Ok, now i know that i'm just suck on scetch drawing with mouse... But its the best that i can offer at this time...
Anyways, about the story:
While a Kurtan cargo ship guarded by dozens of small ships travels near the Mahdun planet, they are being assaulted by space pirates Shichils. When traveling the small guardian ships are surounding the big cargo ship, and when they are attacked they spread out and smash the opponent.
Thats for the moment.

Ok this is the beginning of the Shichil asault ship modeling, it isnt a detail model and has no mesh smooth yeat... But still to come :)
Well i must confes that i havent had lots of time for the challenge and i dunno if i'm gonna make, but gonna try hard :)
Thats it for now, stay tuned!

this is very nice design you showed here. Organic and technical at the same time. I like it. Maybe you should add some hint where is pilot's window.

11-06-2004, 10:38 PM
I have to say that i like it unsmoothed, angular, better - only i'd change that boxy thing in the middle. Unsmoothed version looks more aggresive, dangerous than the smooth, round one.
Kaksht
11-07-2004, 07:13 AM
plaguelord - thanks man, i'll updatew it as soon as possible :)
turbinea - thanks, the pilot window is going to be in the front bottom, in the bulging thing, that ones not a gun :)
azazel - hmm, i'll think about it, maybe i'll post the unsmoothed version later and you can decide then, which is better :) btw, that boxy thing in the end now isnt quite boxy at all :scream:
Thank you all for posts, the support is really helpful!

I like the ships that you are modeling...they are very original,,,and your scene is going to look very good indeed...perhaps adding some small details in the openings in the ships between the "armor" areas...they don't have to be much...just simple primitives cylinders for hydrolics...some drawn out polys...ect..give the light something to reflect off of and will add a nice touch of beleivablility...that is just a sugestion though..I am sure you have everything under control....cheers

Keep up the great work! As somebody else has already mentioned earlier on, I like the originality of your ships, it's like they're from 3 different worlds. What I'm finding the hardest is to come up with designs that don't resemble anything that's already been done. Congratulations on your designs and modeling. I look forward to seeing how you texture them and start to compose them in the final scene.

Divaise - thanks, well You see, the first two ships belong to Shichils and the last two - to Kurtans. Shichils are an agressive race, something like space pirats of some kind. And Kurtans are trading race, and they are being attacked by Shichils while bringing one of their products to a customer. So with the softness i try to achieve a non agressive look of the ships.
d-tox - thanks man!
overcontrast - thanks, i appreciate Your compliment about the Shichil fighter :)

Hello.
So, ive added some volume light to represent the engine glows and placed a cone with glow in the middle of the engines to give the nice white glow. I will change the glows of the engines in all previous ship models, cause the spot light does it much better then an omni.

12-06-2004, 02:25 PM
You have some really interesting designs for ships. If you were going for non cartoony, It seems that it would be crucial to texture em right.. Might i suggest a organic texture maybe with SSS for the rounded ships. Making the ships look alive
arturro
12-06-2004, 02:28 PM
I think that it would b ebetter to use a gradient like glow. with a white color inside, blue or red or orange after it... to understand better what I mean, look on these Dimitris's entries:
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?p=1789999#post1789999
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=178386&page=8&pp=15
for this purpose, such glow is much more realistic
Kragh

LordApophis thank You for reply :) Yes i'm gonna texture the last two ships organic way and the first two kinda metal of some kind or smth like that. Well i dunno what is an SSS so if You can, please explain what it means.
arturro well, ive looked at one tutorial to make that glow but couldnt find where i could place a gradient of that kind in the glow parameter pannel, can You help?
the tut ive used: http://www.secondreality.ch/tutorials/effects/rocketfume/flame.html

12-06-2004, 07:30 PM
Hi there, you must add the lens effect glow through the video post! first add a camera to the video post(or a view to which you would like to add the glow, e.g. perspective) and then add lens glow effect, and the window there looks the same as the one on the tutorial. If you have any problems, then shoot me:)
Kaksht
12-07-2004, 07:03 AM

12-07-2004, 09:38 AM
As far as I know you have to do it through post... but I'm also just learning and don't know all the possibilities. Search glow in the help file... I will also do it soon ,because I also need some glow to my ships.

Hello i'm back after the holidays :) And now lets get back to work.
userBrian well, dunno about the rust, doesnt seem to be logical that ships that have never been in an environment that has oxygen would rust.
||) |V| |^| thanks, gonna try to fix the surface problem, or maybe leave it like it is, dunno, if there will be enough time.

nice idea for the texture, but please change this white color:) I think that some very dark red could work, and I would make this thin part between front and back part also the same very dark red. Waiting for more:)

I find myself agreeing with arturro alot. A dark color would work better where the white is. It would make this look more menacing. Keep at it.

Hi again!
Mkay, this is what i think finished textures of the ship, but tell if You think theres something wrong, ok :)
Maps used: Color, Diffusion, Reflect, Spec. Level and Bump.
The reflection map is a default falloff map with fresnel type.

01-07-2005, 04:45 PM
wHAt!!!, COLOR, SPEC, BUMP, REF??!! WHERE???
I CAN DO THE SAME JUST WITH COLOR!
And why is your mesh not smooth?? why those faces???
Kaksht
01-07-2005, 05:35 PM
Darkone2652 first of all, You dont have to yell that much, this is my first time i ever textured something. And second, the maps arent so obcious cause the textures arent detailed enough (not enough time). The ship has turbosmooth applied but with the smoot result unchecked to give it angrier look. And i'm happy for You if You can do all those things just with a color map, esspecialie the spec level...

Hi Silius,
interesting sport-like design.
Speaking about textures: I suggest that you add more detail. I mean some dirt, seams in a "skin" ect.
Actually seams could be added with bumps. Darker zones could be also added on frontal edges of wings as they "suffer" more from air preassure/friction during the flight.
And overall bumping is really better to make more strong (even if is not jet much detailed)
But generally I find the ship having really strong feeling of a speed :)
wish you good working

Mkay, this is the Kurtan fighter textured. The textures arent too high quality, cause its a very small ship, trust me :)
Ok, i've used a mask material in which i've plased two brazil wax shaders to give it a nice SSS. Just painted the mask to give this kind of look. Ohh and the yeallow pats have also a dark green/yeallow luminosity color.
C&C please.

Nice light effect on the back. I understand lower texture quality due to size / distance from the camera. You gotta do what you can to make the impact you need. Keep at it!

Now ship looks better with irregularities.
Maybe you can make those lunchers on the back (lunchers, rigth?) more dark (even black).
But I have doubts that ship gets more angry look with faces than when it smoothed. I recomend to smooth your ship - beleive me it will give better result!

01-08-2005, 05:16 PM
Deryk once again thanks :) well, actualie these on the back are radars, not lauchers, so imho they dont need no darkening. And about the smooth result, gonna do a render on that, but after i'm done with the shichil cargo ship textures...

Hello everybody! :)
This is the Muhdan planet and here is the whole mess is going to be.
Man this was a though one (texturing this planet). Ive used satelite photos as reference images. The texture size is 8000x8000 px D: And my computer almost crashed down durin rendering of this one when ive rendered it in full rezolution (my pc is an old bastard: 850Mhz Athlon with 512Mb of SDRam...)
Anyways, tell me what You think about it :) C&C is what i need!

nice tests.
1. The planet texture looks really good. Giid job. But don't forget to add atmosphere and some glow behind the planet.
2. laser glow should be very, very thin. And generaly the laser shot itself should be a bit thinner.
3. The glow in the engines should be less transparent, and a bit longer(in compersion with the modelled core of the glow)
hope it helps a bit:)

so, ships are getting more and more original in design!
That Cargo and Assalut ones are really someth. off-terrain...
I like planet color as in general red-green rithm is really not bad.

Yeah thatīs a great Image.
I love your ships, and your composition / yust great.
If you like...here is some possible help.
:: Make the the sphere with the transparent Material smaller (maybe i gife you some wrong coordinates ;-) ) at the moment it looks a bit like a sphere in a glas-sphere.. if you make it just a few units larger then the Planetsphere you get the desired effekt.
:: Place the main light far behind the planet and more to the left. The Atmosphere-Material will more look like an real Atmosphere. (Thatīs the problem with this Material, it looks great when itīs lightend from behind.
:: I love your previus Planet-texture more. try to scale it down and repeat it more. (my planet-texture is just 1500x1500 pixel but i repeated it more.) Remember you need a end resolution at 3620x2200 pixel, your planet takes 30% from the whole Image, i think 2000x2000 pixel is more than enough.
I hope it helps you a bit!
Good luck & Hurry up! I whish you the best!

Ok, this is the lighting setup that ive done, think that gonna light a little bit the Kurtan Fighter in upper left side of the image. This is very low quality just to see the how everything looks, no textures are applied, just default gray materials.
Ok, gotta run render everything, cya!

Hello everyone!
The Story of todays bad things...
Man i had one crazy day today! First of all, when i woke up i thought that gonna finish the image and upload and done, BUT my hdd was making these strange sounds (the ones that it makes when a bad cluster is inside) :/ well, i couldnt load my windows and i couldnt get any info from my hard drive :/ so i had almost none hope to finish this challange, but then i remembered that i have a cd with all my images and alpha channels :D hey hey, rushed to my neighboors and now i'm almost done with the image :D
End of story.
Ok now about the image, ive added a starfield, the main sun, some lasers, bit more glow to the planet and thats for now. Still gona add more lasers from the Kurtan fighters(small green ships) and a grainy effect to make it look like a photo.
Seeya and god luck to You all!

Btw, the software that i forgot to mention is 3D Studio Max & Adobe Photoshop.
But this was my first challange and the first time that ive done something BIG like this! So dont judge me to cruel ;)
Mkay, now for the uploading to the ftp...
You can all post what You think of this image.
