Here's my final image. I just did some very minor changes to the glow.

Over all, I'm very happy with how this piece came out. There's still stuff I could probably keep fixing, but I can always say that about a piece. I hope you guys like it.

Here's an idea I'm running through my head. The scene is an alien landscape. The princess's star ship has crashlanded on a beach after a fierce battle in space. A mysterious stranger appears and rescues her from the reckage and carries her to safety while debree rains down from the sky.

Cool sketches. Two comments...
I think the middle sketch on the top row works best. The symmetrical composition really makes the figure stand out. And you can really give the spaceship a big scale (+ distance fog, as you have done).
There is only one thing that bothers me (perhaps this is too early to be talking about these aspects)...but if debris are falling from the sky, I think it would be more believable if the saviour was protecting the princess from the debris, hunching, while carrying her. And where do the debris come from? The remains of the galactic battle just fought?

I agree, the middle one on the top row looks best because it has lots of room around it, and brings out the sadness that I am assuming you are trying to protray. I like your story too, it would work. I was wondering when you would post something. :)

Those are wonderful sketchs - very loose and expressive - I especially respond to the sketch in the bottom left-hand corner - it has a particularly strong sense of pathos. In terms of overall composition the top-left with the subjects slightly off-centre works best imho.

the middle sketch of the top gives a better idea of the action , and using the last sketch for the woman pose, it'll be great! But it think there is something to do with the top right corner sketch. I'm impatient to see the evolution, good luck

I really do kind of like this the more I look at it, has a nice quiet/thoughtful sort of feeling.

just curious by the way, does she actually have a tail or is that part of the clothing ?

Great to see you again in the challenge, Jason.
I feel the top-center image captures the atmosphere rather well - feels really like the true aftermath of a titanic battle, with chuncks of debris raining down, and the sun obstructed. That her rescuer looks so calm (though strangely sad and melancholy), and otherwise unscathed by any of the falling debris adds to the mystery surrounding the stranger.

Will be waiting for more :D

Nice concept, sexy, romantic, and space related, what else could you ask for! Right now I am leaning towards #1 only because I know you will do a kick @ss job on the figures and I want to see all the detail.

Cool sketches! Love the princess sketch in lower right corner. There's a lot of place for hi-tech details on her clothes.
I think you should avoid the stranger looking right at viewer, add more dramatism to the scene! Better make him looking a bit up/right (from his point of view) as if there was some danger, or even looking back at the ship (not really a good idea while carrying such a fragile body).

I wish you luck with this challenge! Looking forward for your work to be finished

I like the filling of the sketches. The man rescuing the princess fells calm and serine in all the chaos surrounding them, it gives him a god like attitude.

Here's an idea I had of a group of resistance fighters taking a stand against enemy fighters while they try to buy time for the princess to escape.

Here's another sketch in the same storyline. This one has the runaway princess with the character that saved her in the first sketch I did. They are in the streets of a giant metropolis trying to blend in with the podestrians while evading the probes above.

Again, something from the same storyline. This is a climactic scene where the evil emperor has seemingly defeeted the hero and is choking the princess to death. However, the hero is not yet dead and sees a dagger within reach...

hey, jason! this is robin. glad you found your way over to this challenge, i was afraid you might have not noticed it. i really like the first two concepts, but the third one doesn't seem to connect to the theme as well (as mentioned earlier). the second one reminds me a lot of the FF12 promo poster we all love. i think the second one carries the most potential because it has some good storytelling elements and allows for a really nice coloring opportunity. keep us posted!

Very nice pose and geometry :thumbsup: but the emperor looks really familiar to me, hmmm where have i seen it before? it strikes me as the guy from this video game GOD OF WAR and some others there but very good sketch.

ps watch your dagger doesn't fall off the bottom of the page. Can I suggest a sneaky glance towards the emperor as he's reaching for the blade (head in same position)..........just a thought.

Thanks for all of the support so far, guys. I'm still not sure which concept to go with :shrug:
The last one I uploaded isn't done yet. I still have to add in the background. I was thinking either the interior of his flagship or palace. Either way, it would have large towering windows looking out either to a planet or the capital city. Also, the canvas would be larger to fit this stuff so the image won't seem so cramped.

Teknotek: Hey Robin! Yeah, time to try again :) I'm glad you like that second one. I don't know if I'm going to go with it or not... Can't choose! Are you going to enter anything?

Paul: Thanks! Your piece was awesome last round. Can't wait to see what you come up with for this contest. I agree with your point about the dagger. Don't worry, I plan on expanding the boundaries of the image. I might actually redraw it completely. I don't like any of the character designs and I'm not happy with the poses for the girl and the guy.

I'm having trouble making the girl look like she's being choked and held up by the neck. It doesn't look natural as it is and I can't really hold someone up like that as refference :D Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think tipping her head back would help...?

get someone to put their hand around your neck... and you'll tip your head back and look down your face at them. It'sd be even more noticeable if you were lifted into the air....

Have a doodle and see if it makes a difference...?

I switched the guy and the girl characters and played with the characters some. I'm still not happy with the character designs, but I think I like the layout a little better. I still need to come up with a background.

Thanks for the choking help guys. I think I got the upper bodies looking a little better in the choked possition, but the legs still need some work. Personally, I would probably kick the person choking me, but I don't think that would look so great compositionally. Maybe I should try drawing him limp/unconscious?

Well if you're trying to emphasize the superiority of the larger character, then you can get away with showing the person being strangled as being limp/unconscious. But having a character look limp my make the scene look likes less of a struggle. I, personally think you've captured the gesture quite well with the victim. As far as the character kicking in retaliation--- Hmm..It depends on how drawn out this battle is. I would think it's prety drawn out seeing how the other character is already knocked down to the ground. So, therefore the character being strangled might be really pooped :sad:

I really prefer the pose of the large half naked man from the previous concept sketch that you posted. It makes him look more menacing and evil.

The character on the ground looks a lot like the girl in your Machineflesh entry (the ears!!). :p

I really like this one, I'm biased for the most part when it comes to characterizations, I love the stuff. I'm not one for just painting ships. I would definatley tilt his head back and put more pull stress on his arms, he needs to resist more. I would put a blaster in front of her, because he is already weilding a hand weapon, and the blaster on the floor would feel like its the guys weapon that he dropped. Which would leave us wondering, will she blow off the Emporers head or miss and hit the guy....well thats the story I seen. Great work all the way around so far!

Your evil guy before looked more powerful because it looked like throttling someone was done with much ease...........making him look more awesome and strong. The sketch of the girl in the top left corner of the latest sketch is perfect. I'd love to see a redraw of the earlier composition with the ammended girl........after all it's always cool to know that it'll be the bloke that grabs the dagger and saves the girl................love the drama you're developing here!

Glad you guys are liking the villain so far. He's my favorite design out of the three right now. I'm trying to think of a good composition in my head to incorporate more background and story telling. I'll try to post some idea sketches for that when I get a chance.

nice sketches,I particulary like that evil guy, and the elfin girl gives a strong final fanatsy vibe. He does sort of look like that dude from the cell, but who cares - he was creepy as hell!

It's all cool stuff. It's coming along nicely. Have you tried designing your character once you've worked out the composition. From an abstract point of view, the form of your anatomy in it's pose can suggest certain design element to be added to excentuate whatever movement or feeling you're after. Like in games and the movies, when you're designing characters they have to work from all angles.........in a one-off Illustration it only has to look best from one angle.

Why I'm mentioning this, is in the past I've designed a character and very early on favoured a design element (chest plate on the armour for example) and it's stifled my final composition because I've limited myself to certain angles because I wanted to show off the 'chest plate.'

Everyone works this stuff out differently, but if you ever try it, it can have some great results.

Trying to flesh out the composition. Here's what I've come up with so far. I don't know if I'm going to go with this or not. I'm thinking of having a battle going on outside of the window in the distance. Comments welcome.

Paul: Thanks for the advice about designing after composing. You have a good point. I have a habbit of designing characters as if they'll be used over and over even in this kind of one shot illustration. I did this last time around too. Well, I'm moving back into working on the composition now and I'm not affraid to adjust the designs for the sake of the overall piece. I guess I just like to play with my design options without having to redraw the composition. Although, I guess if I did the composition roughs digitally I wouldn't have to worry about that :P

Tommy: I've actually never watched the Cell... Maybe I'll check it out. If I can remember from the commercials, it had a kind of blood red color scheme, right? I think my inspiration for the villain came more from Brom.My original intention was to go with black clothing and white skin on him, so hopefully it won't look too much like the guy from the Cell :P

Blackarts: The girl does kind of look like a Final Fantasy XI character... I'll try to make sure it doesn't look out of place in the image.

i think a pale orange light sourde from the lower left will really help balance out all the blue. and watch how much pure black you use, you sort of want to go easy on it and use different blacks with colors added in or layering. thats all if you choose to stick with this image.

hello again, jason. i'm really enjoying the verticality of this composition. everything is looking really nice, but i would like to suggest that you make the bad guy look like more of an imposing threat. maybe have the arm with the sword raised or have it starting to rise as if he's going to kill her. it'll look good either way. :p

Beautiful images, but I think you need a few more story elements to really make this sing.

Why the big guy he killing/choking her? Implies hatred above and beyond typical warfare. Are they blood enemies? Is she an unfaithful lover? Is this a family squabble? Perhaps patches on uniforms would indicate who's on what team.
If the guy on the floor reaches the knife, is he a match for the big guy with a long sword? Somebody mentioned a gun. What if he were reaching for a doomsday device that's set to explode? Would the big guy prevent him from shutting it off? Would he be so preoccupied with choking the girl that he would forget all about it?

IMO details like this are needed to make the story "epic", making it bigger than just three characters in a fight. Feel free to use any ideas if you like them. I'm looking forward to see this as it develops. Good luck!

The picture itself looks really promising, but i just dont have that grand feeling watching it. hmmmm... It could be just me, so dont bother about that, and its a really different way to aproach grand space opera theme (not just spaceships and planets flying around), but i just told my opinion. Keep up the good work!

I agree with ilikesoup - I can't tell who is on what side with all of them wearing black

She could be anything from his unfaithful wife to a traitor to his cause, but we can't tell. If they are on the same side, maybe some kind of insignia...and maybe make the man in front have different color clothing. If she is on a different side than the big guy, she should be wearing a different color I think.

Someone suggested an orange light or glow, that's not a bad idea - you have an awful lot of black going on here.

Your idea for the space battle outside the window is excellent. I think you should go with that.

Overall, the drama in the scene is very nice! Keep going, dude!!:thumbsup:

I decided to develope another one of my ideas a little more and see if I like it. The image is still very rough. Basically what is happening is that the two characters in the front are trying to escape undetected from the authorities that are after them. However, they have to be fast because there are enemy patrols both on the streets and in the air searching for them. I'm thinking of taking it into the direction that the city is controlled by a currupt government and the two characters in the front have discovered/taken something of importance to a powerful figure in that government. I'll flesh it out a little more when i get further into the image.

Refining the sketch a little more. The character on the left is wounded and is being supported by the female character on the left who is also holding a glowing pendant. Perhaps someone of power is looking for this pendant and will go to any cost to retrieve it...

Why not you try to put some people between "camera" and main characters? To give to the spectator the sense that is in that place, in front of the characters, immersed in action.

Heya Jason, diggin' on the new concept and compo~ This one definitely has a lot more pace and you feel like you're right in the middle of this enormous saga. You're not sure how much you've missed and how much is yet to come, whereas your previous one felt like a story winding down. You know the it's almost over, and you can make guesses on how it ends. This one feels more epic to me.

I like what I've seen so far. I loved your machineflesh artwork so I aspect to see something at least as great as that one. About your two main compositions, have you thought combining those two in one? Like take the top with the nice patrol ships and add on the bottom the other scene. I think those two complete each other. What do you think?

Jason,

it is great to see you making a comeback for this challenge. your entry for machineflesh was inspirational with a great colour palette (especially in the main figures hands) and it was disappointing to see you not up there in the top three.

the sketches are looking really promising. the changes in the direction of your piece are avoiding the common pitfalls of sci-fi cliche, something your previous composition looked to be walking straight into.

The dash of orange in the skin areas brings out the characters nicely and is reminiscent of a Craig Mullin's work in regards to colour usage.

The rim lighting across the characters shoulders and head from the light source at the top of the image are tying the fish eye lense composition together really effectively.

It is difficult to say at such an early stage due to lack of detail but would it be worth off centering the main figures and bringing them forward and left. then bring the character to the viewers right more hunched to really emphasize the relationship between the two characters (it appears the character on the left is protecting the character on the right) and then emphasize the face of the left figure looking back slightly over his shoulder and getting some nice facial detail as the lighting from the top source trickles over the left side of the face, leaving a shadowed right side with a dab of local colour, mainly in the orange tones already used. it might strengthen the passage of the viewer's eye, while retaining the background figures over the hunched figure.

It's looking promising either way.

I really like this new composition you're working with. The camera angle and perspective are really amazing! I like how you're slowly refinig the colors too. It's not looking totally 'epic' yet, but i know it's a work in progress. Anyhow, no real C&C to add, just wanted to say that i like where you're going with it. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the support and great ideas, guys! I deffinitely like this one more than my previous one, but I'm still not sure if I'll stick with it. I still have one more idea I want to try before I start going into the next phases... I better decide soon though or I'll run out of time :shrug:

Team Freefall: Thanks, but I hardly think I'm anywhere near Craig Mullins :) I'll think about bringing them forward and left if I do more work on this concept. That would allow me to put some more detail in the other pedestrians, which I kind of wanted to do anyway. The hard part is finding the right ballance of everything composition-wise.

e22: I'm trying hard to make sure it feels like a shot from a movie or something. My normal work doesn't have much storytelling in it so it's fun to do this kind of stuff.

monsitj: I agree about increasing the size of the ship. I was thinking of making the one on the left much larger and more of a cruiser while the other ones would be more like hover platforms with soldiers standing on them.

LuisNCT: That's something I'm really thinking about. I'm torn between having that sense of immersion versus showing the people in the background... I guess I could play around with it and see.

Anyway, I have a bunch of sketches for another idea I should upload. I'll let you guys see what you think about that one...

Basically what I have here is the heroes, the woman and the big robot, are fighting off a horde of alien monsters. They need no army, because they are a legendary duo... I don\'t have names and such yet. I was either thinking that they should be in a city that is now overrun by these creatures or they were exploring some ruins in a forgotten planet and were suddenly ambushed by primitive alien monsters. I\'m currently working on a tighter sketch of this. I also played with the idea that they actually found and took some kind of artifact which unleashed this horde and now they are trying to escape, but that might be a little cleche.

Not sure if it was intentional, but the familiarities are there (mostly the giant robot and the incoming fist-sandwich!). But those poses are just awesome! CFD3 must be really fun for you :p

Tightened up that last composition a little bit... I have the girl standing ontop of a car and the setting is like a slightly futuristic earth city being attacked by these aliens.

I'm still not sure which idea to go with. I'm liking the second and third concepts more than the first one... Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I really like the last concept. The only thing I would do is highten the canvas more and put also something in the far distant to support the forground and take away that tight feeling I have right now. It also would make a nice compositionflow and the scene much grander.

I developed that last image a lot further with color. I'm starting to like this one a lot. Basically there are a bunch of aliens invading the planet and the humans are trying to put up a resistance. I'll put together a more detailed story later.

giza-di: I tried to push the robot back a little to give more space between the girl and the robot. Hopefully this helps to bring the depth back into the image.

Tommy Lee: Thanks for the suggestion. I took your advice and really opened up the image. I was able to add alot more to the background and even in the foreground. I think it works much better this way. Thanks :thumbsup:

Also, you guys may have noticed I gave the robot a weapon. Originally I was trying to make it look like the robot was hitting a bunch of the smaller aliens, but then I thought it would be cool to arm it and set it against a massive alien :twisted: I'm not happy with the large alien's design at this point, so it will most likely look a lot different later.

Bringing some distance between the girl and her robot, for me also lessened that really strong compositional link present in the sketch, which looks more iconic and comicy (is that an actual word? I hope you are able to follow me :shrug:). Maybe you could give them some kind of similar gadget or other visual link to tie them together.

Apart from this I really love your style and concept so far. Lookin forward to your next sketch.

Nice touch giving the robot a weapon. Goes very well with his medieval looking armor.

I think this is looking great Jason.

I can't find much to critique at this early stage, but I like the overall idea. Good compostion, lots of action....right up my alley. I did the like the idea though of having the robot really big, as in your previous sketches. It does have a strong half-life 2 vibe (not sure if you've played it), but the buildings in the BG, the chick, her large pet robot, and the oranges and greys all remind me of that game. Obviously it's all going to change, but that was my first gut reaction when I saw this. Anwyays, strong work!

Personaly i'd liek to see masses and masses of alien guys surounding their platform trying to get to them. Then it would look like a "last stand hopeless battle" sort of thing. but it has been done with the DOOM cover and in the movie Alien vs Predator. so mabie not.

Great work Jason; it’s really progressing nicely. My only suggestions would be to make sure that both figure silhouettes work independently from each other since the girl’s silhouette is contained with the larger figure. CodeNothing: I was thinking the masses of aliens in the beginning as well, but I want to keep this different than what other people are doing. I think if I made the masses of aliens too thick it might look too much like Daryl's :P I guess we'll see how it goes as I continue fleshing things out.

SideAche: Don't worry, I'm keeping an eye on the girl and robot. I'm trying hard to make sure that she's still readable. I'm a little scared about having the pole of the robot's weapon passing through her head... I have to be careful not to make a bad tangent there and mess everything up.

Kraull: I'm glad you like my lighting. For some reason on both this contest and the last one I chose really cold and stark color schemes... Most likely it will stay fairly similar to this, but you never know...

I took a long break from my Space Opera piece for finals... Now that I'm back, I don't like what I have anymore... So I went back and I came up with another idea.

It's going to be a shot of some kind of dark army lead by their commander. They'll be walking through the ruins of their latest conquest.

im just commenting because THE FINALS HAVE POISONED YOUR MIND, MAN!!. although im sure that whatever image you go for will be developed to an impeccable standard, i think that your existing composition is quite amazing. the potential for some great arcitecture and an all too immense lighitng scheme,(as already imlpemented) is a great foundation.

i can only hope you'll carry on with it because it really is fantastic.

teknotek83: I hope this is a vast enough army for you. It's going to be tough painting all of these characters, but I think it'll be fun. I made it more interesting for myself by making them all different in design. Imagine that they continue back in space :)

I had areas that were unresolved that I couldn't get to look the way I wanted and it was just proving to be more of a headache than anything else. Maybe I'll go back to that image one day.

J. Nieuwland: I ended up doing lines for the characters anyway... I was stuck at home during the holidays so I just drew up this three-page spread for scanning when I got back. I can still paint freely for the background though.

Hi Jason,

I very much like the composition of your picture. The mood and look of the destroyed city looks very convincing and gives a good impression of the culture the habitants had. Though it doesn´t look grand at first view - I think it is a very fresh view in terms of the topic. Great work.

It would be nice to adept something of the habitants. Maybe some convicts trailed in chains by the conquerors. But this might be a big cut for the composition a that time.

Ok, I went ahead and tried this with a verticle format. Now you can really see the legions of soldiers. I've also added the idea that the mother ships that they use to attack the planet appear by opening worm holes in the sky and just dropping in for surprise attacks. Also, I have spider mechs in the croud that have cages for bodies that are used to transport prisoners/slaves.

Do you guys think that these are good changes or should I just stick with the original simpler horizontal format? Any feedback would be helpful since I need to really get working on this if I want to finish in time.

I'm liking where you're going with the vertical format. The only drawback is you characters aren't quite as epic. The action becomes the more dominant feature. Works for me either way you go. Nice work...

I like the vertical format, only problem is that the statue is drawing a lot of attention.
I would leave the statue as it is now, but give the Mothership humongous proportions, filling half the sky. One bad ass Mothership dropping out of a wormhole... yeah, that would be cool :)

Well you can think of this as 2 edged knife.

Its pretty obvious you will lose the characters if your going for portrait, but in exchange that you will control vertical plane which is source of all grand. So you will be opening up new doorways to new ideas.
Also space becomes evident. Lot more space for things that fly. That statue will be able to hold the picture. It looks cool already.

As for landscape.
You will be able to let people see huge band of brothers. But it will more likely be in the direction of braveheart or lords of the rings.

Conclusion.
Stay in the landscape mode, but you can cut more room for spacestuff.. just go for typical computer screen size. You will be able to add plenty of stuff to it. Since youre are mostly in panoramic view.

Did this made any sense? I think not:sad:

personally I kind of liked the cinematic feeling of your previous update. The central figure with his red cape made a really strong statement that now feels diluted. It still looks pretty cool though, I think either way will work out - just follow your instincts and do what you do best. It's going to rock.

Ok, another composition. I didn't include the vast army or wormholes, but the composition is a little more balanced, in my opinion. I'm also thinking it might be cool to have the ships kind of emerging from behind the clouds and the clouds go swirling off the sides of the ships.

Ok, here's another layout. I think I like this one the most. I found that by cutting off the top of the giant mothership, it no longer reads as a focal point and fades back into the background bringing the attention back to the characters.

I've tightened up the ship some more. I think it looks like a flying fortress at this point. I decided to make it partially hidden in the clouds to make it more a part of the background. Plus it just looks bigger that way.

I like the addition of the Mother ship. My only concern is that the entire composition feels very straight ahead, one point perspective and all, very symmetrical. I'm sure once the characters are rendered this impression will fade.

very good work and solid composition. that sculpture -with the look like alien welcome- is like levitating, is very highligted, like front plane, not for the second plane where is placed. very dramatic atmosphere there and good light control. kepp going.

Amazing as usual Jason _ I am a big fan of your work. Its cool to see how many diferent concpets that you went through on the way here. I honestly leved what you did in concept 3 with the giant robot behind the girl. For some reason when you did the color comp you changed the perspective and scale and it just didn't hit me the same. I love where this final image is going, love the mood, scale, drame, etc but you really should go back and finish concept 3 at some point after the contest.

Can't wait to see the final details on this bad boy : )

Thanks for all of the support guys. At the beginning of this contest I was having a lot of trouble finding a composition that I really wanted to work on. Now with less than half a month left I finally think I've found it :scream: I wish I had come up with this earlier so I can work longer on the details, but too late for that now.

As for those other compositions that I abandoned on the way... Who knows, maybe I'll pick them back up later on.

Okay, back to work!

I've been working on the central figure of the piece. I still have a little ways to go, but you get the idea. I think I spent too much time in the face. I can even zoom in some more and the detail will get even clearer, but there's no real point to that since the image as a whole is much bigger than this. Oh well, I love doing characters :p

Here's a closeup of his face. It was all done in Photoshop with the airbrush/paintbrush tool. A little smudging was used with the hair.

Anyway how strong are you going with the heros red cape and the woman character red hood.
Will you be letting the red flow in as ambient color? Will you emphasize it? Or just muffle it under blue?

Falcor : Right now I'm not really sure how vibrant the red will be. Most likely it'll be fairly muted with the exception of a few areas where I want to pop it out. I'll just have to see how it looks and work from there. Let me know if you have any thoughts on that.

About the red hue.

Well i can offer you 2 ideas

First: triangular red ambience from the spaceship to chest plane of the characters.
ambience must be very subtle.

Second: two horizontal boxes. One for space ship plane. One for character chest plane.
Stronger red hilites. Less ambience.

Conclusion is open. I have no definite better solution to offer this time.

Very professional work! The look you gave her is fantastic, specially being overshadowed by her hood. The clothes and overall body are great. I would suggest, however, changing her left hand by placing the sword in the middle of her fingers, or better, by placing it between her fourth finger (don't know what you call it in English) and her thumb.

I really envy your technique!

Thanks for all of the support guys! To tell you the truth, for a while there I wasn't sure if this project was ever going to start coming together. Now that I have a few weeks off before school, I can really sit down and work on this. And, it feels like it's paying off.

Speaky: I was thinking about that as well. Out of all the compositions I came up wtih for this contest, this one is the most simple and symetrical. However, I like it more than all of those other ones... Maybe it's its simplicity that makes it work for me.

andreasrocha: Yeah, I'm not totally happy with her hand either. I was trying to think how a person would rest their hand if they had a sword on their hip. Maybe I will have to get some refference.

teknotek83: Thanks :) I think having all of these different character designs is very important. If I had to paint the same uniform over and over and over... blah :rolleyes: The variety keeps me interested.

I'm totally the same way. People always tell me my compostion/camera angles are too straight on and boring, but it's not like I don't know how to do dynamic stuff--I just always end up preferring a simpler one.

I actually have a theory about why we have that kind of a preference. I think it has to do with the fact that iconic shapes are the most powerful, ever since the beginning of civilization. We respond visually to iconic shapes because it's the most primitive, identifiable, and creates powerful silhouettes--something that animators understand instinctively, as does concept designers.

Very true. Especially during this contest, I tried various concepts that had your eye flowing from one element to another trying to tell a story in a semi-complex composition, but it just wasn't working for me. Then one day I was like "what if I just had this big army walking straight at you?" At first I thought, no it's too simple and bland, but I ran it by my girlfriend and she thought it was a good idea. She doesn't have traditional art training, so when I show her this straight forward composition next to my other complex compositions where I try to use the Golden Rule, blah blah, and she picks the simple one, I just have to trust her instinct. Some time art training gets in the way :P

I'm not saying that art education is worthless, of course. I've learned an incredible amount. But like you said, rules are to be broken :) If something that goes against the "rules" looks better, how can I argue?

I've no comment for now except that maybe it could be a little bit less centered. But that just my opinion. Good luck with the deadline with all those characters to render! This is to address the centeredness of my piece. What if I were to make it so the huge flying fortress was coming out of the clouds from the right instead of the middle? Also, I would have it facing at an angle instead of straight on. I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this idea.

I dont think the issue is trying not to keep the spaceship at the center of the pic. The reason it might be looking so straight oriented is the orientation of the spaceship.

But adjusting direction of the spaceship is not easy. Specially in 2D artwork.

If the ship would be seen sideways nobody would think that the composition is straight forward.

Just by tilting the heading will probably hit the problem straight on. Rather than trying to move to ship to the side.

I think you should leave the ship as it is, as well. It really emphasizes the gargantuous size and scale of the ship compared to ruined city and the soldiers walking through it. Although, there seems to be some minor symmetrical issues. I'm sure you've already caught them, though. Work furiously on this, Jason. But please make time for 24!! :p

I'm not a favour for centre piece focus work but what you have there really makes me think twice about my thoughts. You have it dead on correct there. The message you are trying to get across is the main characters and the flying fortess right, then I believe that message is already very powerful. They act as first element to see then the second would be the surrounding environment along with the least common characters standing in the dark. If you let the fortress sit on the right, it would probably lose that strong flow and bond between the main characters. You could probably try out your idea though do note that the deadline is coming close by. Anyhow it looks excellent as it is.
