This is a little warm-up excercise to get into drawiing the city stuff.

The final piece will likely be a vast cityscape being bombarded as the heroes make a desperate escape. I will probably compose it at 2.35:1 cinema aspect (even though the resolution will be print size).

hi,
nice concept, i'd really like to see more of details of your city, it seems to have so many thigs but it's not clear for the moment, are you gonna keep that dark mood in your composition because it looks good... keep it up

Thanks, cipher! Yeah, I think I'm leaning more toward a dark and gothic future at this point. This was just a quick rough to get things going, but there should be more detailed things to come.

Here are some more roughs I did to flesh out the story a little. I think there should be a young mother with a baby wrapped in a blanket trying to flee the city as it's being bombed. Maybe he's the prince or future Emperor or something.

I do rather like that first concept sketch :)

I really do like that first sketch you made. The vertical format really gives your city scale. The other sketches all feel a little too traditional. The first one gets my vote ;)

I also would give my vote to the first one.

Okay, you all talked me into it. I decided to go with the half-page vertcal format since that seemed to be the most popular composition.

Here are some more thumbnail sketches of how the scene may play out, The young mother desperately tries to flee the devastation with her infant, the heir to the Empire, as the insurgents attack.

Awesome - very cool concept work.

I think that the 3 pane vertical composition is the more interesting of the ideas suggested so far. I'd personally stick with that one. Interesting idea that the future of a particular nation lies in the hands of one person.

I think the best of your concepts is the first one... Why not you put color on it?

Wise choice Patrick ! ;)
About your sketches, favorites is the 3rd one, like the deep that you feel in this kind of image, a bit like your 1st one, we really feel the infinity...

About the 2nd i like the idea but you should make the mother and his children in some actions... like she's hidden to protect herself or she's running to escape... just ideas...

Hope we'll see more

the first sketch is really my favorite, it gives a good sight of this town. The second one of the second set is fine also, perhaps too "traditional" as wiro said. The last set joins your goal but there are really too closed, open a bit the sight to the city and it think it will be great. I vote for the first at the moment :D
