View Full Version : Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Richard LaBrie
ChrisABRiley 01-31-2005, 11:08 AM HOLY! I've been browsing this forum for almost 2-years I believe, just as a lurker. But when I saw this thread, waw... I just HAD to step out into the light and post.
It's sooo fantastic!
I've seen some people trying to tell you do this, do that. I say, don't listen to them. Follow your own mind, be original and true to yourself and your art!
When an original artist is born, noone believes in him or what he does. When he dies, he becomes a legend.
It's so fascinating to read all your thought behind this image. And then, to watch the image again(while listening to your soundtrack) and to notice all the new things that you explained. I can't find words really, it's almost like a movie into ONE picture.
I've noticed that some people don't take their time to fully understand an image, they just want to see something that's beautiful for the eye. I look for images who tell me a story. YOU did it. Congratulations, you've got my only vote in this challenge.

As long as I have known DMW, he never does any art/music without really mulling over what the meaning is, or the value. He knows the story of all his art inside and out. It has passion because he always chooses what he believes in. Its expressive because he gives emotions to his pieces which is hard to do unless you study peoples reactions and expressions in life situations. I have done interviews with him on the music side of his work and there is not one album that did not have a theme or reason to it. I think that is why I really like his music.
Long live Arbitress and Indigo.

ChrisABRiley - Man, thank you. Since the contest ended and I looked at the submissions of all the "technically" superior artists on this site, like Michael M. and Dimitris L. I just felt honored to be amongst them, but felt that perhaps I missed my mark. I even began to doubt myself a bit on whether or not I could begin to compare to them. But after reading the posts some of you have made in the last week alone. I feel envigorated. I feel comparison to them is unnecissary. They are incredible artists in their own rights. I don't feel I need to measure up, because the unit is different, if you know what I mean. I hope that one day soon, I may work with such talented artists such as them to help me better realize my visions.
I met Vinshia (Stefanie), playing Counter-Strike, back in the day. She has had a chance to talk to me at great length about my ideas and universes that I have created. Indigo & Arbitress are my epic lovers in a tale that spans thousands of lifetimes and dimensions. The characters you might say are tragedy in nature.
Growing up my influences were strongly pushed by tragedy stories regardless of genre (fantasy, sci-fi, greek/historical), I love things which show flaws, imperfections in character, that to me is what makes a good character. A lead character must make mistakes or else he lacks humanity. Only computers theoretically don't make mistakes. You can make something strong, but somewhere it must be weak. The bad guys need to shoot as well or better than the good guys or else it is just an exercise in cool special effects.
I have no formal training what-so-ever. I was lucky enough to have alot of computers around me growing up and the opportunity to learn to use them. I just got my hands on a copy of a program and said, I want to know this. So I start pushing buttons and looking things up and trying everything I could until it did what I expected it to.
I am a Gemini, there are two personalities so to speak inside of me. One is very visual the other very cerebral. I am split in my views, 1 part emotional content, 1 part firmly placed in logic. You could say that my biggest personal flaw is lack of belief in my ability to acurately represent what I am trying to convey from my mind into my art, music and stories. The posts of the last few days have helped to correct that flaw immensly and for that I thank you. If at least 1 or 2 people out there really see what I am trying to do, and care enough to let me know... for those few I will work till the end of my days. I will forget the vain feeling of needing approval from others of what I do. Thank you for reminding me, it is in my heart where I must keep my art, I must never, ever let it get from there to my head!

Hey Richard, I think your one of the few artist (music) that has a collective theme in one album rather then just have random songs pertaining to a genre. I haven't listened to any of your music yet though. As for you art, picture art, I can't wait to see what you will create next. I'd really like to know about this story of Indigo and Arbitress, maybe they will be seen in you future art work? I like the thought of an imperfect and "not always kicking a**" hero; that's why Spider-man is one of my favorite super heroes: he's far from perfect, has to live a normal life, and is always getting his a** kicked. I use the same formula for creating my many cahracters and stories (hopefully i will be able to finally take them out of my head and share them somehow). Good luck in you future works, hope everything works out for the best. Hope to see your work more often in the future.

When I began writing music I approached the concept from the standpoint of being background for video animation. I had created multiple worlds, characters, entire historical continuums. I put myself into character; I would think about an event and then imagine what would the soundtrack sound like.
Beyond basic theme music to go with art, I decided that in these ficticious times and places how would they view music? In short there would not be Alice in chains on another planet or how would NIN be viewed almost 500 years from now? Would they be considered legendary masters of classical music in the future? If so what and how would it be used? That led to me actually creating characters in the continuum that were in fact musicians and that lead to a whole new series of thoughts such as what kind of instruments do they use 500 years from now? Would they be even remotely similar to ours? If so would they be modified and how? Some of the ideas I have seen become realities in some of the more off the wall musical devices available now. Such as light / heat sensitive devices which react to placement of your hands in space near by, at what angle and what shape to determine the output of the sound. Can you have a 60 piece orchestra today in a single light disc tommorow?
Further into the abyss of my mind I found ideas for instruments based on the hair and scales of creatures which do not even exist much as we harvest horse hair for violyn bows etc. The gamut of ideas streches very far into my mind and heart as a composer. I can now, just close my eyes and picture one of these beings or characters and say how would this artist create a song. Would they stand on top of a hill on their home world seeking inspiration or would they end up in a bar fight and suddenly the ringing in their ears produces the tone, which becomes the song. Anyway, This is the theme of my music, all of it. From now until oblivion...

Just a little animation of Big Bob's Diner and the bomber flying to it. More to come.
