot more starting next week, when I finally go on christmas vacation. I'm not sure about the swallowing deity since he doesn't seem quite immense enough if I have to render the figures he is swallowing discernably. I have a few others I'm going to post. I appreciate you taking the time though, but don't worry I'm not out, just absolutly swamped. Guess what I'm going to go do knoww... that's right, more homework. Perspective(angled reflections) to be exact.

I'll be posting soon, peace out!

HA! Schools out and 'm back. Now to sit down and bite into it.
One of two I'm thinking about.
This expands on my idea of a greater entity swallowing a civilization one individual at a time.

Here is the other one I am considering. It's a rpofile view of the civilization coming accross an enigmatic deity...oooo
Hell, I like this one alot, I think i';; do this one first, and then the other one if there is time.

OOoooh yeah baby, feels so good to get back into this! Alright, I'm playing with some color variation. Ignore the color of the back head/hornes/hair/excrements...whatever! I'm more focused on the body color. This blue seems alright, I might go for darker, depends on the weight of the background. Seeing as how it is space, it'll probably be very dark/black, so i don't want his whole body to make too much impact, it'll be harder to bring attention to the details, and it might actualy overwhelm them...hmmm, I'll see. Now that I've got my concept down, I can go check out the other threads. Promised myself I'd refrain from doing so until now, just so it wouldn't influence my thought proccess... nyah, makes sense on paper.

12-16-2004, 04:06 PM
more to come! Too tired right now... color variations limitless... head blurring out... (rasdasa wobbles in colored stuppor) Pink appears around him...snorrrr.

So far this is my favourite one. I\\\\\\\'m hoping to outline it with lighter strands of sinew, to better express the muscle composition. only problem is that I was hoping to add some dark violetBlue to the space, and if i do so he might blend a little too much with it... It might work to my benefit but maybe not... *shrug*

This is my second favourit, and it\'s a VERY close second...
I like the raw energy of the hue, but it might contrast too much with energy of the space debree/nebula/planets/suns/ETC, that I\'m hoping to whip in...

Nyah... sort of subdued... and lame... but puke gold! You know, god like. I tried for a gold-gold but it was much too intense for the background.

Sweet sulptry purple... caresser of bodices and arched backs. You seductor of fine linen and even finer physics...no.

Nice start.... like your sketching style. waiting for more updates.

K, I\'ve decided either on the blue...

Put some lines on him to give form, obviously.

...and this dark red. The blue speaks more to me, but it would be the typical color of choice, but the red has a sort of impactual statement.... like...hey, I'm red...Sort of like satan, except what F*@& am I?!

12-18-2004, 07:00 PM
Another interesting thread.. all those colors hmmm.... the red one is too much human-like, just without skin, so there could be some missunderstandings with the scale. So Im for the blue one at this moment. Or maybe white or black. That would be somehow logically coz in space u dont need any color at all... so it would give more reality feeling to that character... or maybe not :D What the hack do I know... just thinking and writing everything down. Maybe it would help :) Good luck!

12-18-2004, 07:16 PM
Thanks ninja, I appreciate the Crits. I'm feeling the same as you, Blue seems the most appealing. i tried black and white but it just melded in way too much with the background. I was more than just his size and outline to grab attention. Tough choices *grin*

http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4591/4591_1103493534_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4591/4591_1103493534_large.jpg)

Quick block-in to see the composition. The spaceships will be almost nestled within the fat grasp. Bigger ones, smaller ones, they'll be lots of one's.
I'll have to throw in a neubla on the bottom right to give some balance... never done a nebula before... nyah *shrug* let's see what happens. I think I'll attempt one without refrence first, to see if i can give it a stylistic feel, and then when I realize how stupid an idea that really is I'll get me-self some refrence... but for now I fly solo!
In other news, I've been playing with some displacement maps through Zbrush and Maya. That's right, I've whored up on the Z-waggon, and so far I'm really sucking it up(screwing up, I mean). I can render the test runs that you get off the sites, but when i attempt to build my own test and detail it, all I end up testing is my bloody patience! Well, that and the strength of scalp...
Anyways, be back soon.

Alright, so i did some work in the last couple of days. First some color eye tests.

Purple Nurple. More demanding, more ...enigmatic.

Had to stop cropping in, I wasn\\\'t getting the full impact of the eyes like that. It might seem pointless to some, but the eyes are usualy a very important centre of balance, conviction, and relation between observer and subject.
Atleast that\\\'s how I feel.

Mmmmm, yup. And the trivialties don\'t end here either.

Wow, there is a much stronger impact now that i've zoomed out. So far thwe ark violet carries the most promise, but we'll see. The green is ugly, but I need to share the ugly with the not so ugly.

12-22-2004, 04:42 PM

Just to see how the complimentary color of blue would stack... nah, pleaseing, but too contrived. besides, I don't want too pleasing.

Finaly, just working a bit with value of thee violet. I think I might go with that, but am just not sure even now.

K, so I then went on to hair/hornes/headpieces/excrements... whatever the heck you want to call it!. Did a few different styles of course. But these appealed to me the most.

I liked this one. Looked even less like goldie locks.

Expanded on it. I like the fact that the horn/hair is disjointed and disconnected, but flows in union. Almost seems to represent the instability of the omnipotent deity. Sort of like, if you were close enough you wouldn't even realize that those were some sort of body parts but when you zoom out and take in the whole picture, as we are, then it smack you in the gizard. It's sort of an unsettling thought, to thing that we can be so unaware of our reality.

Here is his pretty bottom without any ehad piece at all, should have shown this first, sorry.
Well, now that I've posted all of those I can get back to working more on it. Any crits by any who are actualy looking at this thread would be kindly welcomed, check you later.

12-22-2004, 05:17 PM
It's a bit hard to tell if I like a head piece at this point. It's still very sketchy. I know I didn't like the goldilocks one. I think an ornamental head piece would look nice on your character along with other ornamental trinkets. It can show status whether you mean him to look important or beggar like. Nice character sketches!

Good Luck

I have a few more updates to show that I didn't feel like posting earlier. Have also been working on the sinews of the body, etc and the Nebula. The space born civilization, covered by the hand.

BlueEyeLizard, thank you for the comments, I realize I'm going to have to ask for some more opinions if I want to push myself. Maybe make a post in the generals section. I'll show you the head piece/horns in a full body shot, but first to the ships!

I Put some tiny ships in and defined the shape more... not sure if I like the abundance of tiny ships, or just that they look so flakey/soft at this point.

And here it is in full mode.
I\\\'m tryinjg to shape it so that it circles the eye of the viewer back into the composition. Here, let me illuserate.

Some more... though I\'m sincerly not sure if I like it. I\'m trying to portray a sort of drifting feel for the strands of power/eternity(whatever you wish). I think it might be too dense and high up,Definitely too blury. Does anyone know if Painter actually has a sharpening tool? I\'ve looked around but can\'t seem to find anything in the manual nor the forums... I\'m loving this program, but have just started to use it... great timing I know...shut it!

This is with the ships... well, now that I have the bloody time on hands, I\'ve been working like a Mofo at it. Sometimes things come together real smooth, other times it take 5 hours to try and figure out a head piece that in the end you are still unsure of... grrr, anyways, time to go make some crits myself, and also maybe make a call for help.

P.S. I\'m not sure if i like the ships so big... more compensation?... Maybe...

Conceptually, I liked this layout (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/image.php?entry_id=15679) much more than your current image. It has a much more interesting visual appeal and dynamic to it. I didn't look through your full thread (just peeked at the entries on CGNetworks) so sorry, I can't give a more thorough critique at the moment.

Good luck

That makes me want to cry... I will have to go have some serious soul searching now... alright, so it's going to have to be on the toilet, but still, I have to reconsider this... anyone else think the same?
Thank you Kirt...*sob*

Cue the rocky music....
Anyways, I've gotten the opinions of a few other friends and over much discussion they agree, the other concept is more dynamic and interesting... here I go again.

Here's the arm blocked in and ready for carving. I wanted to give it a sort of lanks/elongated feel.

i like the pose youre working on now much better than the last one. it'll be interesting to see how you put it all together with the new pose if you choose to keep it. i like this one because the anatomy issues are resolved much better and it is in a more interesting shape.

I think I'll go with something along these lines. Some organic feel, but still industrial. the balance will work well for me once i tilt it.

Backing it up. Full canvas, but no body.
Amd trying to give a sort of essence feel behin the deity. Maybe I'll make him a little tranclucent so that the red gasseous vapours show through.

Added the filler for the body. Keeping it dark, so that the higlights are that much more impactual....SHWWAAAM!

and then erased out of it. These aren\'t really the highlights, more the moulding for the piece... not sure about the brightness of it...

And this is what the wee little strands of hair... I don\'t know, I think I\'ll edxpand on them so that they resemble my actual concept sketch. Problem is that I don\'t want him/her looking too human... or the strands really looking like actual hair.

I'm not sure if i like the fact that the white seems to cover the deities head. I want to make the light seem as though it's coming from behind, it's not really feeling like that at the moment...
