10-21-2004, 05:31 AM
Hello all, I'm quite eager to start this new challenge. I entered machine flesh with only like a month left in the challenge, a fresh start will be welcomed..... but my baby boy will not go to sleep, i will inform everyone of my plans within the day.
thanks, and good luck to all!!
10-21-2004, 10:12 PM
This was my initial idea, BUT... I'm not quite sure if it has to be set in space or not, on the one hand it's a monumental turning point for all mankind when a corrupt government "official" is re-elected and decides better be safe than sorry and put's in a nation wide lock down on every citizen in the country.
Only because this "official" was in power the term before made it possible for this takeover to happen.
The first step for world wide anarchy to take effect!!
over the top?
10-21-2004, 10:23 PM
like i said, i don't know if this has to be set in space, if so someone please let me know!!!
this is just the concept, there will be more, with different composition and what not but i'd like to stick with the theme.
Unless it sucks!! need info "HELP JOHNNY 5!!"
your input will be greatly appreciated, oh and there will be way more policing in the scene, whatever it turns out to be.
10-22-2004, 01:57 AM
Hey my man...nice concept...I think I need to enter this contest...but time is so short, not sure if I'm prpared to lock myself down for another 3 months of this year>>>>I have great faith in your work Ryan...Can't wait to see where you go with this ....always bigger and BaddeR righT
10-24-2004, 02:32 PM
You totally can make corporate/ political corruption futuristic! think about changing the style of the props and costumes, will future business men still be wearing the same old suit and tie? how will banking instuments change? we used to use paper checks, which are no longer trusted very much and now we use the plastic cards with magnetic strips, what materials/ technology will be next? also you can make it more sci-fi by being inventive with teh architecture.
good job, good luck!!!
10-24-2004, 02:35 PM
(i think that was supposed to be an answer to does it have to be set in space question) your character can have their feet on teh ground/ on the dock, i guess it doesnt have to be out in the middle of space...
10-24-2004, 09:19 PM
greetings hillartsympho, thanks for the info...hey that rhymes....
It will be set in the future, about two to three months from now. er maybe a couple years but you get the point, i was just curious if it had to be set somewhere other than earth.
Check on back tomorrow for an update, on my initial sketch, it's changed quite a bit.
I'm not generally a political person, but i thought with the election coming up soon, it gave it a bit of a twist, oh and im in full support of the "Tour for Change" that's going on right now with alot of the musicians in the states.
as a friend of mine said "defeat george bush in '04--he's bad for the soul" quote/unquote
10-25-2004, 10:16 AM
*deleted- accidentally repeated post below*
10-25-2004, 10:17 AM
the key guideline of the challenge is that the work should be somehow related to high science fiction/ space opera genre.
maybe reading this stuff will help you out with your theme.
and yeah, Italy's not the coolest place to be if you're an American right now... OY Europe's peaved
(studying art in rome this semester)
10-25-2004, 02:21 PM
i\\\\\\\'m gonna smash this bloody machine!!!
10-25-2004, 02:26 PM
sorry, i'm having major problems with my machine right now....
anyways...this was my next idea but it's still not what i'm looking for, it'll take me a couple days but i'm gonna go in another direction with it, i'm just trying really hard to stay away from the "our planets gonna explode, let's get the f@#k outta here" image, we'll see what happens.
this is the the last of the resistance that voted for the other guy, caught and apprehended now the new corrupt president is free to take over the world.. hahahahahahahaha!!!
let me know what you think anyways, i'd like to know
10-26-2004, 01:19 PM
Hey thanks for replying to my thread
I understand that you're not at your final idea so i'll comment on the technical drawing stuff. I really like the hard shadows on the face, it reminds me of the mike
mignola/hellboy inking style or like john van fleets illustration for Vampire rulebook covers. www.johnvanfleet.com I can't wait to see your color work and how you'll incorporate black into it.
i made a pretty major update yesterday. It would be really cool if you take a look at it... I'm trying to get some interesting discussions going about conceptualization....
10-26-2004, 01:39 PM
This is what I spent pretty much all of last night doing, I wasn't getting the feel with the whole political thing, so like I said I went in a different direction.
This is the main character in my little story, this guy's been bouncin' around in my head for a few years now, I thought himself and his fellow gods would make up some good story for this particular challenge.
10-26-2004, 03:05 PM
This is was i was trying for.... I think. Civilization, far in the future, probably close to the year, 3805. Earth long after, nuclear war, and destruction. Somewhat like the egyptians when king tut, or cleopatra were around. This civilization are strong in their beliefs of their gods, if you did not beleive, the punishment was a crime worthy of death. Brutally agonizing death! The day of reckoning has come down upon these people, where their gods have come to reward them for all their faith.....
The Unbearable Truth, is their gods have not come to reward them, but to destroy all of mankind, what little of it there is. The peoples technology far exceeds the technology of today, but they have used that technology for good, there are no weapons or ways of fighting back, the only thing the people can do is run and prey that they can find a place to hide untill the gods find somewhere else to vanquish and destroy, only there is nowhere to hide...
The unbearable truth is...they will all die.
10-27-2004, 01:15 AM
Nice...now thatZ the one !!
10-28-2004, 03:15 AM
hi Ryan.. keep it up man.. you are from the cool site - Western Canada.. so you have to do cool stuff..
cheers and best of luck in challenge!
10-29-2004, 01:57 AM
hey Ryan.. let me advise you few things:
1. do not put policy in your work..
2. you live in Canada.. what the hell business you have in US elections? leave US and its elections for americans.. with your statments about US president you just may offend some nice person who thinks otherwise.. and not only one..
3. im not a Canadian.. and would you like it if i tell you that "re-elected corrupted goverment" you are trying to conceptualize exactly exist in Canada and you successfully re-elected them last summer.. all you need for your concept art work is just to draw Paul Martin & Co. with sponsorship and stuff and you'll get quite terrific and epic picture.. :D and when you are talking about necessary changes look at your country first..
i hope now you understand what should people think when others are trying to intervene in their own business..:D
4. Ryan.. here is so wonderful theme.. Grand Space Opera.. i cant imagine more inspirational and creative thematic.. leave all that pilitical/social stuff alone and stick on something really impressive.. your an artist.. be creative..
thats all for now.. hope it helps.. keep it up and cheers..
10-29-2004, 02:21 AM
In Ryans defence..i need to say a few things....He actually is my good friend from many years ago, and a amazing artist that is working with myself and another talented individual on a rather large project. He hears my political veiws on a daily basis and feels the same way as so many of us do. This is a highly charged weem for polotics..and if you think that the outcome of the US election does not effect the workings of canada...or any other nation for that matter...you are very wrong. And as far as offending anyone...that's the beauty of free speach my friend...any one mans opinion my offend the man next to him...but he does not need to be silenced because of it. I appreciate your post and your opinion, and hope I haven't came across as "Venting" here........
Now dude...you have the conce[p]t down... keep up the updates..and gimmie a mail or talk to ya laterZ
10-29-2004, 03:03 AM
Thank you for the support essence!
Greentek, I don't think I could have said it better myself. I said before that I'm not a political person by any means. As you can see on my thread that I've completely changed my idea for Space Opera, but that is not because i'm not american, and i don't have any right to speak of the american election, that's the beauty of it I have every right to say whatever i want about anybody, freedom of speech is the first ammendment....or at least it's one of them. After a few ideas gone wrong, and not finding a way to make the idea swing is the reason I changed my mind.
One of the reasons I feel the way I do about the election (if you care) is because a certain "govt official" has banned the trade agreement between the US and Canada, not letting us export certain goods to the states, which severly hurts Canadian Revenue. But now the states are in a major flu epidemic and do not have enough vaccine to go around, and now this certain "Govt Official" is basically ordering the Canadian govt to hand over the surplus of vaccine we have here.
Now to me that's just f ' n bulls#!t!! but that's just my opinion, that really doesn't matter all that much.
So like essence said i hope this doesn't come across as a strike against you, it's just my opinion and i hope you keep following my work, as I will yours.
10-29-2004, 03:28 PM
thanks for a free speach lesson..
im sorry if i was very harsh in my statements.. sure i might be wrong.. and not only in this matter.. but im posting here solely with one aim.. to support and help if im able.. and not in any way to offend or disturb anybody..
so im waiting for further development to put my $0.02.. :D
best of luck.. and dont be so secular.. it hurts..:D
11-05-2004, 03:21 AM
wow... a heated discussion. Glad thats all settled. Now to business in the language of imagery. I think your latest concepts can be very cool, you are strong with the super hero style. Maybe thats the style for the Grand Space Opera. Great start....bring on the updates
11-09-2004, 06:50 PM
good job ryan, now let's see some more! :)
p.s. i just gotta say that i totally agree about bush (oops maybe i shouldn't have said his name) i dunno what this world is coming too.... yes martin and the liberals bite.... but they are not invading other countries or imposing world views for the sake of the almighty dollar.
11-09-2004, 07:50 PM
Is there no hope??
Interesting story and I like the irony that "doing the right thing" and working toward peace would anger the gods. But what if, through the work that they've done, the people find a replacement for and a protector against the gods of hate and violence that want to butcher them? Let's at least make it a fair fight. . . ;)
11-09-2004, 09:10 PM
That first sketch of the winged guy is great! that is a totaly radical design, kind of evil scary devil guy. Also, an interesting concept of the future.
11-10-2004, 05:55 AM
Hello, Hello; it's been some time since i've had a chance to put an update on my thread, but i've come darn near to completeing a couple peices that i will have posted in the morning~((no scanner at home))~~ unfortunatly the main peice i've been working on has nothing to do with the challenge, but i'll put it up anyway so you can see haven't been wasting all my time. It'll be posted up on our website for a better look. BUT ANYWAYSSSS......
Element5>> Thanks for the words, back in the game now, the updates should just pour in.
cpaulson>> You too, thanks for the support, updates comin at ya!
Ilikesoup>> Ilikesouptoo! I'm a little bit ahead of you on the whole protector thing, kinda one of the ideas i've been workin' on in the last week or so, there's always hope! ))I'm an optimist by the way(( ~ The glass is half way to the next roundhttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/beerchug.gif !
I originally thought of the protector when i first started this other project i am working on but that's a colab. project, not completely my idea, so i couldn't use this particular character, but he's definetly in the works.
Riencarnigotic>> Thanks, i'm really happy you likehttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif. Yeah i liked this particular sketch so much i got him tattooed on my shoulder, starting at the top of the deltoid, wrapping around the front and back and when it's done, it 'll stretch all the way down to the wrist.
Well, i'm fighting the urge to go all the way to work right now and uploading my stuff, but i'll hold off till mornin'
Keep'em comin, time to check out everybody else!!
11-10-2004, 01:22 PM
This little number would be the right hand of the devilish lookin\' fella I posted before, her name is somewhat ironic merely for the fact that she takes great pride in wipeing out entire civilizations with her bare hands.
11-10-2004, 01:25 PM
Nice :applause: ....so is that the scetch for the final line work.....has a very strong impact for sure...a good background and this picture will :buttrock:
11-10-2004, 08:49 PM
wow.. i very glad your alive Ryan so long time there was no news from you.. :D j/k
great update mate! she looks exactly like Apocalyptical Pestilence.. and reminds me Jack Nicholson's "The Joker" from the Batman.. very expressive..
keep it up mate and don't make us wait so much for updates anymore! ;)
11-10-2004, 10:31 PM
Here's that pic i was talking about, he has a little something to do with the challenge i guess, I was gonna use this guy for the protector of the people, but he fit better into our Technorganics project, so I'm using him for that, but i said i'd put him up for everyone to see.
Here you go.
11-11-2004, 08:23 AM
Hi, All my encouragement for your project to follow.... good luck...
11-13-2004, 04:16 PM
This is the refined version of the protector of the people, in their mythology, this was the beast that would be their destroyer. They did not beleive that a figure in the form of a man with wings, carrying a big pigsticker, could be someone they could trust to protect them.
As you can see he does not take on the demonic look of the gods, but really was born of the gods, but did not see the sense of destruction his brothers and sisters found in destroying civilizations, vowing to do everything he could to protect the ones his fellow gods found fit to ravage.
11-13-2004, 04:33 PM
Just a more finished idea for the final design, but i 'm probably gonna go with somethin else....hhhhhmmmmm?
11-13-2004, 05:05 PM
wow.. your sketch of Protector is excellent! great!! very strong feeling..
"Prometheus of the Future"..
keep it up mate!
11-15-2004, 05:32 AM
Thanks Greentek:buttrock: I appreciate your input, I like this guy here, I think he suits the position of kickin' the S~~t outta these demons, It might take me a bit to get a new WIP for the final line art, were still tryin to catch up at work after not having any machines for a week to get our jobs out. But I'll do my best to keep consistent. I'm tryin to learn 3D Studio Max 4 right now at the same time:eek: (the latest version my comp at home will handle, Ican't even run photoshop 7 at home, I gotta go to work to colour all my stuff) but I'm manageing.
Anywayssss.....back to the grind

12-06-2004, 04:29 PM
Looking great man...awesom style the face is looking especialy well developed....keep brushin :buttrock:
12-07-2004, 03:39 AM
I'll have another update in the morning, I had some more time today to work on the finer details of the face, however I didn't have time to upload the WIP.
Man when you don't know what you're doing it sure takes a long time!
My comp at home doesn't have the power to run photoshop, so I have to do it all at work (shh...don't tell my boss, oh wait I'm the boss! haha)
I'm not down and out though, I got the next peice of the puzzle on my desk, that should be up tomorrow as well.
12-07-2004, 10:46 PM
a little detail work to the teeth, add a scar or two, let me know what you think.
Do I suck?
12-07-2004, 10:51 PM
looking good my man...may i ask are you making sure you'r painting in layers....if so make sure evey new addition you paint is built up like layers on real skin ...veins ....tissue...skin...frecles...wrinkles...blemishes ..scars..dirt...blood...and everything else...then you can play with the opacities on the layers so to make everything blend nicly and evenly...erase a bit here to let some of that show through...get what i mean...Sure you do....photoshop painting can take some getting used to if your new to it...but it's basicaly all about layers and patience...as far as I know anyways....keep pushing man...you got fans here already...and more to come...then we've got to get back to the technorganics project...so keep it up for now...we'll talk laterX...
12-07-2004, 10:54 PM
all the detail lines in the face look cool...it's really going down a way with a style all your own...maybe copy , duplicate the layer with the line work and palce it over the painting layer...drop the opacity way down,,,almost so it's not visible...but this will give some contrast to the lines in the face you colored........hope you don't mind me sticking in my two cents...
12-07-2004, 10:56 PM
me again..hey if you finish up this whole image with this "painterly" look to it almost looks like watercolor...it realy will rock and set it's self apart from many of the other entrys....don't get discouraged....keep working dude....K i will leave you alone now.... :bounce: :bounce:
12-08-2004, 12:39 AM
Essence- No worries dude, i appreciate every bit of input i can get. I'll definetly add the touch ups in different layers, i've been working in only two layers so far, I 'll have to figure out the blending of the layers part, but i'll get it soon enough, I forgot my sketchbook at wort yesterday, but i brought it home today, ill have the line work for the oposing team done tonight and up in the morning.
Keep your eyes to the....screen?
12-09-2004, 02:26 PM
Some more work with the colour pretty close to done the face, might tweak the hair a little more.
Is there anyway to get smooth lines to draw out the tattoo, it's quite a pain trying to paint it in with just a mouse.
I think the wings will really stand out when i add the details in.
12-09-2004, 02:33 PM
The next step for the pic. I don't know if i'll use this exact pic, i don't so much like the pic but i like the pose.
12-09-2004, 02:34 PM
hi, latest post looks pretty powerful figure. I agree with another commentator above - useful to use layers in photoshop to get colour and flesh details very real. On the tattoo - there are a couple of ways to smooth it off.
- Do it really big, then scale down. The wobbbles will disappear.
- Do it by hand, and scan it in.
- Use varying shaped selections and lines in photoshop.
- design it in a vector program, like illustrator or flash and import it.
12-09-2004, 04:06 PM
bolchover- I will try that, I work in a sign shop, I will design it in my sign program, it will take me minutes, thanks i really appreciate the feedback:thumbsup:
12-10-2004, 02:08 PM
some more stuff done, tattoo, wings, eyes, highlights in hair
lots more tweakin to do though
12-10-2004, 02:23 PM
Interesting concepts. I like the female character the most, she appears well established in the sense of personality. :)
12-11-2004, 01:09 AM
Thanks AirbORn! She's one of my favorites as well, there's 5 gods in total not including the guy I'm working on now(Truth)
5) Joy (Female)
The good guy is Truth, the others would not be satisfied with protecting and watching over the civilizations they had sworn to protect. (Why serve in heaven when you can rule in hell sorta deal) That is also why the others take on the form they are, and not human like Truth, after making the desicion to turn against what was right, they instantly were evolved into the demonic snake things they are now.
They will all be in the finished product, along with a few hundred of the people that consist of the civilization Truth is fighting to protect against the other Gods.
So lots of work to do, better get back to it...tick...tock...tick...tock:twisted:
12-11-2004, 01:41 AM
Ryan, thanks for your comment on my page, I appreciate every one!
I'd have to disagree with Essence on his comment about painting in PS. Layers are simply a tool in the box that is digital painting. They should not be used for everything. Blackarts (the winner of the previous machineflessh challenge and currently doing some amazing work for this one) only uses a single layer while he paints, and he makes incredible stuff. Sure, layers should be mastered, but tricks and tools are only learned to be used when the situation calls for it, and just because it is digital painting does not mean layers are called for. I would actually limit yourself so you don't start depending on them like many other artist already have. Maine objects like figures, buildings, vehicles or skies, sure, probably a smart thing to use layers, but even those things could be composed on a single layer (what have traditional artists been doing for the past thousand years?) I use layers for these things most of the time, but I'm limiting myself as well. But for something as simply as skin, I think it would better your understanding of color and how skin works to use one layer. You'll have yourself in knots by the end if you use layers for the simple things like this!
You seem to have an issue myself and the majority of artists out there have when dealing with skin. You're skins a little too peachy yellow, and your lowlights are simply brown, with no in between. Below I have a few tutorials on these issues by Steven Stahlberg (featured on the cover of Expose 1) He pretty much paints an entire scene that he is going to later turn into 3D. It's kind of pointless, because his 2D work looks every bit as real as his 3D work, but, hey, it's his process. Anyway, that to say, he's good and knows figure and form. What your missing is the transition in the skin. As you'll read in these tutorials, the skin itself is actually a very transparant material. What we are seeing in the color of our skin (in the absense of highlights) is the diffused (by our skin) color of our blood. Even more so in the fall off of a lit area of skin (say when one side of an arm is lit up and the other side isn't) The color of the transition of these two areas of the skin will but a much more saturated color. The highlight might be a light, unsaturated pink or tan, the shadow might be a darker less saturated brown or red, but the in between will be a semi-vibrant reddish, because this is where we have the clearest window to our blood, beeing lit up from the highlight. I don't make much sense, but Stahlberg does, so here's the link. It's referring to 3D, but that will help you, as I think you might be thinking about the figures you draw too much in a 2D sense (i have the same problem)
Skin Tutorial (http://www.androidblues.com/shadetut.html)
and put into application
painting tutorial (http://www.androidblues.com/JealousyStepbystep/jealousystep.html) - This is an excellent tutorial, I would recommend reading both of these completely through. It gives you a whole new understanding on human flesh and painting in general
best of luck, take care, and thanks again
12-11-2004, 02:50 AM
That's great, now that's what i call a reply, Thanks Steve!!
I'm gonna check out those tutorials as soon as i finish here. I totally understand what you mean about the layers, I do like using layers, but only when i have to. I had to for the tattoo, because i designed it in a different program, plus i like the fact that i can play with how dark it shows up on the skin. If you're referring to the colour in the face, after i do this read through, things might change, hell i'm not even close to done yet the whole thing might change. As for the layers, i'm gonna try to stick with creating a new layer when i add the next character, and the background will probably be on a seperate layer as well. I am new to photoshop, so I'm also trying to learn the aspects of the big picture.
Appreciate the feedback, thanks again.
12-11-2004, 02:07 PM
The dominant figure of those that opose Truth and the civilizations he massacre's for pure unadulterated pleasure...
12-11-2004, 02:16 PM
HAHA! No ears!
oops, I didn't do that on purpose, seriously!! HAHAHAHAHA...I just noticed now.
Sorry J, I really didn't do that on purpose...HAHAHAHA!
(see essencedesign's thread in the 3d forum if you're wondering why I find this so funny)
12-13-2004, 05:25 PM
My buddy did this last week while he was bored, it looks kinda cool, so i thought i would share
This won't be in the final image

Not alot done on this but it's started anyway. At this point any progress is good progress!
I'm trying something different that Essence Design and Steve Newport led me on to that i'm finding WAY EASIER, thanks a ton guy's, doing all the black and white first, then i'll probably throw the colour in another layer and mix. I still want to try adding the colour in on this layer but because we have so little time left i might have to do it in layers, and experiment later.
Onions and ogres have layers, it can't be that bad!

If you are going the monochrome route, try starting by blocking in with some very dark values first, and slowly work your way up to the midtones, then the highlights. You'll find it's easier to visualize the light falling on your object this way.
Don't worry about the details at the beggining, just try to achieve a nice rythm of light and dark.
12-13-2004, 09:01 PM
Keep up the good progress mate... best of luck to you.
12-13-2004, 09:52 PM
I would have to agree with what BlackArts has said...at first just try and get a good balance and contrast of your overall coloring...the zoom in onto your specific areas and go nuts with detailZ....keep in up canuK
12-14-2004, 12:44 AM
JezzArts- Thanks for the support, it's you guys that keep me motivated...well I guess a shot at winning that Boxx Workstation might have a little to do with it too.:D
BlackArts & Essencedesign-Thanks alot guys i will definetly keep that in mind as my progress rolls on here. Right now i'm trying to get the bulk of it all under wraps, I still have all the civilizationers and a background to add, you can see that my lightsources for Truth and Joy are coming from different locations, and the lightsource for Pain once i start his colour will come from somewhere else as well probably. As soon as i get all the forground characters done up i can decide where my final lightsource will come from, then i can tweak in what shadows and highlights that will be necessary. It might be kinda ass backwards to you guys but remember i'm still learning. I'll throw up a composite once i have all my chickens in the same basket.
What is it now 37 days and counting....tick.....tock....tick....tock!
I think i'll have the next three nights available to stay at work and grind out some finished product, or a portion of it anyway!
Cheers, and thanks again guys!!
12-14-2004, 09:23 PM
A little more done, I'll be back later with a little more of a finished product.
12-14-2004, 11:09 PM
with wings, will add highlights to make them stand out more after.
How's that for a monochrome base? (Blackarts/Essence Design) Good enough start adding colour and details?
Let me know
12-15-2004, 11:21 PM
Colour/ no details, a little bit in the face but not done yet
12-18-2004, 03:22 PM
there is a very nice idea standing behind all this, and i think that u could bring everything to a higher level with using less smudge tool at ur coloring proces. Use strong colors, lots of colors, and dont use a white background when u r coloring. It brings that too bright feeling to a pic with some white spots... green part of ur last submission for an example. Otherwise keep up the good work! Its promissing. :)
12-19-2004, 01:23 AM
hair looks great on that babe...wings are sexy on a woman..also 10 inch talons....mmmm....Looking great dudue...just keep on going...you are developing a style for yourself....and when it all comes together it's gonna be great.....
12-25-2004, 04:47 AM

12-27-2004, 01:26 PM
HAHAHAHA! I just read the post i left over the holidays, I must have been pretty smashed! That's hilarious!
But i guess this means the holidays are over, and it's time to get back to it!! Gonna need all the time i can get.
NinjaASSN- Thanks for the input there! I'm still trying to learn the quirks and corners of photoshop. So far the smudge tool has been my best friend, if you have any tips for me, they would be greatly appreciated. I'll need to converse with a couple of my fellow artists to see if they can help me at all.
Essencedesign- Hey J! Hit the jackpot eh!! That's what i'm thinking, too. it's not much now but when i add in the pepes and the other gods, i'm hoping it all comes together.
did you call me...dudoo? lol, that's great!! ttys
12-27-2004, 02:06 PM
Hey my man,,,,I've actually tryed callin a couple times lately,,,not sure if I'm gettin the # right though.....anyways lets get this thing into high gear dude.....don't worry we'll get a chance to take on vegas...get chris down there 2...
12-27-2004, 02:48 PM
Any help u need is here :) Just tell me what for did u use that smudge tool untill now? Just for smoothering the color edges? Instead of that, use one main color and than color it over with another color, but with less opacy. Or use a larger palette of colors to make the gradient. With that procedure u make a stronger piece, with more define shapes and textures.. not so blurry on parts that shouldnt be :) But ofcourse dont completely forget about smudge tool... it is very helpfull tool, just on right places and in right amount of using it. Good luck!
12-27-2004, 10:32 PM
the beginning of this dude, gonna take NinjaAssn's advice and try useing more colours instead of smudge, don't get me wrong though, smudging rules!!
12-28-2004, 10:26 PM
just a quick post...
not near finished.
12-29-2004, 02:04 PM
detail in the face
12-30-2004, 10:47 PM
close to adding this guy to the final comp, which i should have up soon, hopefully in a couple days.
12-30-2004, 10:49 PM
I just noticed his right arm is a little longer than his left, I'll have to fix that:shrug: .
12-30-2004, 11:33 PM
Hey he's looking extra bad ass my man....love the chice of color for the "tunik" (it's not a dress i know  )
12-31-2004, 02:31 PM
Finally a quick idea of what the composition is gonna look like, I still need to add Pain, finish Joy's wings and a whole bunch of other crap!!
Jeeeez... I'm soo gonna run out of time..eeeeeeeeeeepppppppppp!!!!
12-31-2004, 10:11 PM
My last submission for 2004, wow, that's pretty crazy...
Happy new Year everyone, let it be a safe one!!
and thanks to everyone that's helped me on my path to cgness!!
01-04-2005, 02:06 PM
Well here's where i'm at so far with less than 2 weeks to go. Like my hurtin' attempt at fire, I think I'm in trouble, i guess i'll just keep pluggin, see what happens. trial and error right?
I'm sure ill at least finish this time.
it may not be perfect but it'll be done.
If anyones got any tips on creating a decent background for an amateur, please don't hesitate to let me know.
01-06-2005, 04:35 PM
Still trying to get this right, any tips for backgrounds.......?????
01-09-2005, 06:50 PM
Sad to say, but i 'm not gonna get this challenge finished to my liking, or anyone else's for that matter. I'll do waht I can before the end of the week, but my limited skills in photoshop aren't gonna allow me to have the time to get everything the way i want it.
There's supposed to be a group of 10 or so civilians just under the two demons, that i haven't even started yet, not to mention there's still three more demons to be added to the scene in the background, and then there's the whole background issue:cry: .
my computer at home like i said before, won't allow me to carry the programs needed to work on this at home, and seeing as i spend 12 plus hours a day at work already, it's pretty hard to go back on my days off to work on this. guess im just not dedicated enough yet.
My mind has also been trailing back towards, essence designs, and my technorganics project.
I should be aquiring a new system at home to carry lightwave, so i'll probably be devoting my time to learning that, We have a very busy year ahead of us trying to get this project off the ground. I think we're all a little bored with the 9 - 5 deal and need to be doing something we really love!
So anyways... thanks to every one for your support, and all the best of luck to everyone else who has entered this challenge. I can't wait to see who wins!!
I'm not giving up, just think of it as accepting defeat!
01-09-2005, 07:04 PM
You have made huge leaps in your understndings of digital painting...it dosen't come over nite unfortunatly...but here's what I suggest here....bring all of the characters you have painted so far closer together....shrink your over all aspect and ratio and go for a more close up look at these characters...you've doen a great job painting in their details and they would make a scene themselves...try it dude you might be suprised what happens.....yea we will be back to "work" here after this is all finished.....
...been great working with you here on this though....
don't give up yet....
01-10-2005, 04:02 AM
Essence- Thanks for keeping the heart pumping there man, I'll try that for sure. I do still have a whole week left. I'm sure i can make something happen, definetly not giving up, it just won't be what i had pictured it to look like, I said i will finish, and it may look like a two year old did it, but it will be finished.
Still taking in advice for photoshop, general advice, tips, whatever you got. Just cause the challenge is over doesn't mean I'm gonna stop learning, that would be a crime against humanity!!
01-10-2005, 05:16 AM
I would put some battle like action in the background slightly blurred. Maybe, some energy blasts hiting things and some debris flying out. Anyway, keep at it Ryan you can do it! Follow Essence's suggestions he is right on!
01-10-2005, 01:45 PM
Took J's advice, downsized a whole lot, just pump out some fine details add a few more scared civilians in the back.
I think it might just work.
cc's please, not that bad is it?
01-10-2005, 02:18 PM
Better....much better....I think you know it...
01-12-2005, 02:10 PM
Well, this is probably more or less it. Not exactly what I was going for, but it's my entry, and it's finished, that alone is an accomplishment in my mind. I'll still probably tweak some details here and there.
Thanks to everybody that encouraged me to keep going and push through to get this done, and everybody who didn't, it was everybody's work that inspired me to go on. Everybody here are tremendously creative and great artists, I wish each and every one of you the best in the future and look forward to seeing you in the next challenge.
P.S. I think the real "Unbearable Truth" for me is, I have alot to learn.
01-12-2005, 03:16 PM
Well done Ryan, you should feel proud of yourself. Even finishing a three month project is an achievement! I think you've got some very solid drawing skills which are evident from your sketching, and you just need to find your way into being able to do them justice in photoshop. When I first started out in photoshop two years ago, I kind of knew what I wanted to produce but I got so frustrated because I couldn't make the tools do what I want. Since then, after a lot of careful observing, reading the forums, seeking advice, I'm finally starting to be able to make photoshop work for me rather than having to fight it!
You have exactly the right attitude, I'll look forward to seeing you in the next challenge where I'm sure you'll surprise yourself at how you've improved. And anyone who feels they don't have a lot to learn about art and painting is kidding themselves! Take care...
01-13-2005, 12:16 AM
Thanks alot Jesse, your praise means alot to me.
Hopefully with some practice I can get better. Your entry is outstanding, and should definetly be a candidate for winner!!
Cheers, thanks for the support.:bounce: :buttrock:
01-13-2005, 07:33 PM
good work mate! yeah, keep practicing and learning, I think that's our purpose here!
about your image, I would try to darken the ground, specially the right-bottom corner to make its "emptiness" less visible...it's an idea, I don't know if it's a good one or a bad one, hehe
see you around!
01-14-2005, 10:48 PM
elmasfeo- Iknow what you're saying, about the emptiness, it's very out there and obvious, but i'm now 300 km's away from my machine untill sunday night so i have no way of fixing or touching up anything. I'm gonna jump on it sunday night or monday morning, before i upload the final image probably spend a few hours if i can playing with a few things. Darkening the void is probably the best, i appreciate your input, iprobably would have left it and worked more on the finer details, which bi will do as well
 thanks again!!
01-17-2005, 01:44 PM
This is the 150kb jpeg image, i'm not sure how to upload the tiff, please help!!
01-17-2005, 01:51 PM
Hit "upload final image" under the challenge page, log in and a pretty good guide follows... I take that you have a program you can use to upload?
01-17-2005, 01:53 PM
What kind of program do I need, bear with me this is my first time:shrug:
01-17-2005, 02:01 PM
Well I use Cute FTP... think you can download a trial version for 30 days...
01-17-2005, 02:01 PM
good work, interesting take on the topic and the poses are nice. find a free ftp program off the web, i use coffee cup software ftp. then use that and follow the steps on the upload final image page. good luck
01-17-2005, 04:37 PM
I got an uploading program and followed the instructions, and the program says that the image has sucessfully been uploaded, but my thread says that i haven't done it yet.....
01-17-2005, 05:50 PM
mmm... not sure if it will help, but here is what I did, I cannot tell you anything apart from this:
I used windows explorer, writing in the address bar ftp://blablabla(hostname), and then I dragged my file there, and it seem to have worked... but maybe the problem you have is that you have uploaded it correctly and you don't know it... maybe you already know this, but to view your submitted entry you'll have to go to the "submit final entry" page again, pass through the 3 steps where they ask you things, and in the third one, below the ftp connection data, there should be a thumbnail of your image...
01-17-2005, 06:00 PM
Griphon, conundrum, and elmasfeo- I just phoned my buddy essencedesign i nthe states and he said if the server told me that it was completed successfully, it's probably there, the moderators just have to view it and then they'll send me an email letting me know it's there.
Thanks fo the help though guys, I'm gonna keep an eye on it to make sure, but if it doesn't work I'll try your way elmasfeo.
01-18-2005, 09:58 AM
Hope it worked out :)
01-18-2005, 01:56 PM
Guess I could retell the story to go with my little picture here eh?
The Unbearable Truth....
A civilization of people, long after nuclear war and the most horendous disdisasters the world had ever seen. Around the year 3085. Life again began to grow on this once lush beautiful planet. These people were determined to repopulate the human race, not without their beliefs however.
These people had strong beliefs in their faith of God, but not like the God we know. There were 5 Gods to worship in their minds:
These gods were to be their saviors and help replenish life on their new born planet.
Little did the people know..."The Unbearable Truth"
These Gods were only to return to wipe out life on this fresh new planet and keep it for themselves...
However, the fight for the planet would not be so easily won.
There was one god that the people did not know about...Truth, he would come to avenge the people and fight to destroy these gods that caused such horrible torment on the people, Truth was the true savior, and to keep his Brother's and sister from destroying what would ever be left of mankind, he would die before he ever allowed that to happen.
Thanks for checkin out my shizzle. I appreciate all the support and help from everyone, and look forward to seeing all of you again in the next challenge.
Good Luck to everybody!!
01-18-2005, 02:07 PM
Sorry for being such a pain, but I still can't seem to upload this file;
01-21-2005, 06:47 AM
