Luis Nuñez de Castro has entered the Grand Space Opera 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=4334)

Latest Update: Final Image: Final image!
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4334/4334_1105990645_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/6/4334/4334_1105990645_large.jpg)

My final image! I put in it some texture to give more noise to the image (cleany images aren't epic!) and I did some little color change (more saturation). I put a bit of movement blur in some parts of the image, and lightened the upper third of the image to focus the attention on the ship of the close-up. I hope you like it.

This is my first concept sketch: the idea is that in this region of the space the spaceships there been fighting for years without interruption, and because of that there's a lot of destroyed spacecrafts and space garbage, in which contenders have hide bases and harbours. Down are soldiers in spacesuits, maybe they're going to rescue a damaged spaceship or maybe they are running away from their shelter.

I really like this concept, it has great potential. The image is very pleasing to the eye, even though there's a lot going on (which is good, seeming as it's suposed to represent something on a large scale).

The idea behind the image interests me, almost like an area where you can see a lot of history, because all the destroyed spacecraft will have something personal about them I guess.

Anyway, good luck, and I look forward to seeing this idea develop.

From that picture I imagine a universe that lives on the edge of a black hole... always being swirled around and slowly pulled in... at a slow rate however, where new ships and life and garbage is always adding to it so that the trail never ends no matter how much vanishes... a natural selection of removal of that which is no longer needed in the cirlce of the life cycle that is. i think that the picutre really has great movement, i love being able to have a scene to look at the draws the eye in a specific manner, can be the most important aspect of a work of art. great job. keep it coming.

The same idea but closely to the battlefront... Actually I don't like this one.

Saludos y buena suerte en esta competencia!! Me sorprendo por la cantidad de de latino Americanos estan aqui!!

Well, i can see why you dont like the second one, it is a little confusing.

The concept of a wreckage yard of defeated armies in space is rahter intersting. In fact, for specific ref. I would recommend that you check out the game FREELANCER by Micorsoft. In it ( in kyoto space area ) they have an neublea full of derelict spacecraft. It is a VERY good guide to some of the stuff you are doing.

Buena suerte.

I much prefer the first idea, it's more original, more interesting, and has more history behind it also.

I'd also recommend you take a look at freelancer, not only is it a good game, but it would serve as quite a good reference for your idea.

I look forward to seeing your idea (hopefully no. 1) develop.

LuisNCT

Well, I see that the first idea is best and I'll pay attention to your advice of see Freelancer game. Anyway I'll try to do an approaching between the first idea and a space battlefront.

Here are more sketches based in the same idea that the first one, but trying different approaches and searching for a palette as well as testing vertical composition.
I'll try to do a more into-the-action picture.

I like 3rd wave of your sketches but they look like part of larger entity.I must say i like every of your sketches.Because you look like very ethutiastic in improving your idea,my suggestion is:Why don't you improve your first idea it's very very good, ligting and everything else invokes very meditative feeling in me,instead of addiction of more tense to action displayed by you.Don't get me wrong. As i said,i like every piece of your work, espetially your working with lights nd space, but i agree with others that your first idea is your best idea.Good luck.

In my opinion the horizontal composition works best - the original composition is very eye pleasing, and interesting.

I'd very much like to see that original idea done with the vibrant colours of these further developments, that'd really begin to show what the final image may look like.

I really like the idea of the first concept, especially with the people walking on a platform into what appears to be nowhere - very cool indeed.

There's a hidden base in which the ships are repared and reloaded. In the background are the explosions of the big battle between motherships, frigates, and interceptors.

I see that you all likes more the first sketch, but I'm not sure yet about the idea. Maybe I'll test some composition in the orbit of a planet, or a battleground, cityscape... If I have enough time, of course!

everyone likes first sketch because there is clear composition.. from other pictures it's difficult to understand cos of a lot of smoke i think.. your drawing skills are quite good so you can prepare few more test sketches..

This is a first concept sketch for the spacesuits of the astronauts. Maybe I'll put some enemy astronaut too. An assault scene or something like that. In that case I think that the attackers will be alien-breed.

Another concept sketch, this time done in painter. The true is that I'm still not work well in painter cause I ever work with photoshop, but I'll keep trying to use painter cause its big possibilities...
Well, this sketch idea is the same of the previous: there's hidden bases in the asteroids fields and in this case enemy ships have approached two much.

Veeery dinamic, it`s awesome. More ships maybe? I`m just curious about the
white blobs in the lower corner ? Is it some sort of nebula ?

LuisNCT
11-14-2004, 01:01 PM
Ganthu: The white blobs in all the concepts from first to that last are big explosions of the distant battle between the spacefleets. I have to do some nearby study of this explosions whom probably post here today.

New idea, new story: A space elevator, which joins the planet surface with station in orbit, is being attacked by the enemy. Of course this is a first concept of that idea and still there's absence of more spaceships, explosions, etc.

Hmm - the space elevator idea is pretty cool. I think it could be a very good piece, with loads of space fighting - huge buildings (the elevator)... very cool indeed.

I prefer the landscape orientation to the portrait myself, I feel it just works a lot better, especially as the action will be able to be seen better too.

It'll be interesting to see this develop,

good luck.

You are flushing out some very interesting images. I like your approach - laying down alot of different scenarios in rough. Giving yourself a wide range of options to choose from. Keep up the good work!

SteveNewport

Luis, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment on my page, thank you!

As for yours, I really admire you're posting every sketch of the process, it's very interesting to follow your flow of ideas. As some painting professors are a big candidate on 'drawing with paint' I feel it is very necessary sometimes to 'write' with the paint such as you are doing now I believe! however, I think it would be worth your while to put some more thought into the story through words. Start thinking about it in between work or something. I carry a mini sketchboon anywhere I go and for me, at the beginning of this challenge, it helped for me to write down the evolution of my story and the imagery I saw as it was coming to me. Developing a story will naturally lead to something you're passionate about and imagery will just flow out of your mind.
You're coming up with some good starter stories, but choose one and develop every aspect you can about it.

Black hole. Do some research into black holes, see what type of setting is around them. I think you need to have more stars in the idea. With black holes, everything in the vicinity is being suck into it, that woud, I think, gather millions of stars into this vortex which would give you some fantastic imagery opportunities. Something really beautiful that is actually a very powerful thing which is the backdrop for a big battle.

The elevator. Take into consideration that planets orbit and move in space. Unless a planet was orbiting at the exact same speed and direction as another, an elevator connected between the two would rip apart! But still see how you can develop this.

As for 3D, you're more finished sketches show you have no need for 3D at all, you seem to have a grasp on rendering in 2D. If you have the same problem as I do, it's just hard for me to focus too much on one sketch to get enough detail in there to describe what I'm doing. I need to finish it really quickly, I just want to get it done, and to put more time into detail is just frusterating for quick sketches. But, althought 3D is very useful, and it wouldn't hurt to take advantage of it, I think that you might underestimate yourself!

Good luck, look forward to your process!
take care

oh yea, I read that you're looking at nebula's for referance, I am too.

I downloaded this document a while ago from a really great space artist, Greg Martin. It's a pdf with great compilation of space images by hubble and other artists and links to their sites. It's about a 14 page long article explaining his passion of space, the beauty and mystery in it, just different aspects hoping to encourage and inspire the reader. I would highly recommend reading it, it gives you a new perspective on things

here's a link to the download, let me know if it doesn't work and I'll try to find some way to get it to you!

3D design of the spacestation in wich the spaceelevator is anchored. The idea of the space elevator and its scientific viability are extracted from Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.
I'll post soon the more explained story that I want to tell

Wow those two links are amazing, It's awe inspiring to think that the nasa imagery is real photography, that just blows my mind!

The 3d concept for the spacestation is very interesting, looking forward to see how this develops into 2d, and then how details are added.

It would also be interesting to read the passage of text (from the mars trillogy) that inspired the elevator idea.

Very cool updates - the ships look awesome (the alien ship seems to have a direct inspiration from the film 'alien' IMO, seems to be the shape of the alien's head, lol).

LuisNCT
11-22-2004, 01:41 PM
Stevetwist: because I'm reading Mars trilogy in spanish, will be so hard for me translate the passage into english in order to post here, but searching in the google "space elevator" you can read about it in a lot of sites. Here is one: http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/space_elevator_020327-1.html

And about the development of my design of the space elevator from sketch to 3D, I have to say that I don't began to model with the sketch as reference but I did it improvising with my little knowledge of 3Dmax.

And yes, the alien ship is too alienhead-like, I realized it after finishing the sketch

stevetwist

Yeah, but being "Alien Head" like is very very cool (just a little unoriginal) - it does look awesome though, something to develop in the future, if not for this contest.

Thanks for the link also - I'll give it a read.

Hola Luis!
I've finally decided to post some comments on your work, jeje
the elevator model looks good, it could be a great scenario for a battle...(and the asteroids field idea was also looking good)...I've read something similar in "3001-Final Odissey" (the continuation of 2001), where there was some kind of artificial ring around the Earth, connected to it by 4 or 5 giant towers/elevators...
The ships are looking very good, what about some side fins to avoid the alien-head look? not that I have nothing against it..., anyway, good luck with it, I'll check this thread!

LuisNCT
11-23-2004, 10:37 PM
Thanx you all. I have to redefine my idea and write it in form of story... Probably the final idea will be a mix between the first one (those of the space garbage) and the space-elevator one.

Hi Luis. I like yous ideas a lot! I agree with some people who think it could work a mix of the two ideas: the garbage battleground and the space elevator battle. I like your idea of putting it in the dark side of the planet. It will add it more suspense. When you talk about space garbage I think in "Memories", a movie of Katsuiro Otomo. More exactly in the first tale of it. It can be inspiring. The space elevator is getting more interesting everytime with your 3D render. I think that in Redcolony.com could be some information about it since they are all fans of Mars colonization and (of course) Stanley Robinson. (Im a fan of him too) Good luck!!!

A study for a coast city see from orbit.
Later I'll add more detail to the city, ships attacking it and explosions. That study serves me for the space-elevator scene too (if finally do it)

stevetwist
11-27-2004, 04:54 PM
I personally think the space elevator idea (if done that there's a battle arround this grand structure) is the best so far, both in fitting the bill of 'grand space opera' and also just as an idea in its self.

I like the 2nd to last image, but I feel that it's not as original as your other idea.

The city/coast study looks promising, and the text below it could make that piece epic and grand... if there are loads of ships attacking this bay or whatever, then that's much better than a piece where just one ship attacks the bay.

Whatever direction you take it in, I think the more ships, and the darker the piece (as in colours, not mood), probably the better it will fit with the idea of Grand Space Opera.

Arctis
11-27-2004, 06:30 PM
I really like that start : it can be interesting to introduce in your final comp something that is not exclusively science fiction, like the coast.
I think the battle - if there is one - should not be too crowded, in order to see the background.
I'll come back to see more...

Including the elevator idea would be very cool.

Closer ship is a 100% must IMO.

Yess, I'll add a closer ship in the next shot (which I haven't did yet... I have not much time recently)

I do agree with the orientation of the focal point and composition of the image.

I can't help but feel that the colour scheme is coming together and gathering more conviction in terms of saturation. Are you planning to continuing this style towards your final piece or are you keep it light and closer to the pastel specturm?

Very nice color scheme:applause: Some points to consider: Large capital ships at varying altitudes, gotta have those in a space opera and water reflections below too! Great job so far!!!

Looks promising, I think you have a great composition, but once more detail is put into this piece it will really shine and more detailed critiques will be flowing your way :)

Thanx you all for your comments...
I'll put more ships and details in the final composition, of course. And about colour, I think that my final palette will be like my last shot one, cause my previous concepts maybe are too much colorful.
(I promise you that I post the final concept soon)

That's looking good, Luis! I like the colors in your last piece the best, so I'm happy to hear that you'll be sticking with them... but then, they fit that particular concept piece where they wouldn't have fit some of the earlier ones.

Oh, speaking of earlier ones, I really liked the spaceship doodle you had in post#10/sketch#2. If you add more spaceships to your scene, that was a cool one. I think the elevator idea is neat, too, and wish you good luck with it. Can't wait to see more...!

I'm in the final stage of the concept phase. In this one still missing the explosions and the ships attacking the space elevator. I have to test the same scene but with the sun lightning the closest side of the planet.

Thanx Mike (Walrus), when you talk about the spaceship... Which one refers you? the alien one or the previous. I say that because I have a lack of control with my posts...

And now for something completely diferent:
First I have to say that in an illustration I think is more important that it talks by itself instead of being together with a explaining text. Don’t matter the audience don’t understand in detail the action, but the significant is communicate him the sensation of viewing a scene, a place... But as lot of you give more importance to the wrote narration, here I go:

The final scene will represent the attack to the space elevator which joins the orbit with the planet surface, and it’s used as link to send troops, ship pieces for construct them, etc. So that station its being attacked by the enemy for cutting those supplies. All that happen in a many-fronts war with simultaneous battles in the orbit and the planet surface.

Attackers are revolutionary forces of the colonies that try to make independent from the imperialist control. So that their ships will be more rudimentary...

Well, I hope you like it, and sorry for my poor english.

sorry for the late reply, things have got a little hectic my end.... looks stunning - the concept is really cool, and the dark colours give it a quite menacing feel - very impressive.

I like what you say about a picture standing for itself, and being understood without any extra text - it's very true indeed, and something I fear about my piece (that you can't gather what's going on without the description below it).

Anyway, looking forward to seeing all the action put in (ships attacking etc.) and then seeing it turn from concept into realisation - good luck.

Hi Luis. I agree with you in saying the image must talk by itself, but since this is a challenge I have imagine it all the time like a classroom where everybody know the advance of the others since the beginning, so I can't imagina ourselves as public but more as classmates. About the image I like the colors a lot. I was one who prefer your idea of putting the elevator in the dark side of the planet but now I'm seeing that the strecuture looks to dark there. Also I think it's perspective is too strong so we can't see much of it. I sugest to move it somewhere we could see more of the long cable. Keep going!!

Luis -

To be specific, on page one of this thread, the post labelled #10. It's the main ship in the second of the threee sketches ganged together there. Hope that helps!

And i like your space elevator concept!

Its interesting that you did the ships in the foreground in 3d and the planet in paint, but maybe the hard edges of the ships and the sketchy, "painterly" treatment of the earth are too different. maybe thighten up teh painted earth and if the ships are flattened/ rasterized yu can paint on them a bit, using the model as an underpainting.

good job sof far!

Thanx guys for your opinions. I already have in mind the final composition... I follow kaparo's advice of showing more cable, and the composition will have more empty space. I still have to design the two factions ships, but I think I'll post the final concepts and the line artwork all at the same time, I hope will be tomorow.

Here goes my final concept. I have to define the ships design and the colors of the lighttails. Probably will be some changes for the linework, but the idea is that.
The spectator will see ship battle and the spacestation being attacked in the background. Maybe will be some explosions in the planet surface. I think the color palette will be the same in the final piece but maybe I'll do some changes(I'm thinking to doa snow covered planet surface)

All of your sketches look really good, although this recent one is lacking at dynamic edge of the others. I think the ships and the space station are too close in size, although this is very preliminary, so I'm sure you have something in mind. Also, I'd love to see this in a hazy light. Sort of if we are at the edge of a hazy atmosphere, and can make out both the planet below and stars above just vaguely. Just a thought. Keep going with it. It's turning into a great thread.

I post that cause I think I have to explain a little about that ship:
The ship is from the planet faction, the defenders of the space-elevator. Cause of that it's more advanced than the rebels' ships. It's cab and the rest of the ship rotate to give the pilot the better vision of the enemy in all moment, and in the back it have a semicircunference arch of engines which can impulse the ship in whatever direction (it can flight laterally for example)

Three ways of coloring the same drawing... I think that the third will be the chosen one.
painter and photoshop.

First I'm doing the planet surface, the background. I'll add more detail to it when I begin to work in the rest of the image.

I made some little changes in the background, which I think I don't work more cause it isn't the point of attention. I'm working now in the ships of the close-up, but still have a lot of work.

Great artwork - your use of artist oils brushes and distort have worked really well. I like the way you've let the brush just flow and form the coastlines of the land masses - really nice.

I reckon that if you begin playing around with colour and contrasts, you will be able to make those foreground elements stand out much more. Maybe by desaturating the background colours of the land would work (or adding more atmospherics behind them).

Also, pulling the elements a touch closer together might hold them in the viewers attention that bit longer.

Overall it's looking really nice - keep going

My final image! I put in it some texture to give more noise to the image (cleany images aren't epic!) and I did some little color change (more saturation). I put a bit of movement blur in some parts of the image, and lightened the upper third of the image to focus the attention on the ship of the close-up. I hope you like it.

Me alegro de que lo hayas acabado, jeje, un español mas al que tendrán que tener en cuenta! Enhorabuena!

very good details and general look in the spaceships, and that explosion looks very dynamic! I think I should've included some kind of post-effects of those from your last post in mine, it gives the image a nice look
Suerte!
