I have some fairly simple footage and would like to match the camera movement in maya to the camara from the footage (basically so i can replace a building). Is this possible and what is the simplest way of going about it?

Thanks for all your help :x

Do you have Maya Unilimited? If yes. use Maya Live. Press F1 and read up on it.

i was actually wondering the same thing recently when I finally got my digital camcorder.

Is there no other way to camera match than to use Live? What about Complete users, there has to be a rule of thumb that they can follow right?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

camera matching for an animated camera shot is something very far from easy..
if you dont have a tool like live, boujou or 3d equalizer it gets a job that can take you very very very long to do by hand.. if you succeed at all.

but even with those mentioned tools it is still a real challenge that takes a long time to look good - especially for something with ground contact like a building. because there every 1/2 pixel of not matching is noticable.
3d match moving is additionally something that need a lot of experience and usually can not be done the first time you try it. at least from my experiences and i quite have some with different projects.

a good idea (no matter which way you chose to get the match; by hand or with the aid of a programm) is to use a compositing tool after doing the match move rendering and stabilizing it with the tracker in there.. that can fix some of the problems occuring in matchmoving - but not all..

wow i didn't realize it was so hard to get it done... I'm too used to seeing it done at the movies. So much so that it becomes easy to critique (even though I don't have the slightest idea how they do it).

Anyway, thanks a lot for your input.

Actually, I find Matchmoving VERY fun. It's very challenging, and it takes a lot of problem solving, and that's precisely what I like about 3D as a whole. I would strongly recommend first learning how to do it "manually" in a tracking software like Maya Live (not very great) or matchmover or Sci-d-viz 3DEQ or something. Then, I would suggest giving Boujou a run. I STARTED with Boujou, and when I put my first sequence in and got a PERFECT track in just a few minutes, I was spoiled. Then, when I had to do a shot that WOULDN'T track with Boujou, I was very disappointed when I had to do it by hand. --But doing it in Maya Live was much more valuable for me, I think, so I'm glad it happened that way. I say just start with a non-automatic software so you don't have to deal with the disappointment.

Check out the free for non commercial use camera matching software called icarus:
http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/icarus/

The current version only supports exporting to lightwave, but they say the next version will support maya and it is due in the next few weeks.
