My first mental image is a broken planet. This is just one of many. It is the legacy of three races -- their mutual destruction has left its mark on the universe.

This arena will have to be my main means of conveying scale and grandeur. This 'hall' in space, of towering pylons carved from planetoids, has seen the rise and fall of many empires. Much as the mythic land where the elephants go to die, here we see the end...

This is my first attempt at incorporating the main items on hand so far: the hallway, the broken planet, and the three leaders.
--------

The alien races are three old men who have come to watch each other die. They do so not out of compassion, not out of hatred. They do not hasten to their ends, for the end will come. They come only to see the conclusion to a slow death -- the galactic conflict that has sucked their life out of them.

With the three leaders at mid-range, they become too conspicuous. At extreme close range, I can put them in scene yet have the main focus far away, right?

Unfortunately, they occlude too much of the scene like this...

Pulling back may be the answer, but the fact that they are creatures instead of inanimate scenery -- like the rest of the scene -- makes the human eye pay more attention to them. Any suggestions?

This composition is about the final moments, just before the complete demise and extinction of the three races. There is little action here; the scope will have to be defined by the size of the elements (planets, huge-a55 towers) and the ruin of them (signs of large-scale violent conflict).

I'm having so much fun!

This will be my most ambitious task yet; I'm still a relative newbie.

Wow, these images are big. Maybe I should have scanned them in at 72dpi instead of 150. Whatever. I was also wondering how many of my sketches and future waypoints I should be posting. I don't want to be putting up every bloody thing I get done, but when I'm observing, I like to see the graphic evolution of ideas.

I've finally decided on the layout and will post when I scan later today.

-----

The three Races have run a bloody race to find the holy place of a legendary race whose power and success have all but faded into a confused mythology.
What the leaders did not expect to find was the ruins of a race that was, in fact, the common precursor race to these three offshoot races. All the turmoil was for naught, and has shamed the survivors. They are all of one family, yet their greed has caused them to self-cannibalize what was once a great and mighty race.

----
As an architectural dude, I'm accustomed to using sketch trace paper to revise sketches, or to redraw completely. Then again, we tend to sketch in ink instead of in pencil. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to approach sketch revision?

This is the layout I will work with. As is usually the case with my compositions, it is very lonely right now and needs to be populated by both animate and inanimate items, of varying scales. Of course, more detail will be developed as I go.

For sketch revis scan into photoshop/painter, something with layers capability. Make sketch your bottom most layer, drop anew layer on top and make it black or white, turn opacity to 30 percent. Drop new layer on top of that and draw on it. This will let you mute out old sketch to draw a new one. Good luck.

I really like what Im seeing in the latest sketch.

This is going to definitely be one I want to watch. I can allready see the final image in my head. Really nice idea! Wish I had thought of it...LOL.

Good luck to you, and I look forward to seeing more!

Thank you eahartz.

Unfortunately, I do not have a tablet and can therefore only draw by hand. This is not the first time I've run into an obstacle that came as a result of not having a wacom on hand. Would a 4"x5" suffice for this work?

Thank you, too, TheRealFlyBoy! You can already see it in your mind, so if you can scan your brain at some point, it might help me with the details. :P

The tunnel was really bothering me; it kept stealing my eyes and pulling them out of the scene. I changed the arena and hope to use the expressions on the two characters' faces to get some evocative response.

I caught a tablet from eBay, so hopefully I can play with some colour...

Okay, so my buddy -- who sugar-coats nothing for me -- says that he liked the first scene better and that he doesn't get any story from the cosmonauts. I agree somewhat; the viewer has to sit, think, and extrapolate the story. Too much brainwork for something that's supposed to be iconic.

I played a bit, and have some revision. The pic will have to wait until Sunday when I can scan it. Short and sweet of the concept: the prodigal children races have returned. Scrap the doom & gloom; they've found their precursors homeworld region.

... and are going to ask Mom and Dad for some more spending money. :P

This reminds me a bit of the work of another entrant who has nomad races all gathering at the hotel at the end of the universe, sort of, but I'm aiming more for the idea of two seemingly-eternally-warring races finding the legendary Precursors, only to find out that they are sibling races and are returning to the parent race.

Daniel,

Nice looking story line so far. I use a 4x5 wacom , it is alot better than a mouse but I dont do a lot of fine detail drawing with it. I find the tracing idea posted earlier in this thread works for creating concepts stuff. I had never done any concept stuff like that before this contest.
Nice character sketch so far, this looks interesting.
