Humanity has populated the stars. Powerful religious and political factions control the galaxy through rigid policing of the space around the planets. Smuggling is rampant. Rumours are that the smugglers originate from one planet. After a heinous crime commited against the Space Pope (I had to) there is an outcry for vengence.
Thus began the 13th Crusade.

Concept Sketch. Testing planetary position, offensive ships. Still thinking about defensive ships.

Cool Idea, though If I may sugest that you bring the planet much closer to the forground. Just because you might have a problem showing accurate scale.

Testing spacial relationships in 3D.
I dont like the current proportions. I'm moving the mine field closer to the planet, making the enemy ships larger, closer . . . something.

Tested a camera behind the invading fleet. Also thinking of adding re-inforcements coming from behind the planet.

Looks interesting... Gonna keep an eye on you!!! Good luck

Very nice idea.
Perhaps a POV with the camera (in rather very low polar orbit) looking across the polar region might keep the planet in view but still allow room for the battle and minefield.

The image is much more interesting and exciting now the camera is behind the fleet - it looks as if we are really taking part in this epic battle rather than just watching from afar - I likey.

Still searching for a good angle. I fleshed out the invading ships a bit more. I actually just had an idea on the mechanism of releasing the fighters that I will explore tommorrow.
I usually do not enjoy drawing, but I immensly enjoyed drawing the swarms of fighters. Strange. Hopefully updated tommorrow.

i like the idea lots, epic to the max. this peice has so much potential, and a large part of what will make it great is the pov. personaly, i think this was suggested above, a pov sortof low to the planet, overlooking the polar region would be best. i think it would look more dramatic, like i would be able to hear the symphony playing in the background better.

Another angle. This one I think might work. There is a close part of one ship 'porting in, and I think I'll have the ship that ran into a mine be spinning out of control. By spinning out of control I mean moving very slowly and rotating away from the epicenter. This is space after all. This view has more of the planet then I thought I was going to incorporate originally, but it is integral to the story.
the only thing I dont like about this scene is the front of the invading fleet isnt seen. Ah well. I cant put decorations of the sides or seomthing. Whoa, another idea. haha.

Okay, everyone agrees POV is pivotal, but I can't seem to achieve a polar view that shows the ships/action. So I thought up a little 'game'. The image here is a large rendering with a co-ordinate system set up. You give me the coordinate and I'll post the shot! I am eating breakfast with the family tommorrow, but should be able to post later in the day.
An explanation of the co-ordinates. the first image is the basis. Both sides are from 1-11 Left/top to right down. I would like the co-ordinates to be like: a3,4 to b5,10 or something like that.
If you understand this and want to do it more power to ya. If your POV is good I'll be sure to mention you in my winning speech. Haha. Oh yea, note: the Bottom left image (b alone) is flipped, so from left/top to right/bottom goes 11 to 1, not 1 to 11. Its from the POV of A.
Wow I get wierd as the night goes on, if any of this post breaks some sort of rule I'm sorry and please delete it.

Chris, your attempts to solve the POV problem are both fascinating and educational. I mean, this is really the crux of the problem a lot of us are having with putting together something "epic" in scope: how do you find that one key image that is both iconic and evokes a sense of wonder? Maybe the best way to get a handle on a space battle would be to look up some of the classic photographs from WW II, and search for those images which both give a sense of something monumental *and* somehow personalize the conflict. Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thinking about how the offensive ships will look. I wanted to do the spherical fighter carriers since the start of the challenge. This is just a rough 'sketch' of the carriers. I really wish I could draw. :-[

Started as an offensive but I didn't like the look. Maybe for defending fleet. Or I might just scrap it.

Here is a slightly new camera angle with better models, and with stars!

Here is a funny sketched . . . sketch. I subtracted one of the invading ships becasue it didn't add anything to the piece. I have added explanations about what everything is/what is happening. Any Layout/Design tips would be much appreciated!!
Oh yea, for those of you following along I have removed the mine field becasue it was lost against the star background.

I like your sketch here and unfolding story of the ships teleporting in, the ship exploding and the dogfight.
The round spaceship is not as good as the raindrop shape because it lacks a sense of direction and movement towards the battle.
Glad to see you have captured the full range of perspective now from very close to tiny and distant.
The composition looks a bit of a collage - separate elements put together. Try overlapping the spaceships more (Like the close ship overlaps the planet). Also try joining the distant ships to the close ships with gunfire or the vapour trails of missiles.
