This is one of the ships that will populate my scene. Its basicly going to be like a transport ship.

Here is the side view of the transport ship. Please forgive my silly looking sketches. I have never tried doing anything like this before obviously...LOL.
Ill be back with my sketch of the scene Im thinking of. BTW...is there a way to uplod multiple files into a single thread?

Hey don't worry about your drawings, if you can visualize your ideas and it helps you - it is good enough. If you have problems with perspective and stuff like that you can always make simple 3D objects, render them and use it as guide.
When you submit your images they always go to the same thread. I don't think you can submit many at once.
Good luck with the challenge!

Ok, this is what Im think about doing. The basic idea is a civilization searching for new worlds.

Thanks for replying VP! Didnt expect that so soon! And good luck to you as well. Gonna have to make the rounds and take a look at what others have cooking :).
Ok, I think I did that a little backwards. Should have done the introduction first...LOL.
Im new to these forums. Well, new to posting that is. Ive been lurking here for a while admiring the art and skills of everyone here. I wasnt going to enter this challenge because Im nowhere near the level of skills that Ive seen displayed here. But I figured that it would be fun and at the very least a learning proccess for me. Which I have to say it has allready been. Never sketched anything out before and Im amazed at how it helps to visualise what I want. Its going to make setting up the scene a breeze.
Ok, what Im thinking about for my scene title is "The Search for New Worlds". The scene will show a convoy of ships travelling through space. In there search, the group comes across beauties that are unsurpassed at every turn and realise how insignificant they are in the grand scheme of things.
Im going to be sketching out a couple more ships to go in there. Gotta have support vessels as well. Ive gotten a start on modelling the first ship and it has had some changes from the sketch. Ive also set up a simple scene to help in placement of the ships and such. Ill get those posted later tonight.
Well, thats it for now. Good luck to everyone and Im looking forward to seeing some fantasctic work coming from you all.

Here is the beginnings of one of my ships in the modeling phase. Not much to look at yet but there is still a lot of stuff to do. I went ahead and added the windows where the bridge will be to get a sense of scale.
I plan on adding lots of details to it and hopefully it will look good in the end. Texturing is where Im going to have problems. Never done them before.

Here is the basic layout for the scene. The ring around the planet will be made up of asteroids and dust. Im also planning on a nebulae of some sort in the upper left side of the pic.
This is just the beginning and things are more than likely going to change in time. But the idea will remain the same.
Ok, thats it for today. C&C will most definitely be appreciated.

Scene Sketch is very interesting drawing, and your last render is promising.:) Put more details on render.
Good luck!!!

Thanks Andreja! And good luck to you as well!
There is a lot of work to be done yet. Thankfully we have been given a lot of time to get it finished. Im still a big newbie in a lot of areas and this just gives me an excuse to learn more ;). Im not looking forward to making textures one bit...LOL. But Ill get through it and be better off for the experience Ill be gaining.
I just spent the past hour or so going over all the entries that have been submitted. Man there is a lot of talent on these forums. Its really quite intimidating. But I get the feeling that Im going to be learning a lot in this little adventure. Its going to be fun!

I think your coming along well! This is my first challenge as well, and Ive been "learning" 3d for several years now. I gotta give you props for jumping in both feet first and getting wet. I guarantee you that if you keep at it, youll learn tons from yourself and others. The sooner you can go from start to finish on a project and really stick with it, the better youll be. GOOD LUCK!

I started modeling out a nebulae for my scene. Ive got a point cloud that I am using for the base, and several nulls to give the nebulae more structure.
Not sure if Im going to go with this cause it takes so long to render. We'll see ;).

Here is a test render of the nebulae. Still needs some more work to make it look better. Needs to be more clumpy looking in my opinion.
Found Im going to have to do most of my tweaking in the actual scene. Seems that it looks a lot different there than in this pic as you will see shortly.

No anti-alaising here. Image takes forever to render without it. I can only imagine whats going to happen when I get everything set and kick the alaising up to medium.
As you can see here, the nebulae looks a lot different than the one in the pic. I dont know whats causing the brightness. There are no lights affecting the nebulae. Ill figure it out ;).
I guess it doesnt look all that bad. Would give me a reason to have more light on the ships and planet. But it still needs some more work. I think Im going to work on some more modeling on the ships for now.
Thats it for now. Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Hey, thanks Percydaman! I appreciate that!
Looking at that pic now tells me that...yeah, the nebulae needs a lot more work. Ill put it on hold for now since it takes so long to render. I was going to just map a texture of a nebulae onto a plane but I think this will work better in the end. So Ill put up with the long renders...for now.
I guess I could scale everything else in the scene down. That way I could get away with smaller particles which translates into shorter render times. Yeah...I think Ill try that. But first I need to get some more done on the ship. Plus I gotta get busy on a sketch for the other support ships that will be in the scene. Ive been working on some sketches of the first ship to kind of help me visualise the detailing that I want to put on her.
So, until then............

I decided I wanted a story of some kind. So here it is on the fly...
Global conflicts between factions using weapons of mass destruction have sent a species into turmoil. Battles so fierce that at times there didnt seem to be a place on the entire planet that wasnt scorched.
Then they come to realise that they have ruined the very planet they were fighting over. Nearly all of the natural resources have been used up. The air was full of toxins to the point of needing air purification just to survive.
They decided to put aside there differences to try and save their species. They pulled all of there resources to build a fleet of ships whos sole purpose was to sustain the entire planets population, at least whats left of it, until a new world can be found.
On their journeys they come across beauty unimaginable and realise just how small they really are and how unimportant their past conflicts were...
Ill think about this some more and see if I can come up with something a little more interesting.

Well I did a little bit more on my ship. Not much to see. Im going to hold off on posting these WIP pics until I have more to show than just a few details.
This is harder than I thought. Im having troubles coming up with details that look good. Ive deleted a bunch of things from the model that I felt didnt look like they belonged there. This is what I was left with. Its so much easier when modeling something thats allready been done. Then you have all kinds of reference material to go off of.
Ive decided that Im going to do the final scene in layers and composite them together later. That will help keep render times down. Plus it will work as my compositing milestone :).
Hopefully Ill have something a little more substantial to show next time.

• Hello there John, good job, try inserting a couple of little ships also to increase your level of detail and mybe the presence of humans would give a special touch

hi John..
welcome to the challenge and best of luck to you!
i have to say your idea is probably the best here in the challenge.. it contains very deep and very important sense.. i'll help you in your work as much as i can.. and im sure not only me.. what 3D application do you use?

Thanks for the comments guys! And best of luck to you as well :)!
Yeah humans would be a nice touch. Never modeled anything organic before so that will be another learning experience. But it would be cool to be able to see someone standing at one of the windows in the back of the ship while others are walking by behind them.
Im planning on doing some simple interiors as well as some cargo holds and shuttle bays. Just havent decided where Im going to put them yet. You'll probably never see the interiors beyond the WIP shots since the ships wont be close enough to the camera to really see inside. But since this is only my second original design, I want to give it the attention it deserves.
I would appreciate any help you guys have to offer. Lightwave is the flavor of choice for me ;).
Again, thanks for stopping in!

Have'nt had a whole lot of time to work on this in the past weeks. I ended up having some problems with my PC and lost some of the work I did on the ship. I got that back to where it was and have'nt done much since.
But I did manage to work on the nebulae some more. I think its starting to look better, it has a little depth to it now. Im still going to play with it some more.
Plus Im testing out a different layout for the scene. I like this one better than the first and it still contains all the aspects of the original scene. I think it gives me more room to play.
Still a lot of work to be done and hopefully Ill be able to devote a little more time to it in the future. Now I gotta spend some time and make the rounds to see how everyone else is comming along :).

hi John..
new composition looks much better though you might make it even better..
nebulae looks a bit artificial i think.. it lacks massiveness in my opinion..
here are few pics of nebula i made..
http://www.owntv.com/pics/mix/Nebula8.jpg
http://www.owntv.com/pics/mix/Nebula10_noStars01.jpg
http://www.owntv.com/pics/mix/Nebula10_noStars02.jpg
there are no stars.. it's just preview pictures of the shader i made in the DarkTree.. there is great plugin for LW.. SimbionLW.. this free plugin allows to use procedural materials made in DarkTree application.. if you use this plugin i can post you my shader.. the shader is very flexible.. you can totally change shape, color and density.. also it has own alpha channel so you can easily composite it.. it may look a bit complex but i can help you if you have any questions.. the best way to create good nebula (not volumetric) with this shader is assign variations to the two or three planes.. it should look like complex volumetric effect..
well.. your going very well mate.. keep it up!
cheers..

Hi John, u got a very nice perspective in your last pic, man! Looks very huuuuuge!
Hope your computer is going to "deproblemated"! As Greentek already mentioned about the nebulae, it has to be more deeper amd massive. The same with the stars, but I think there's no problem for you... Looks cool so far!
Keep it flowin', John. The best to u:)
