Well this is where I've been the past few days....my "concept" stetch got a little ..umm.. out of hand and kinda turned into a poster board for my office:eek: .....
I know this is a bit of a change for me ,,,and I'm actually not sure how much time I will have for this works....I want to delelop this story line with my image...so I will be staying away from space stations, battle cruisers, and mecha's that I normaly Love to build.....I want to show an epic tale ,,,a tragety and a fantasy,,,,,,with the wonderfully steriotypical set of 3 moons overhead  ....

This design looks spookily similar to the winning machineflesh image. A rider atop a monstrous steed. It looks good I am a big fan of up close and personal battle scenes (more so than spaceships) and look forward to seeing this one develop.

Thank you I am working now on some character spreads to get my bearings on this project.
...As for the similarity to Kris's winning entry from the machine flesh posted above....he created a great piece of art work and deserved the victory....he has inspired us all with his works....but now are none of us allowed to have a beast rider as a character ?
...I think if you look closly at Kris's piece and then at my sketch the only similarity is that there is a rider on a creature...pretty vauge comparison
....not so "spookily similar" after all
....maybe if i replaced 'm with a horse it would be better ...or maybe a man on a camel in the desert.....actually I've seen a friend of mine ride a donkey before wich was quite comical...maybe that will be better
maybe we are all just obsessed with something riding something elsE

Wow, you are really setting yourself up for alot of work!!
Are you plaing on modeling and rigging then positioning the models, or will you generate them in a static pose?? I would recommend the later just for the shear volume of work you have in your pipeline!!
I truely like the whole organic epic composition. This reminds me of some of the work from HEAVY METAL. Awesome.
I almost feel like its missing a buxum babe with a big gun. Well maybe not, but maybe the composition could use some sci-fi in it like a ship or two.
Great work
buena suerte amigo.

Bishoppess of Death
10-28-2004, 06:58 AM
Better looking when connected to the body, but I've just figured out what's been bothering me about the legs. The tris seem under-exxagerated as compared to the biceps, and from what I know of basic anatomy, it seems like there should be a tendon on the inner side of the elbow joint (it's actualy facing the camera in the wireframe view) And something's up with the wrist area too, I think it's the location of the end of what would be an ulna (is that right) on a human. maybe you should bring the foot back to where the muscle meets the forearms bones.
But that's me. You've still got mad skills in the 3-D department.
keetmun
10-28-2004, 03:46 PM
I agree with the bishoppess, anatomy looks a little off. But it could still work out fine, who knows. Mad skills indeed...

Yea guys...I agree things did look a litle "defined" in the arms...although I am going for a more "Comic " style proportions with this beast...some corrections have been made though..an d I had a bit of time to work my way further down the body today....here....thanks  http://img74.exs.cx/img74/7816/GilrogModel_Arms3.jpg
essencedesign
10-29-2004, 02:43 AM
The smoothing threshold is a little off on the shaded veiws...that will be corrected but I think that an ..umm...edge ..of un-eveness..if that's a word...kinda adds to the chaos of the character...stylized in a way...but It's all come together right...

Nice organic modeling. Course now you've got to get the head finished. That is quite an ambitious concept you worked up and the drawings look fantastic, you really put some time into the quality of them. Mine are quite lackluster, just enough to get the idea. Looking good.

Finished up the modeling on the Main body of the Gil'rog beast. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out since Ii don't do much organic modeling..you really have to just follow the natural muscle lines...my method for modeling like this....no boxes here...detail out...start witrh a detailed section...in this case the arms..and extend your mesh outwards adjusting the contour lines of the curves as you go outwards...Lightwaves extender feature makes this easy...and of course patience...tweaking each vert. from just about every angle you can see it at to give a nice bulging look....anyways babled on enogh...onto the head and gear !
how did i miss this one? awesome sketches/concepts, your a very skilled artist! the model is loking very nice so far too! I will be watching!

a little father along in the development of the head mesh...this kinda shows how I model with curves for complicated organics...gives a proper flow to tthe face and makes things like adding wrinklyes and details much easier,,,splines are the way to go !

Looking good, the wireframe looks quite organized. One thing is catching my eye on the three-quarter view where the shoulder meets with the torso, it looks like there is a ring circling the shoulder, I think it would look nice having that smoothed out.

no horn! The face is too cool without it :D

hey Jeremy..
sure without horn on the front of the face it looks better.. you made very expressive face for your beast and it doesn't needs any horn on the front side..
also i have to suggest you make thighs much wider.. wide thighs would give more strenght tothe look of your beast..

Hey thanks for the call guys...I was definatly leaning towords no horn...only modeled it in cause it was i n the concept....Greentek ..yes I know the legs still need a little bulking up...Will fixx, promise..It has been fun to do a very organic piece because Alot of my recent works have focused around mecha concepts for a project in the works...this is fun...thanks for the support
Its looking good, but looking at ur concept which was awsome i think the model is to thin his legs are to long for his body mass, the drawing was alot beefier. But thats all in relation to the drawing.
nice work dude... maibe if you work a litle more on the anatomy proportions u get best result!!

11-04-2004, 09:42 AM
Very good modelling!
If I may to express my opinion, there are certain things of the head that look kinda weird:
1. the belts that attach the mask to the back side of the head should be appressed to the skin so it will create indents;
2. teeth are kinda abstract right now, should look more natural if you made them growing from the more smooth and defined shape, especially on the bottom jaw. Now the shape is like "/__\" but should be more like "U" and teeth should come along from that line no any outer ones, although they might vary on their tops.
3. Eyes of the beast are not defined. Seems like the eye ball is about to jump out or it doesn't have a sphere shape. I would put it inside to more extend and define more the eye pocket.
That's it from me. Hope that my thoughts were of any value. And very sorry for my bad english.
PS: and may be teeth (small ones) should be either a little bigger (twice?) or there should be more of them. Now it looks not very real...
Andrey.

I have modeled out the saddle for the beast. I know... I know some of the details aren't perfect but I think it will work for a still image...and it works with the cocept i had planned out alright too..maybe in the future I will do much more with him (....animation)..I have begun the rider also but will post him tomorrow...thanks...

i think your modeling progress is really cool man!...but some how your model looks thinner than the beast u showed in your wonderfull sketches...well maybe is just me...i think the work youre showing is first class...the saddle is just amazing..all those details make it pefect!! desing of the beast is really cool and i think that this is going to be a great entry...so im happy i found your thread ...now i can see more great work from u!
good luck Jeremy!

Thank you Snake...happy to have you here in this challenge...but now that means we all have to raise the bar even more  ...thank you for your comments on my beast...I have made him much wider and bulkier than the original model..,but going any bigger and the Rider wouldn't be able to see over his back...and woulden't that just suck  ....I am happy with were i am now , looks more like a assult tank now..and that's good  ,,,I will follow your entry for sure
...greentek..thank you for your coments...I am following your progress...your latest sketch looks great..keepgoing

hi Jeremy.. and thanks for support..
despite the fact that i like your beast model a lot i may suggest you to scale down the head.. the beast with relatively small head should look extremely powerful.. some kind of a lot of strength and a little brain.. :D
btw your very first sketch greatly reminds me the French revolution.. :D i don't know why.. maybe because of Delacroix's "Liberty leading the People".. http://www.owntv.com/pics/liberty.jpg
i hope the comparison with Delacroix doesn't offend you.. :D
the saddle looks great.. though other stuff is not exception.. great work mate..
cheers..
And Indeed the composition resemble to a renaissence picture, wich in my opnion is a great achievement. Congrats.

Looking really nice and quite the wicked beast.........saddle looks cool,I like the curvature and flow, the chains dangling as well are always nice to see.........The musculature is coming along well too......My only thought is that the rider may not be able to see over the head of the beast/creature........You would know best Jeremy,I could be way off with this, but it seems the saddle should be higher, that the back is curved down too low......I am sure you are onto this, and have a plan.......What I see is quite a intense beast and some mighty fine modeling.......All the best to you Jeremy......:arteest:

and I feel lucky to be in the company of such great artists...
The beast is finished more or less..I could add details forever but time to move on to stay on scedual..attatched the head..added a few more chains and the reigns for "Driving" him...detailed in the model with some simple veins and protrusion...Also am working now on the Savage Ta 'Gag handler for him....all that work is going on on my other workstations and my network is down right now so I have to transfer them over and all while trying to watch the game...and have a good ale...life is so tuff..

Lest anyone think I haven't been doing anyhting over these past few days I thought I should let you all know where I am...this is the Rider...only the most savage of the Ta' gag can handle the Gil'rog beast...I could go nutty on him with even more details but I think I'll wind him down from here...still build the mask and add straps and details to the arms and hands...oh and a rifle for 'm....still on scedual...that feels good to sayZ

A look at the base mesh for the body and the armor overtop...I will use this body mesh in one modified form or another with a few interchangeable armor pieces..for all of the wariors along the front lines of the Ta'gag. I will also model 3 more stages of them(lesser in detail) and apply them instance to camera for the battle scene.

This is what i've come up with for the ta'gag race, long jawline with lots of teeth and a low forehead...a very menacing look that I wanted to be similar in some forms to the beast...I see the Gilrog as an overgrown race with a close relation to the riders themselves
...kinda like a big..stupid..brother...need to build mask here, and attatch to body..model hands...and some more straps and armor for around the arms and then done here.. :argh:

LOTR in Space..............;) The thing I like about it beyond the very nice modeling skills on display here is that you are doing "Your " own Space Opera, your own rendition........as you see fit.........Gutsy and I like that.................And yes while it's got the whole LOTR look and feel it can work in Space.......That's a large universe out there, and these creatures could be out there fighting it out in Space.........I think a surreal deep 'Space" like sky will be vital for this in the end, really giving out even more of a "Space feeling" to the work............Keep it up Jeremy.looking nice.:arteest:

Spectacular textures !... but me, I don't like the tattoo... why ? because I find that too beautiful and too artistic for a beast like this one.
I agree with a tattoo, but with maybe a motif more tribal, more savage, more powerful, more expressive, not a tattooing which we could find on the arm of our girl friend.
I hope you understand my point of view...
Of course, the remainder is obviously incredibly awesome man

Hey guys thanks for the support...I have lots to do here...there are many changes and add ons I would love to do to the Gilrog in texturing and modeling...but for now I think I will move forward ...maybe a couple small changes...In the scene there will be 4 variations of this beast in the battle lines so his TPU (total pixal usage) will be less than 1/8 of the composition...basicaly little things just won't be noticed...........as far as the variations go...I will finish up the textures of the Ta`gag rider here within the hour.then spend the weekend modifying base geometry and posing the variations ( the "front line beast,,the battering ram beast, the attack beast ((the one you see already)),,,and the "basic" beast... :hmm: ...well thats what the future holds....need to give myself 40 days for the human tribals and the tweeking so that's kinda whats going on....bye 4 nowZ....every one kep pushin hard :buttrock:

Scary Monster you got there Jeremy, Have u condider covering its boby with some blood and mug? , maybe some scars in its flesh to give 'im an "old warrior dog" feeling, It would be a great image the battle!
My suggestion: Lets get dirty
essencedesign

Thanks Virtuoso...Climax...I plan on adding dirt / blood on a piece by piece basis with some carefuly placed procedurals when rendering out the final..I want to wait though untill I have more of a fel for the final image.....thanks for the comments though dudes...peace

....no they are not rigged modeled in pose because I want every pose to look the best it can....in a still image that's key....
Claudio_Jorado...thanks mate...I have more cooking...look for 2 more different versions of the Gil~Rog today..one "under attack"...and one with a gun tower mounted on his back....
Overcontrast...thank you for your words mate...your work is comming along nicly as well...skin shader
color map @ 90%......base skin tone layer beneath so all maps blend nicly together
difuse @ 105% ...gives a nice soft glow to the skin...
Spec map @12%...invert of bump map...levels and contrast messed with a bit
gloss map @15%...same map as spec....
bump map set up in 2 layers.....take my painted bump map into PS..duplicate layer and add a bit of noise..blur a bit..apply as layer one in Lightwave @ 62% (app I'm using....probably simmilar in others)..add layer 2.....62% also...layer 2 is original painted bump map (no noise)...make this layers blending subtractive.....thats it...breaking it into the 2 layers quickly gives even more variation in the bump than you could take the time to paint....
thats how I set it up with these characters...these guys have a very thick and bumpy hide...and this seems to work quite well as a a shader for them......I will tweek more as time goes on to get even better results, and will be adding layers of dirt and blood over certain areas for the final image......
well back to work...got more beasts and weapons and such to be modeliN....
AWSOME creatures Jeremy as always....keep 'em up!:buttrock:
Is very interesting the concept and the already created 3D, My only suggestion will be to re-consider the color of the nails, maybe something more dark, perhap black like some dogs... Another think you could add some more drops of blood around the face and some splashes here and there. Another think... the gums... way too pink, add some black spots to it, some sort of advance disease, like most animals in real life. Even well taken care dogs have black spots in their gums, horses too.
Bottom line, its really nice :)
-cheers!

my only crit is that the rider and the beast have the same skin texture and color, and they sorta blend into one another..
Versiden
12-01-2004, 09:00 AM
hiya
another suggestion, if look at your own skin, the outer areas that get more sun exposure are more tan and darker... so areas like armpits and hand palms for example are more whiter...
just another idea u can add to get that extra bit of realism...

Vedrsiden...I did try and paint similar huges in the textures of the beast and rider because they are both off shoots of the same savage race...just ones a little ..um ..overgrowna dn mutated a bit...but I will change up the hues a bit more so they don't blend together like you say....thansk for the crit thogh.....\\\
As for right now...I 'm just finishing up the textures and pose for the final version of the savage gilrog beast for this composition ...the Comand bridge tower that will sit in the center of the lines....you'll know more about what I mean when you see it....peace .. :bounce:

Hi there Jeremy!
Once again, an awesome modeling, really great. Very nice idea about a dding a saddle to the big guy! Now it gives a bette sence about his proporcions. And a very nice touch s the soldier in the back with the guns, the screeming while firing (i gues) is going to looks fantastic, thumbs up!!!

The modelling is very good, I have a small objection regarding the feet of the animal... They don't seem very stable. Meybe they should be thicker or somehow bigger... I think the animal is too massive for such small front and rear feet. Othervise, can't wait to see the final render!

yes...yess  ..blood...i don't know why i made this image...just got excited i guess...wanted to see this guy somewhere pristinE before i covered him in blood and put him in the middle of a battle...also just to let me test out some of lightwaves enviroment toys (they are a little limited,,,but they work with the right amound of :banghead: :banghead: ).....also let me say that this is NO Where near my lighting set up...while it looks OK for here...me final will be an HDRI image i am making with HDR shop....like i say...it looked cool so I thought I'd post it....
some info on the battle nest....it carries 2 riders...although sometimes they are rediculously overcrowded ...the Ta`gag can be quite lazy.......one of the riders here is the comander of this group of savages...the Blood fist beastZ (tenative name just off the top of my head .. :hmm: )...anyways and the other rider is the gunner..manning a group of 50 calliber blastaz......
Ive got 7 or so variations of the ground soilder modeled...all off of the base model you have seen so far...already having memory problems with the battle scene so far with only the few soilders and all of the beasts is probably over 2 mill.......I will spend some time here soon figuring out the layers i will need....or some way to render out this scene.... :banghead: ......

texture works on the human aspect of my image... in this story they are a deeply spiritual calm and peacful peoples, the total oposite of the Savages. They spend there lives studying a perfect form of martial art... not for battle, but for a deeper understanding and awarness of themselves...

Great guy! Even without ears:twisted: But I think that he is too celan... also more hair on the body would make him better(painted on the texture maybe, no nead to do some more complicated stuff with particles or so)... and some war paints on his face, and maybe also on the body. The tatto on his back is great! maybe only too blurry, but not much. very very little:bounce:

Aside from the missing ears (oh, the horror) the only thing that strikes me is that the bright pattern on his... er... skirt thingy would look better if you scaled it down a bit, lets say 70% of it's current scale.... Don't know how you've made the textures, so it might be too much work for such a small tweak, but still.
