Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 / 480 x 640 OR 800 x 600 /600 x 800
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

fluffy, very dark atmosphere,
captain, hehe, same idea
snakebyte, I like the idea of the hidden killer-pumpkin between lots of similar pumpinks :argh: ;)

I've lost quite a bunch of topics, I've been busy making 2 drawings for my parents (I'm thinking of posting them in the 2d-wip section...), and now I'm thinking about entering the space opera challenge, I've never made one and I'm a little frightened because of the high level there...you people that have seen my other sketches (today's is quite bad), do you think that I should give it a try?

edit: link updated

Vitriolic, great one! How do you achieve such nice two-color lighting? I'd love to hear about your technique.

grrrr... I've overflown the bandwidth of my 2 free hosts, maybe it's the time for creating a third one, or start paying  ...any other solution? I cant find any free host with hotlinking and enough bandwith (I've already seen the Free Web Hosting solutions (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=49778) thread)
I've decided to join the cahllenge as soon as I get web space for it, I've got already some ideas...

Hia people. Some good ideas so far. Have to say its neat Vitriolic, nice lighting - really cool how the blueish light morph into redish:)

Heres mine:

Hey aghill. I like ur idea. Space.....where there is no other lifeform.....or has it? ^^

Vitrolic's art is superb + details. Photoshop in 2 and half hours is really fast. The monster and texture on it is very well rendered. how do you get everything done so nicely in so short time?? I would take few days just to get mine done ><

Keep up guys~! i'll check back later in the morning. It's 4:50am over here. need sleep~!

Elmasfeo, I agree with ilikesoup. Why not at least try for it? It will help you to develop your skills even more. There is a saying that goes "nothing ventured, nothing gained." I don't know how well that translates, but basically it means if you don't try, you can't win! Go for it!!

ok, robin, ilikesoup and sampo, thanks, I've finally entered the challenge, that will probably mean I wont do many DS from now on  , but I think you will survive without me, hehehe :D
I've finally found a free image server, I'll try it, and I will post everything with thumbnails or I will overflow it again and again...I've updated the first post.

aghill - I was thinking about a crashed down spacecraft on my challenge entry, hehe, I'll maybe use your pic as a reference :D
matsuru - very nice! great lightning, I like how your vampiric clown appears from the darkness and merges with it...
vitriolic - amazing textures and lightning, I agree that it would be cool to know how you did that

Hi guys, thanks for the kind words :)

As for technique and lighting, I started with rough linework, blocked in the colours using dark tones, then quickly put in some 'ambient' lighting using a coarse brush with variable opacity.

Next was the orange kinda glow from the lantern, again using the rough brush but with a reasonably bright orange. I started out with a big brush and slowly reduced its size while moving from general illumination to highlights (controlling size with the [ and ] keys makes this nice and quick.) Was trying to visualize the scene in 3D as I did the lighting, and figure out roughly where the light would reach and not reach. That's the bit I find hardest at the moment, and you'll note that I completely missed out the shadow of the man's hand holding the lantern on the monster. Call it artistic license!

Once the orange was mostly in, changed to a lighter yellow and a smooth brush. Kept the brushsize small and put in various highlights.

Lastly grabbed a cyan colour and did the other light in the same fashion.

That's pretty much it, although I did jump around a bit during all this - made mistakes, tried to fix them, swapped between lights, etc. Not sure if this explanation makes any sense - I suppose WIP shots would be better! Well, hope it helps anyways.

edit: Forgot to mention the cheesy lantern glow - did that with a orangey colour, smooth brush set to a very large size, and the 'screen' blending mode.

Cheers,
V

Oh yeah and great work guys, particularly like your one matsuru. I think you have a great lighting technique - looks much more natural than what I've been doing!

 for everone.

I stayed with the Halloween/Horror theme, but I went with the blindfolded approach. As I was painting this I realized I have been watching too many horror and zombie movies lately.

45 minute sketch in ArtRage / 45 minutes painting in Photoshop / Wacom

Great sketch matsuro & vitrolic... love the styles.

Vitriolic: that's awesome! Extra points for posting your technique!

Here's mine. It looked fine on my own personal computer but from here, the contrast seems too minimal and so you can't really make out what is going on. That could be a good thing though...

Hello, Is anybody there?
For those of you who may not know, SETI is the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. They use the satellite array at Arecibo to do searches of the sky looking for "the little green men." This is my tribute to all the hard-working folks at SETI!

Thanks for the feedback everyone ^^! i had a nice sleep + a weird dream last night.

Elmasfeo, I agree with ilikesoup. Why not at least try for it? It will help you to develop your skills even more. There is a saying that goes "nothing ventured, nothing gained." I don't know how well that translates, but basically it means if you don't try, you can't win! Go for it!!Yup, couldnt agree with that more. ^^ u have the chance to get critiques from the Best Artist from the world.

Vitrolic: ohh, so that's how u do it. now i know ^o^ I've stop painting with photoshop after i discover painter. But my skills on painter is not as good as photoshop, still got alot of unknow territory to explore. i agree on 'screen' thing, that tool is very very nice to create light. try making light with 'dodge' + 'soft light'. The effect also quite nice.

DigitalSkunkwrx: woo, ur style reminds me of Metal Gear Solid's Game Artist. Sketchy yet detail. yup, blindfolded is indeed scary..especially when u hear the chainsaw...

Russell_Collins: wow...looking for something. wat's the giant doing btw?

robinayles: I never thought of this. thanks for opening my eye here. ^^

richd: haha.....wat happen to the person? vanish in thin air?

FridayEve & Novacaine: I like both ur style. reminds me of Aliens and Starship Troopers. ^^ Fridayeve's Color is vibrant and nicely done. Novacaine's is kind of tone down abit. Mine also after smudging and mixing color, maybe a little level tweaked could help.

thanks everyone. keep posting ^^

pm_ceglowski: Another great one - very painterly. How do you find ArtRage to work with?

robinayles: Seems like your work is improving with every sketch! This one has some nice texture to it in the clouds and grass.

Russell_Collins: Badass! I think the contrast is fine, seems like the subject matter warrants a very dark piece. Only thing I might say is it looks lke the reaper guy looks tom me like he's more interested in the car than the dude with the torch! ;) Great work.

DigitalSkunkwrx: Excellent composition and very creepy to boot.

Novacaine & FridayEve: Gotta love Space Marines :D

matsuru - I really like your work
Russell_Collins & DigitalSkunkwrx - you both continue to surprise and WOW me with your work!
FridayEve & Novocaine - similar idea, huh? REally good execution - both of you!
whirlwind - nice use of color, very moody
pm_ceglowski - WOW-WOW-WOW! This one really knocked my socks off! Fantastic!

Vitriolic, you are easily one of my favourite list of sketch artist here and this is sketch entry is no exception. Your colour sense is just wonderful and I love the detail. I couldn't believe it was done in no longer than 3 hours time! Love the texturing and details! Also the overall idea!

Matsuru, I love that creepy clown so much! And your figure is awesome! And... You're from Malaysia! Somehow I had a feeling you might be related to TOA? Maybe not. Pardon me here!

pm_ceglowski, wonderful texturing and colours too!

Ton, *laughs* I love the idea of you using the same colour with the thread's background colour.

And everyone else, lovely works amd keep it up! You guys are inspiring! :D

Vitriolic: hey! thanks for stopping by my site^^ ur stuff are great as well. mine are just not bad, can be better^^

The Ton haha...i tot u save it as gif ^^; but after checking, it's just the same color as the background in the forum. nice lens-flare.

robinayles thanks~!

Hammy_W yup have to agreed that V is definately a +fav. hey~! u from Malaysia also man~! small world it is. and i also have the feeling that u got something to do with TOA. ^^

The Ton and Robin...GET A ROOM!!

The Ton, mush as I do love your picture I would have thought that the torch was fairly useless judging by the light coming from behind the character and casting that huge shadow...just something to think about, like i said, nice work. I may get round to doing another one one day!!

pm_ceglowsk (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=106548) - yours is my favourite so far...it looks as if there is a hole in my screen and someone is actually looking at me thru it..very realistic wet-looking eye.

of time consuming activity ;) I'm glad to be part of the DSG community :D
